Determination of bound state energies for a one-dimensional potential field
A method for determination of bound state energies for an asymmetric quantum
well with an arbitrary shape of the bottom is suggested. It is shown that how
the equation determining the energy levels can be easily derived if one knows
the electron transmission and reflection amplitudes corresponding to the part
of potential inside the well. The results are applied to three difference test
problems.Comment: a file with three figure
Phylogenetic diversity of insecticolous fusaria inferred from multilocus DNA sequence data and their molecular identification via FUSARIUM-ID and Fusarium MLST
We constructed several multilocus DNA sequence datasets to assess the phylogenetic diversity of insecticolous fusaria, especially focusing on those housed at the Agricultural Research Service Collection of Entomopathogenic Fungi (ARSEF), and to aid molecular identifications of unknowns via the FUSARIUM-ID and Fusarium MLST online databases and analysis packages. Analyses of a 190-taxon, two-locus dataset, which included 159 isolates from insects, indicated that: (i) insect-associated fusaria were nested within 10 species complexes spanning the phylogenetic breadth of Fusarium, (ii) novel, putatively unnamed insecticolous species were nested within 8/10 species complexes and (iii) Latin binomials could be applied with confidence to only 18/58 phylogenetically distinct fusaria associated with pest insects. Phylogenetic analyses of an 82-taxon, three-locus dataset nearly fully resolved evolutionary relationships among the 10 clades containing insecticolous fusaria. Multilocus typing of isolates within four species complexes identified surprisingly high genetic diversity in that 63/65 of the fusaria typed represented newly discovered haplotypes. The DNA sequence data, together with corrected ABI sequence chromatograms and alignments, have been uploaded to the following websites dedicated to identifying fusaria: FUSARIUM-ID (http://isolate.fusariumdb.org) a
Missing energy in black hole production and decay at the Large Hadron Collider
Black holes could be produced at the Large Hadron Collider in TeV-scale
gravity scenarios. We discuss missing energy mechanisms in black hole
production and decay in large extra-dimensional models. In particular, we
examine how graviton emission into the bulk could give the black hole enough
recoil to leave the brane. Such a perturbation would cause an abrupt
termination in Hawking emission and result in large missing-energy signatures.Comment: addressed reviewer comments and updated reference
Tunneling broadening of vibrational sidebands in molecular transistors
Transport through molecular quantum dots coupled to a single vibration mode
is studied in the case with strong coupling to the leads. We use an expansion
in the correlation between electrons on the molecule and electrons in the leads
and show that the tunneling broadening is strongly suppressed by the
combination of the Pauli principle and the quantization of the oscillator. As a
consequence the first Frank-Condon step is sharper than the higher order ones,
and its width, when compared to the bare tunneling strength, is reduced by the
overlap between the groundstates of the displaced and the non-displaced
oscillator.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures. PRB, in pres
Generalized Species Sampling Priors with Latent Beta reinforcements
Many popular Bayesian nonparametric priors can be characterized in terms of
exchangeable species sampling sequences. However, in some applications,
exchangeability may not be appropriate. We introduce a {novel and
probabilistically coherent family of non-exchangeable species sampling
sequences characterized by a tractable predictive probability function with
weights driven by a sequence of independent Beta random variables. We compare
their theoretical clustering properties with those of the Dirichlet Process and
the two parameters Poisson-Dirichlet process. The proposed construction
provides a complete characterization of the joint process, differently from
existing work. We then propose the use of such process as prior distribution in
a hierarchical Bayes modeling framework, and we describe a Markov Chain Monte
Carlo sampler for posterior inference. We evaluate the performance of the prior
and the robustness of the resulting inference in a simulation study, providing
a comparison with popular Dirichlet Processes mixtures and Hidden Markov
Models. Finally, we develop an application to the detection of chromosomal
aberrations in breast cancer by leveraging array CGH data.Comment: For correspondence purposes, Edoardo M. Airoldi's email is

Constructing 3D crystal templates for photonic band gap materials using holographic optical tweezers
A simple and robust method is presented for the construction of 3-dimensional crystals from silica and polystyrene microspheres. The crystals are suitable for use as templates in the production of three-dimensional photonic band gap (PBG) materials. Manipulation of the microspheres was achieved using a dynamic holographic assembler (DHA) consisting of computer controlled holographic optical tweezers. Attachment of the microspheres was achieved by adjusting their colloidal interactions during assembly. The method is demonstrated by constructing a variety of 3-dimensional crystals using spheres ranging in size from 3 µm down to 800 nm. A major advantage of the technique is that it may be used to build structures that cannot be made using self-assembly. This is illustrated through the construction of crystals in which line defects have been deliberately included, and by building simple cubic structures
Out-of-equilibrium singlet-triplet Kondo effect in a single C_60 quantum dot
We have used an electromigration technique to fabricate a
single-molecule transistor (SMT). Besides describing our electromigration
procedure, we focus and present an experimental study of a single molecule
quantum dot containing an even number of electrons, revealing, for two
different samples, a clear out-of-equilibrium Kondo effect. Low temperature
magneto-transport studies are provided, which demonstrates a Zeeman splitting
of the finite bias anomaly.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Anomalous enhancement of tetragonality in PbTiO3 induced by negative pressure
Using a first-principles approach based on density-functional theory, we find
that a large tetragonal strain can be induced in PbTiO3 by application of a
negative hydrostatic pressure. The structural parameters and the dielectric and
dynamical properties are found to change abruptly near a crossover pressure,
displaying a ``kinky'' behavior suggestive of proximity to a phase transition.
Analogous calculations for BaTiO3 show that the same effect is also present
there, but at much higher negative pressure. We investigate this unexpected
behavior of PbTiO3 and discuss an interpretation involving a phenomenological
description in terms of a reduced set of relevant degrees of freedom.Comment: 9 pages, with 9 postscript figures embedded. Uses REVTEX and epsf
