    Following Paths of Maximum Catalytic Activity in the Composition Space of High‐Entropy Alloys

    The search for better and cheaper electrocatalysts is vital in the global transition to renewable energy resources. High-entropy alloys (HEAs) provide a near-infinite number of different alloys with approximately continuous properties such as catalytic activity. In this work, the catalytic activity for the electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction as a function of molar composition of Ag-Ir-Pd-Pt-Ru HEA is treated as a landscape wherein it is shown that the maxima are connected through ridges. By following the ridges, it is possible to navigate between the maxima using a modified nudged elastic band (NEB) model integrated in a machine learning NEB algorithm. These results provide a new understanding of the composition space being similar to an evolutionary landscape. This provides a possible new search and design strategy for new catalysts in which the composition of known catalysts can be optimized by following ridges rather than exploring the whole alloy composition space

    Bayesian Optimization of High‐Entropy Alloy Compositions for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction**

    Active, selective and stable catalysts are imperative for sustainable energy conversion, and engineering materials with such properties are highly desired. High-entropy alloys (HEAs) offer a vast compositional space for tuning such properties. Too vast, however, to traverse without the proper tools. Here, we report the use of Bayesian optimization on a model based on density functional theory (DFT) to predict the most active compositions for the electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with the least possible number of sampled compositions for the two HEAs Ag-Ir-Pd-Pt-Ru and Ir-Pd-Pt-Rh-Ru. The discovered optima are then scrutinized with DFT and subjected to experimental validation where optimal catalytic activities are verified for Ag-Pd, Ir-Pt, and Pd-Ru binary systems. This study offers insight into the number of experiments needed for exploring the vast compositional space of multimetallic alloys which has been determined to be on the order of 50 for ORR on these HEAs

    Psychiatric disorders and urbanization in Germany

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Epidemiological studies over the last decade have supplied growing evidence of an association between urbanization and the prevalence of psychiatric disorders. Our aim was to examine the link between levels of urbanization and 12-month prevalence rates of psychiatric disorders in a nationwide German population study, controlling for other known risk factors such as gender, social class, marital status and the interaction variables of these factors with urbanization.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The Munich Composite International Diagnostic Interview (M-CIDI) was used to assess the prevalence of mental disorders (DSM-IV) in a representative sample of the German population (N = 4181, age: 18–65). The sample contains five levels of urbanization based on residence location.</p> <p>The epidemiological study was commissioned by the German Ministry of Research, Education and Science (BMBF) and approved by the relevant Institutional Review Board and ethics committee. Written informed consent was obtained for both surveys (core survey and Mental Health Supplement). Subjects did not get any financial compensation for their study participation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Higher levels of urbanization were linked to higher 12-month prevalence rates for almost all major psychiatric disorders (with the exception of substance abuse and psychotic disorders). The weighted prevalence percentages were highest in the most urbanized category. Alongside urbanization, female gender, lower social class and being unmarried were generally found to be associated with higher levels of psychopathology. The impact of urbanization on mental health was about equal (for almost all major psychiatric disorders) in young people and elderly people, men and women, and in married and single people. Only people from a low social class in the most urbanized settings had more somatoform disorders, and unmarried people in the most urbanized settings had more anxiety disorders.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Psychiatric disorders are more prevalent among the inhabitants of more urbanized areas. probably because of environmental stressors.</p

    Exploring the evidence base for national and regional policy interventions to combat resistance

    The effectiveness of existing policies to control antimicrobial resistance is not yet fully understood. A strengthened evidence base is needed to inform effective policy interventions across countries with different income levels and the human health and animal sectors. We examine three policy domains—responsible use, surveillance, and infection prevention and control—and consider which will be the most effective at national and regional levels. Many complexities exist in the implementation of such policies across sectors and in varying political and regulatory environments. Therefore, we make recommendations for policy action, calling for comprehensive policy assessments, using standardised frameworks, of cost-effectiveness and generalisability. Such assessments are especially important in low-income and middle-income countries, and in the animal and environmental sectors. We also advocate a One Health approach that will enable the development of sensitive policies, accommodating the needs of each sector involved, and addressing concerns of specific countries and regions

    Is the prevalence of psychiatric disorders associated with urbanization?

    Objectives In many countries, the total rate of psychiatric disorders tends to be higher in urban areas than in rural areas. The relevance of this phenomenon is that it may help in identifying environmental factors that are important in the pathogenesis of mental disorders. Moreover, urban preponderance suggests that the allocation of funds and services should take urbanization levels into account. Method The Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study (NEMESIS) used the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) to determine the prevalence of DSM-III-R disorders in a sample of 7,076 people aged 18–64. The sample was representative of the population as a whole. The study population was assigned to five urbanization categories defined at the level of municipalities. The association between urbanization and 12-month prevalence rates of psychiatric disorders was studied using logistic regression taking several confounders into account. Results The prevalence of psychiatric disorders gradually increased over five levels of urbanization. This pattern remained after adjustment for a range of confounders. Comorbidity rates also increased with level of urbanization. Conclusion This study confirms that psychiatric disorders are more common and more complex in more urbanized areas. This should be reflected in service allocation and may help in identifying environmental factors of importance for the aetiology of mental disorders. j Key words population survey – psychiatric epidemiology – mental disorders – urbanizatio

    The effect of antecedent hypoglycaemia on ÎČ2-adrenergic sensitivity in healthy participants with the Arg16Gly polymorphism of the ÎČ2-adrenergic receptor

