Data collected by sensors need to be processed in order to be shown in an easy and meaningful way for the user. The use of mobile devices may support and offer new user experiences. When connected to a BSN they can aggregate and process data collected by each sensor, providing a mobile solution for a healthcare system. This mobility offers a better patients' quality of life allowing a regular daily routine and always under monitoring. This paper proposes a Symbian-based mobile solution for intra-body temperature monitoring. Mobile device connects wirelessly to an intra-vaginal temperature sensor and interacts with sensor for temperature data collection and monitoring. This system helps women to detect their fertile and ovulation periods by the increasing of their intra-vaginal temperature. The mobile system was tested and validated with success and it is available for regular use

Body sensor networks greatly benefit from wireless sensor networks to answer the biofeedback challenges in healthcare applications. In such applications, data is of fundamental importance, it must be reliable and within easy reach. However, most solutions rely on a personal computer to process and display sensor data. In this paper we propose a mobile solution that draws on three-tier body sensor networks to dramatically improve data accessibility, through the use of a Java and Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone. The mobile tool features data monitoring and presentation. This approach allows data visualization by the patient or medical staff without a portable computer or specific monitoring hardware. We hope to contribute to the adoption of biofeedback for early detection of health abnormalities and lower the budget that governments spend each year in healthcare

    Establishing a Ballistic Test Methodology for Documenting the Containment Capability of Small Gas Turbine Engine Compressors

    A test methodology currently employed for large engines was extended to quantify the ballistic containment capability of a small turboshaft engine compressor case. The approach involved impacting the inside of a compressor case with a compressor blade. A gas gun propelled the blade into the case at energy levels representative of failed compressor blades. The test target was a full compressor case. The aft flange was rigidly attached to a test stand and the forward flange was attached to a main frame to provide accurate boundary conditions. A window machined in the case allowed the projectile to pass through and impact the case wall from the inside with the orientation, direction and speed that would occur in a blade-out event. High-peed, digital-video cameras provided accurate velocity and orientation data. Calibrated cameras and digital image correlation software generated full field displacement and strain information at the back side of the impact point

    High Speed Thermal Imaging on Ballistic Impact of Triaxially Braided Composites

    Ballistic impact experiments were performed on triaxially braided polymer matrix composites to study the heat generated in the material due to projectile velocity and penetration damage. Quantifying the heat generation phenomenon is crucial for attaining a better understanding of composite behavior and failure under impact loading. The knowledge gained can also be used to improve physics-based models which can numerically simulate impact of composites. Triaxially braided (0/+60/-60) composite panels were manufactured with T700S standard modulus carbon fiber and two epoxy resins. The PR520 (toughened) and 3502 (untoughened) resin systems were used to make different panels to study the effects of resin properties on temperature rise. Ballistic impact tests were conducted on these composite panels using a gas gun, and different projectile velocities were applied to study the effect on the temperature results. Temperature contours were obtained from the rear surface of the panel during the test through a high speed, infrared (IR) thermal imaging system. The contours show that high temperatures were locally generated and more pronounced along the axial tows for the T700S/PR520 composite specimens; whereas, tests performed on T700S/3502 composite panels using similar impact velocities demonstrated a widespread area of lower temperature rises. Nondestructive, ultrasonic C-scan analyses were performed to observe and verify the failure patterns in the impacted panels. Overall, the impact experimentation showed temperatures exceeding 525 K (485degF) in both composites which is well above the respective glass transition temperatures for the polymer constituents. This expresses the need for further high strain rate testing and measurement of the temperature and deformation fields to fully understand the complex behavior and failure of the material in order to improve the confidence in designing aerospace components with these materials

    Use of data mining techniques to explain the primary factors influencing water sensitivity of asphalt mixtures

    The water sensitivity of asphalt mixtures affects the durability of the pavements, and it depends on several parameters related to its composition (aggregates and binder) and the production and application processes. One of the main parameters used in the European Standards to measure the water sensitivity of asphalt mixtures is the indirect tensile strength ratio (ITSR). Therefore, this work aims to obtain a predictive model of ITSR of asphalt mixtures using several parameters that affect water sensitivity and assess their relative importance. The database used to develop the model comprises thirteen parameters collected from one hundred sixty different asphalt mixtures. Data Mining techniques were applied to process the data using Multiple Regression, Artificial Neural Networks, and Support Vector Machines (SVM). The different metrics analysed showed that SVM is the best predictive model of the ITSR (mean absolute deviation of 0.116, root mean square error of 0.150 and Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.667). The application of a sensitivity analysis indicates that the binder content is the parameter that most influences the water sensitivity of asphalt mixtures (26%).     Influence of ageing on the properties of bitumen from asphalt mixtures with recycled concrete aggregates

