SS433's circumbinary ring and accretion disc viewed through its attenuating disc wind
We present optical spectroscopy of the microquasar SS433 covering a
significant fraction of a precessional cycle of its jet axis. The components of
the prominent stationary H-alpha and H-beta lines are mainly identified as
arising from three emitting regions: (i) a super-Eddington accretion disc wind,
in the form of a broad component accounting for most of the mass loss from the
system, (ii) a circumbinary disc of material that we presume is being excreted
through the binary's L2 point, and (iii) the accretion disc itself as two
remarkably persistent components. The accretion disc components move with a
Keplerian velocity of ~600 km/s in the outer region of the disc. A direct
result of this decomposition is the determination of the accretion disc size,
whose outer radius attains ~8 R_sun in the case of Keplerian orbits around a
black hole mass of 10 M_sun. We determine an upper limit for the accretion disc
inner to outer radius ratio in SS433, R_in/R_out ~ 0.2, independent of the mass
of the compact object. The Balmer decrements, H-alpha/H-beta, are extracted
from the appropriate stationary emission lines for each component of the
system. The physical parameters of the gaseous components are derived. The
circumbinary ring decrement seems to be quite constant throughout precessional
phase, implying a constant electron density of log N_e(cm^-3) ~ 11.5 for the
circumbinary disc. The accretion disc wind shows a larger change in its
decrements exhibiting a clear dependence on precessional phase, implying a
sinusoid variation in its electron density log N_e(cm^-3) along our
line-of-sight between 10 and 13. This dependence of density on direction
suggests that the accretion disc wind is polloidal in nature.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS Main Journal
Early environmental field research career exploration: An analysis of impacts on precollege apprentices
Research apprenticeships offer opportunities for deep understanding of scientific practice, transparency about research careers, and possible transformational effects on precollege youth. We examined two consecutive field-based environmental biology apprenticeship programs designed to deliver realistic career exploration and connections to research scientists. The Shaw Institute for Field Training (SIFT) program combines introductory field-skills training with research assistance opportunities, and the subsequent Tyson Environmental Research Fellowships (TERF) program provides immersive internships on university field station–based research teams. In a longitudinal mixed-methods study grounded in social cognitive career theory, changes in youth perspectives were measured during program progression from 10th grade through college, evaluating the efficacy of encouraging career path entry. Results indicate SIFT provided self-knowledge and career perspectives more aligned with reality. During SIFT, differences were found between SIFT-only participants compared with those who progressed to TERF. Transition from educational activities to fieldwork with scientists was a pivotal moment at which data showed decreased or increased interest and confidence. Continuation to TERF provided deeper relationships with role models who gave essential early-career support. Our study indicates the two-stage apprenticeship structure influenced persistence in pursuit of an environmental research career pathway. Recommendations for other precollege environmental career–exploration programs are presented
DYNAMIC DISSOLVED ORGANIC MATTER RESPONSE TO INCREASES OF ENERGY AVAILABILITY IN FORESTED HEADWATER STREAMS
Forested headwater streams receive inputs of dissolved organic matter (DOM) that can be transformed by biota as they are transported downstream. Biotic uptake of ambient DOM is difficult to assess through direct experimentation, as the fate of a specific organic compound added to a stream is unlikely to mirror that of the ambient DOM pool. Here we examined the dynamics of DOM by using a hybrid approach that combines uptake metrics of a simple organic compound with a direct assessment of the effects of adding this presumably labile organic carbon source (acetate) on the ambient DOM pool. We proposed that adding acetate could result in three different types of responses in the ambient DOM pool: inert, production and priming. Our results provide evidence that each of these scenarios can occur in small streams, but among all our study sites the overall response of ambient dissolved organic (DOC) to added acetate was production of additional DOC, while the dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) pool was unresponsive to addition of acetate (inert response)
Impact of Finishing Diets with De-Oiled Distillers Grains or Antioxidant Containing Supplement on Beef Shelf Life