    Contains fulltext : 96423.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access)AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Homozygosity for glycine at codon 16 (GlyGly) of the beta(2)-adrenergic receptor may alter receptor sensitivity upon chronic stimulation and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of hypoglycaemia unawareness. We compared the effect of antecedent hypoglycaemia on beta(2)-adrenergic receptor sensitivity between GlyGly participants and those with arginine 16 homozygosity (ArgArg) for the beta(2)-adrenergic receptor. METHODS: We enrolled 16 healthy participants, who were either GlyGly (n = 8) or ArgArg (n = 8). They participated randomly in two 2 day experiments. Day 1 consisted of two 2-h hyperinsulinaemic hypoglycaemic (2.8 mmol/l) or euglycaemic (4.8 mmol/l) glucose clamps. On day 2, we measured the forearm vasodilator response to the beta(2)-adrenergic receptor agonist salbutamol and the dose of isoprenaline required to increase the heart rate by 25 bpm (IC(25)). RESULTS: The vasodilator response to salbutamol tended to be greater after antecedent hypoglycaemia than after euglycaemia (p = 0.078), consistent with increased beta(2)-adrenergic receptor sensitivity. This effect was driven by a significant increase in beta(2)-adrenergic receptor sensitivity following hypoglycaemia compared with euglycaemia in ArgArg participants (p = 0.019), whereas no such effect was observed in the GlyGly participants. Antecedent hypoglycaemia tended to decrease the IC(25) in ArgArg participants, whereas the reverse occurred in the GlyGly participants (GlyGly vs ArgArg group p = 0.047). CONCLUSION/INTERPRETATION: Antecedent hypoglycaemia did not affect beta(2)-adrenergic receptor sensitivity in healthy GlyGly participants, but increased it in ArgArg participants. If these results also hold for participants with type 1 diabetes, such an increase in beta(2)-adrenergic receptor sensitivity may potentially reduce the risk of repeated hypoglycaemia and the subsequent development of hypoglycaemia unawareness in ArgArg diabetic participants.     The influence of different anticoagulants and sample preparation methods on measurement of mCD14 on bovine monocytes and polymorphonuclear neutrophil leukocytes

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Membrane-CD14 (mCD14) is expressed on the surface of monocytes, macrophages and polymorphonuclear neutrophil leukocytes (PMN). mCD14 acts as a co-receptor along with Toll like receptor 4 (TLR 4) and MD-2 for the detection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). However, studies using different sample preparation methods and anticoagulants have reported different levels of mCD14 on the surface of monocytes and neutrophils. In this study, the influence of various anticoagulants and processing methods on measurement of mCD14 on monocytes and neutrophils was examined.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Whole blood samples were collected in vacutainer tubes containing either sodium heparin (HEPARIN), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) or sodium citrate (CITRATE). mCD14 on neutrophils and monocytes in whole blood samples or isolated cells was measured by the method of flow cytometry using fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled monoclonal antibody. There was a significant difference (<it>p </it>< 0.05) in the mean channel fluorescence intensity (MFI) of mCD14 on neutrophils in whole blood samples anticoagulated with HEPARIN (MFI = 64.77) in comparison with those in whole blood samples anticoagulated with either EDTA (MFI = 38.25) or CITRATE (MFI = 43.7). The MFI of mCD14 on monocytes in whole blood samples anticoagulted with HEPARIN (MFI = 206.90) was significantly higher than the MFI in whole blood samples anticoagulated with EDTA (MFI = 149.37) but similar to that with CITRATE (MFI = 162.55). There was no significant difference in the percentage of whole blood neutrophils or monocytes expressing mCD14 irrespective of type of anticoagulant used. However, MFI of mCD14 on monocytes was about 3.2-folds (HEPARIN), 3.9-folds (EDTA) or 3.7 folds (CITRATE) higher than those on neutrophils. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in mCD14 levels between unprocessed whole blood monocytes and monocytes in peripheral blood mononuclear cell preparation. Conversely, a highly significant difference was observed in mCD14 between unprocessed whole blood neutrophils and isolated neutrophils (<it>p </it>< 0.05).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>From these results, it is suggested that sodium heparin should be the preferred anticoagulant for use in the reliable quantification of the surface expression of mCD14. Furthermore, measurement of mCD14 is best carried out in whole blood samples, both for neutrophils and monocytes.</p

    Twin's Birth-Order Differences in Height and Body Mass Index From Birth to Old Age : A Pooled Study of 26 Twin Cohorts Participating in the CODATwins Project

    We analyzed birth order differences in means and variances of height and body mass index (BMI) in monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twins from infancy to old age. The data were derived from the international CODATwins database. The total number of height and BMI measures from 0.5 to 79.5 years of age was 397,466. As expected, first-born twins had greater birth weight than second-born twins. With respect to height, first-born twins were slightly taller than second-born twins in childhood. After adjusting the results for birth weight, the birth order differences decreased and were no longer statistically significant. First-born twins had greater BMI than the second-born twins over childhood and adolescence. After adjusting the results for birth weight, birth order was still associated with BMI until 12 years of age. No interaction effect between birth order and zygosity was found. Only limited evidence was found that birth order influenced variances of height or BMI. The results were similar among boys and girls and also in MZ and DZ twins. Overall, the differences in height and BMI between first-and second-born twins were modest even in early childhood, while adjustment for birth weight reduced the birth order differences but did not remove them for BMI.Peer reviewe