    The reuse of recycled concrete aggregates in new hot-mix asphalt can be a more sustainable method of production, but these mixtures may need a heat treatment before compaction to improve their water sensitivity performance. A direct consequence of this treatment is an increase in the hot-mix asphalt resilient modulus. The aim of this paper is to analyse the effect of ageing on the stiffness of asphalt mixtures with different amounts of recycled concrete aggregates, before and after a heat treatment, which was analysed through the assessment of its bitumen properties. Moreover, this paper also aims to analyse whether the rolling thin-film oven test is able to simulate the ageing effect of the heat treatment. In the laboratory work, a paving grade bitumen B50/70 has been used to produce asphalt mixtures with 0% and 30% recycled concrete aggregates, and the bitumen was later characterised (using penetration, softening point, dynamic viscosity and dynamic shear rheometer tests) in various situations, such as when using virgin bitumen, short-term aged bitumen, aged bitumen after heat treatment (simulated with 4 h of rolling thin-film oven test) and bitumen samples recovered from asphalt mixtures with different production mixes (0% and 30% recycled concrete aggregate) and heat treatment conditions (0 and 4 h of curing time in the oven). Based on the results obtained, it could be concluded that the ageing resulting from the heat treatment is the primary cause of the hot-mix asphalt's increased stiffness, while recycled concrete aggregate content has a small influence. Moreover, it could be concluded that when there is no curing time, the recycled concrete aggregate protects the bitumen against ageing. Additionally, it could be stated that the rolling thin-film test is able to adequately simulate the ageing effect of the heat treatment.     Genetic polymorphisms and coronary artery disease in the portuguese population: the GENEMACOR Study

    PosterMultiple studies have showed an association between genetic polymorphisms and the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). Initially, studies focused mainly in variants acting in pathophysiological axis of CAD or its risk factors. Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) revealed other genes that, besides having an unknown mechanism, are statistically significant. The importance of these in the development of CAD in the Portuguese population is unknown. Objective: Analyze the genetic polymorphisms associated with the development of CAD in a Portuguese population. Methods: We performed a case-control study with 1321 consecutive coronary patients (mean age 53.4 ± 8.1 years, 78.8% male) and 1148 controls (adjusted for age and sex) selected from GENEMACOR Study, an ongoing study designed to analyze the genetic profile of a Portuguese population. We evaluated, in both groups, 29 genetic variants previously associated with CAD: ACE I/D, AGT235 M/T, ATIR A/C, MTHFR C/T and 1298 A/C, PON192 Q/R and 55 L/M,LPA T/C, APO E, Locus 9p21.3 (rs1333049), CDKN2B (rs4977574), GJA4 C/T, PCSK9 A/G, TAS2R50 A/G, KIF6 C/T, IGF2BP2 G/T, ADAMTS7 A/G, MC4R T/C, PPARG Pro12 Ala, ZNF259 C/G, SMAD3 C/T, MIA3 C/A, MTHFD1L A/G, SLC30A8 C/T, TCF7L2 C/T, HNF4 C/G, FTO A/C and ADIPOQ C/G. Allele and genotypic frequencies of individuals with and without CAD were compared and the strength of association was expressed by the OR as well as by CI 95%. Results: The variants rs4340 (ACE I/D), rs266729 (ADIPOQ C/G), rs458560 (PON55 L/M), rs429358 (APOE2), LPA T/C, rs1333049 (locus 9p21.3) and rs4977574 (CDKN2B A/G) were significantly associated with CAD (p<0.05) (Table). Conclusions: In our population, the genetic polymorphisms significantly related to CAD were: ACE, associated with hypertension; ADIPOQ, associated with obesity; PON55, associated with oxidation; APOE and LPA, associated with dyslipidemia and finally the locus 9p21.3 with a unclear mechanism so far.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Genome-Wide Analysis in Brazilian Xavante Indians Reveals Low Degree of Admixture

    Characterization of population genetic variation and structure can be used as tools for research in human genetics and population isolates are of great interest. the aim of the present study was to characterize the genetic structure of Xavante Indians and compare it with other populations. the Xavante, an indigenous population living in Brazilian Central Plateau, is one of the largest native groups in Brazil. A subset of 53 unrelated subjects was selected from the initial sample of 300 Xavante Indians. Using 86,197 markers, Xavante were compared with all populations of HapMap Phase III and HGDP-CEPH projects and with a Southeast Brazilian population sample to establish its population structure. Principal Components Analysis showed that the Xavante Indians are concentrated in the Amerindian axis near other populations of known Amerindian ancestry such as Karitiana, Pima, Surui and Maya and a low degree of genetic admixture was observed. This is consistent with the historical records of bottlenecks experience and cultural isolation. By calculating pair-wise F-st statistics we characterized the genetic differentiation between Xavante Indians and representative populations of the HapMap and from HGDP-CEPH project. We found that the genetic differentiation between Xavante Indians and populations of Ameridian, Asian, European, and African ancestry increased progressively.     Network Archaeology: Uncovering Ancient Networks from Present-day Interactions

    Often questions arise about old or extinct networks. What proteins interacted in a long-extinct ancestor species of yeast? Who were the central players in the Last.fm social network 3 years ago? Our ability to answer such questions has been limited by the unavailability of past versions of networks. To overcome these limitations, we propose several algorithms for reconstructing a network's history of growth given only the network as it exists today and a generative model by which the network is believed to have evolved. Our likelihood-based method finds a probable previous state of the network by reversing the forward growth model. This approach retains node identities so that the history of individual nodes can be tracked. We apply these algorithms to uncover older, non-extant biological and social networks believed to have grown via several models, including duplication-mutation with complementarity, forest fire, and preferential attachment. Through experiments on both synthetic and real-world data, we find that our algorithms can estimate node arrival times, identify anchor nodes from which new nodes copy links, and can reveal significant features of networks that have long since disappeared.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figure
