A Bayesian High-Frequency Estimator of the Multivariate Covariance of Noisy and Asynchronous Returns
A multivariate positive definite estimator of the integrated covariance matrix of noisy and asynchronously observed asset returns is proposed. We adopt a Bayesian Dynamic Linear Model where microstructure noise is interpreted as measurement error, and asynchronous trading as missing observations in an otherwise synchronous series. Missing observations are treated as any other parameter, as typical in a Bayesian framework. An augmented Gibbs algorithm is used since all full conditionals are available and its convergence and robustness are discussed. A realistic simulation study compares our estimator with existing alternatives, under different liquidity and microstructure noise conditions. The results suggest that our estimator is superior in terms of RMSE particularly under severe conditions, such as portfolios of assets with heterogeneous liquidity and high level of microstructure noise. The application to the empirical dataset of ten tick-by-tick stock price series confirms the simulation results
Identification and characterization of MicroRNAs expressed in the mouse eye
PURPOSE. MicroRNAs ( miRNAs) are a class of small, endogenous RNAs that negatively regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally by binding to target sites in the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of messenger RNAs. Although they have been found to regulate developmental and physiological processes in several organs and tissues, their role in the eye transcriptome is completely unknown. This study was conducted to gain understanding of their eye-related function in mammals, by looking for miRNAs significantly expressed in the mouse eye by means of high-resolution expression analysis. METHODS. The spatiotemporal localization of miRNAs was analyzed in the murine embryonic and postnatal eye by RNA in situ hybridization ( ISH) using LNA-modified oligonucleotide probes. RESULTS. Seven miRNAs were expressed in the eye with diverse and partially overlapping patterns, which may reflect their role in controlling cell differentiation of the retina as well as of other ocular structures. Most eye-expressed miRNAs overlap with or are in the near vicinity of transcripts derived predominantly from eye cDNA libraries. We found that these transcripts share very similar cellular distribution with their corresponding miRNAs, suggesting that miRNAs may share common expression regulatory elements with their host genes. CONCLUSIONS. The data provide a detailed characterization of expression of eye-enriched miRNAs. Knowledge of the spatiotemporal distribution of miRNAs is an essential step toward the identification of their targets and eventually the elucidation of their biological role in eye development and function
A new regression model for the forecasting of COVID-19 outbreak evolution: an application to Italian data
none5noThe novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 was first identified in China in December 2019. In just over five months, the virus affected over 4 million people and caused about 300,000 deaths. This study aimed to model new COVID-19 cases in Italian regions using a new curve. A new empirical curve is proposed to model the number of new cases of COVID-19. It resembles a known exponential growth curve, which has a straight line as an exponent, but in the growth curve proposed, the exponent is a logistic curve multiplied for a straight line. This curve shows an initial phase, the expected exponential growth, then rises to the maximum value and finally reaches zero. We characterized the epidemic growth patterns for the entire Italian nation and each of the 20 Italian regions. The estimated growth curve has been used to calculate the expected time of the beginning, the time related to peak, and the end of the epidemics. Our analysis explores the development of the outbreaks in Italy and the impact of the containment measures. Data obtained are useful to forecast future scenarios and the possible end of the epidemic.openD. Sisti, S. Amatori, E. Rocchi, S. Peluso, M. Analisi di variabili climatiche in funzione della comprensione della variabilit? planctonica (caso di studio: Golfo di Trieste)
No abstract available in english.
Complex phenotype in an Italian family with a novel mutation in SPG3A.