In its entirety this dissertation intended to address the impact of feeding several forms of de-oiled corn distillers grains plus solubles and the effect of supplementing OmniGen-AF as a potential antioxidant source for extending beef shelf life. In study one we learned that despite the de-oiling process, greater inclusion levels (65%, DM basis) of de-oiled wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) causes an increase in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) similar to the levels obtained with full-fat WDGS. Lower inclusion levels (35 and 50%, DM basis) of de-oiled WDGS have intermediate PUFA content in comparison to 65% de-oiled WDGS, full-fat WDGS and a corn control diet (P \u3c 0.01). In study two cattle finished with 50% de-oiled dry distillers grain plus solubles (DDGS) also resulted in an increased PUFA content in muscle in relation to a corn control group (P \u3c 0.0001). In this instance treatment by retail display interactions indicated that steaks from cattle on the 50% de-oiled DDGS diet had lower color and lipid stability at prolonged retail display times than did the steaks from cattle on the corn control diet (P \u3c 0.0001). In general, the first two studies indicate that even after the de-oiling process and regardless of the moisture content of the distillers grains, feeding corn distillers grains plus solubles increases PUFA content, which in turn negatively impacts beef shelf life. Therefore, it is important to consider this when utilizing these by-products for finishing rations, the addition of antioxidants may be beneficial to off-set any potential detrimental effects of distillesrs grain on beef shelf life. In study three, OmniGen-AF, a potential antioxidant supplement was evaluated. OmniGen-AF supplementation all through the finishing period caused an increase in PUFA content relative to cattle supplemented only through the receiving phase (P = 0.01). Feeding OmniGen-AF all through the finishing phase however did not alter color, lipid stability, or superoxide dismutase activity (P \u3e 0.05). Therefore, in order to consider OmniGen-AF as an effective antioxidant source it may need to be fed at a greater concentration (greater than 4g/45.36kg BW/hd/d) or perhaps more potent antioxidants merit evaluation, particularly in feedlot rations utilizing corn distiller by-products.

Transmitochondrial embryonic stem cells containing pathogenic mtDNA mutations are compromised in neuronal differentiation
Objectives: Defects of the mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) cause a series of rare, mainly neurological disorders. In addition, they have been implicated in more common forms of movement disorders, dementia and the ageing process. In order to try to model neuronal dysfunction associated with mitochondrial disease, we have attempted to establish a series of transmitochondrial mouse embryonic stem cells harbouring pathogenic mtDNA mutations.
Materials and methods: Transmitochondrial embryonic stem cell cybrids were generated by fusion of cytoplasts carrying a variety of mtDNA mutations, into embryonic stem cells that had been pretreated with rhodamine 6G, to prevent transmission of endogenous mtDNA. Cybrids were differentiated into neurons and assessed for efficiency of differentiation and electrophysiological function.
Results: Neuronal differentiation could occur, as indicated by expression of neuronal markers. Differentiation was impaired in embryonic stem cells carrying mtDNA mutations that caused severe biochemical deficiency. Electrophysiological tests showed evidence of synaptic activity in differentiated neurons carrying non-pathogenic mtDNA mutations or in those that caused a mild defect of respiratory activity. Again, however, neurons carrying mtDNA mutations that resulted in severe biochemical deficiency had marked reduction in post-synaptic events.
Conclusions: Differentiated neurons carrying severely pathogenic mtDNA defects can provide a useful model for understanding how such mutations can cause neuronal dysfunction

Evaluating Participatory Modeling: Developing a Framework for Cross-case Analysis
Participatory modeling is increasingly recognised as an effective way to assist collective decision-making processes in the domain of natural resource management. This paper introduces a framework for evaluating projects that have adopted a participatory modeling approach. This framework – known as the ‘Protocol of Canberra’ – was developed through a collaboration between French and Australian researchers engaged in participatory modeling and evaluation research. The framework seeks to assess the extent to which different participatory modeling practices reinforce or divert from the theoretical assumptions they are built upon. The paper discusses the application of the framework in three case-studies, two from Australia and one from the Pacific island of the Republic of Kiribati. The paper concludes with some comments for future use of the framework in a range of participatory modeling contexts, including fostering consideration of why and how different methodological approaches are used to achieve project aims and to build a collective vision amongst diverse stakeholders.participation, modeling, evaluation, complex systems science
