Solving math problems by regular and high-ability students
The cognitive and academic performance of high ability
students is not always understood in terms of the cognitive
processes involved in their learning. In the absence of this
analysis, psychologists and teachers are limited in the real
evaluation of the competences of these students and in the
implementation of teaching practices that meet their
specificities and needs. Starting from this reality, we try to
find out how a group of students from Portugal and Spain,
between the ages of 9 and 12, solve math problems. The
sample was composed for comparison purposes by
students with high intellectual potential and by regular
students. The data obtained show a superior performance
on the part of the students with high capacity, even
controlling the effect of other variables.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Basketball training influences shot selection assessment : a multi-attribute decision-making approach1
In spite of the fact that shoot selection is a crucial ingredient of performance in basketball, the judgment and decision making processes involved in it have been largely neglected. In the present work, we explore individuals' strategies to assess the adequateness of shooting (in a simulation laboratory task) in situations varying in the degree of physical defensive pressure, rebound, defensive balance and shooting distance. Our results showed that the four target dimensions have an impact on participants' judgments. More importantly, training influences the degree to which one of the non-obvious dimensions (defensive balance) is taken into account by participants in order to make their judgments. These results stress the necessity to develop measures of shot selection decisional quality beyond scoring rates

Black, Brown, and Powerful: Freedom Dreams in Unequal Cities
In April 2018, the Institute on Inequality and Democracy convened scholars, activists, policy advocates, community residents, and nonprofit workers to share and discuss research and action pertaining to processes of inequality in Los Angeles. We sought to shed light on the entangled structures of oppression, including urban displacement, housing precarity, racialized policing, criminal justice debt, forced labor, and the mass supervision and control of youth. Through keynote talks, group dialogue, and workshops, we analyzed how in Los Angeles, and elsewhere, black and brown communities face multiple forms of banishment and exploitation ranging from the criminalization of poverty to institutionalized theft. The question of racial banishment has been an important one for the Institute since its inauguration two years ago. This year though, amidst the troubled times of Trumpism, we wanted to shift our focus from banishment to freedom. In the reports that follow, you will find many examples of what Robin D.G. Kelley, a key presence at the Institute, has famously called “freedom dreams.” Located in, and thinking from South Central Los Angeles, the event’s participants provide insight into organizing frameworks and resistance strategies that challenge exclusion and refuse subordination. From tenant organizing to debtors’ unions, from underground scholars to educational reparations, visions of freedom abound. The Institute on Inequality and Democracy is convinced that university-based research can, and must, support such freedom dreams. Such partnership – between the public university and social justice movements – requires careful attention to the difficult task of decolonizing the university. This mandate is evident throughout this collection of reports. There is no easy alliance between academic power and banished communities; there is no obvious solidarity between urban plans and freedom dreams. This event was intended to be a step towards building such alliances, especially by reconstructing the curriculum and canon of knowledge
Discriminative decision rule learning is a core ingredient in many interactive sports. This study presents a laboratory simulation experiment (an adaptation of a Go/No-go task) that focuses on the quantitative analysis of three important environmental determinants of shot selection in basketball: physical opposition, availability of rebound and availability of defensive balance. Our results show that these three criteria are incorporated into decisions at different rates. Moreover, the use of such criteria is differentially sensitive to intentional (vs. incidental) instruction. In practical terms, these results illustrate some of the potential limitations of decision-making training by mere task design, i.e., without the coach's explicit guidance
The "greening" of environmental sciences studies in Spain
We show the results of a process of identifying the presence of Environmental Education (EE)
in Environmental Sciences degrees (ES) in Spain. So we have searched into the websites of universities, pointing the presence of EE, the optional/compulsory character, the departments responsible for it, and
indicators of EE and teaching methodology in their teaching guides. On the other hand a survey was applied to a sample of students of university degree of ES including their interest in the EE, the nature of this, and how much they agree with the above indicators. The results show a partial implementation of the EE and a hopeful attitude of students towards such presence
Analysis of health claims regarding creatine monohydrate present in commercial communications for a sample of European sports foods supplements
Objective: To analyse the information on health claims present in the labelling of creatine monohydrate (CM) products. Design: A descriptive study of a selection of products marketed as CM, with health claims, and that met the inclusion/exclusion criteria, was conducted using the Amazon and Google Shopping websites. The adequacy and compliance of the health claims were evaluated with the European legislative requirements (European Food Safety Authority and European Commission). The results were discussed with scientific evidence criteria from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, International Olympic Committee, and International Society of Sports Nutrition, as well as the systematic review carried out by Mielgo-Ayuso in 2019. Setting: Health claims in the commercial communications of a sample of CM supplements, in relation to current legislation and scientific knowledge. Participant: A total of 554 CM products were obtained. Results: Of the total sample, only 167 met the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Of these, 30·5 % recommended a CM dose of 5·0–5·9 g/d, while 29·9 % recommended 3·0 to 3·9 g/d. As for the health claims, ‘Enhances physical performance’ appeared in 73·1 % of the supplements, in most cases referring to a dosage of 3·0 to 3·9 g/d for these products. The rest of the declarations were not adequate or needed to be modified. Conclusion: Only 25 % of the health claims complied with the criteria established by the scientific reference documents. Most of the declarations must be modified or eliminated, as they could be considered fraudulent and/or misleading for the consumer