Mutations in the SPG3A gene represent a significant cause of autosomal dominant hereditary spastic paraplegia with early onset and pure phenotype. We describe an Italian family manifesting a complex phenotype, characterized by cerebellar
involvement in the proband and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis-like syndrome in her father, in association with a new mutation in SPG3A. Our findings further widen the notion of clinical heterogeneity in SPG3A mutations
REDD+ on the rocks? Conflict over forest and politics of justice in Vietnam
In Vietnam, villagers involved in a REDD+ (reduced emissions from deforestation and forest degradation) pilot protect areas with rocks which have barely a tree on them. The apparent paradox indicates how actual practices differ from general ideas about REDD+ due to ongoing conflict over forest, and how contestations over the meaning of justice are a core element in negotiations over REDD+. We explore these politics of justice by examining how the actors involved in the REDD+ pilot negotiate the particular subjects, dimensions, and authority of justice considered relevant, and show how politics of justice are implicit to practical decisions in project implementation. Contestations over the meaning of justice are an important element in the practices and processes constituting REDD+ at global, national and local levels, challenging uniform definitions of forest justice and how forests ought to be managed
PGRMC1 localization and putative function in the nucleolus of bovine granulosa cells and oocytes
Progesterone Receptor Membrane Component-1 (PGRMC1) is a highly conserved multifunctional protein that is found in numerous systems, including reproductive system. Interestingly, PGRMC1 is expressed at several intracellular locations, including the nucleolus. The aim of this study is to investigate the functional relationship between PGRMC1 and nucleolus. Immunofluorescence experiments confirmed PGRMC1's nucleolar localization in cultured bovine granulosa cells (bGC) and oocytes. Additional experiments conducted on bGC revealed that PGRMC1 co-localizes with nucleolin (NCL), a major nucleolar protein. Furthermore, small interfering RNA (RNAi) mediated gene-silencing experiments showed that when PGRMC1 expression was depleted, NCL translocated from the nucleolus to the nucleoplasm. Similarly, oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) treatment, reduced PGRMC1 immunofluorescent signal in the nucleolus and increased NCL nucleoplasmic signal, when compared to non-treated cells. Although PGRMC1 influenced NCL localization, a direct interaction between these two proteins was not detected using in situ proximity ligation assay. This suggests the involvement of additional molecules in mediating the co-localization of PGRMC1 and nucleolin. Since nucleolin translocates into the nucleoplasm in response to various cellular stressors, PGRMC1's ability to regulate its localization within the nucleolus is likely an important component of mechanism by which cells response to stress. This concept is consistent with PGRMC1's well-described ability to promote ovarian cell survival and provides a rationale for future studies on PGRMC1, NCL and the molecular mechanism by which these two proteins protect against the adverse effect of cellular stressors, including oxidative stress
Effect of dietary thymol supplementation on lipid oxidation of chicken legs as related to storage conditions
The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of dietary thymol supplementation on lipid oxidation of chicken leg meat during refrigerated shelf-life. Chickens belonging to Ross 308 hybrid were raised under experimental conditions up to 3 kg of live weight, using three dietary treatments: control (without supplementation, C), treatment 1 (C+0.1% w/w thymol supplementation, T1) and treatment 2 (C+0.2% w/w thymol supplementation, T2). After slaughtering, the chicken legs with skin were stored under conventional (CON) and modified atmosphere (MAP) at temperature of 2-4°C for 14 days. Lipid oxidation was monitored by the determination of primary (peroxide value, PV) and secondary (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, TBARs) products at 3, 7, 10 and 14 days of storage under both CON and MAP conditions and compared with values found on fresh meat. The three different dietary treatments did not significantly affect the lipid oxidation parameters. PV ranged between 0.5-13.0, 0.7-13.0 and 1.0-11.0 meq O2/kg of lipid in poultry meat obtained with C, T1 and T2 diets, respectively. TBARs varied between 0.1-0.7, 0.1- 0.6 and 0.2-0.5 mg MDA/kg of meat in poultry meat obtained with C, T1 and T2 diets, respectively. On the other hand, interaction effect of diets and storage conditions were significant (P≤0.05) in PV formation, as it was delayed under MAP (maximum PV level after 2 and 5 days of storage in C and thymol-containing diets, respectively) with respect to conventional storage (PV apex after 2 days of storage). However, not significant differences (P≥0.05) were found on TBARs level as related to storage conditions. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that dietary thymol supplementation coupled to MAP storage conditions delay lipid oxidation of chicken legs with skin, thus improving their shelf-life
Expression of progesterone receptor membrane component-1 in bovine reproductive system during estrous cycle
Several reports suggest the participation of progesterone receptor membrane component 1 (PGRMC1) in progesterone signaling in the reproductive system. This study aimed at investigating the presence and localization of PGRMC1 in bovine ovary, oviduct and uterus, during the follicular and luteal phases of the estrous cycle. In the ovary, PGRMC1 has been detected in surface germinal epithelium, granulosa cells, theca cells and in the germinal vesicle of the oocytes at all stages of folliculogenesis. In the corpus luteum the expression of PGRMC1 was influenced by the stage of the estrous cycle. In the oviducts and in the uterus horns, PGRMC1 was immunolocalized in the luminal epithelium, in the muscle layer cells and in the endothelial cells. In the uterus, PGRMC1 was intensely localized also in the glandular endometrium. However, in the oviducts and in the uterus horns, the localization of PGRMC1 was independent on the stage of the estrous cycle and on whether evaluating the ipsilateral or the contralateral organ. In conclusion, the present immunohistochemical study showed that PGRMC1 is located in various compartments of the bovine female reproductive organs. With the exception of the corpora lutea, PGRMC1 localization showed similar pattern during different stages of the estrous cycle
Enabling monocular depth perception at the very edge
Depth estimation is crucial in several computer vision applications, and a recent trend aims at inferring such a cue from a single camera through computationally demanding CNNs - precluding their practical deployment in several application contexts characterized by low-power constraints. Purposely, we develop a tiny network tailored to microcontrollers, processing low-resolution images to obtain a coarse depth map of the observed scene. Our solution enables depth perception with minimal power requirements (a few hundreds of mW), accurately enough to pave the way to several high-level applications at-the-edge
