    Prevalencia de candidiasis vaginal en una población obstétrica de bajo riesgo en Santander

    ObjetivoConocer la prevalencia de candidiasis vaginal en embarazadas controladas desde atención primaria y ver si está aumentando con el paso del tiempo.DiseñoEstudio descriptivo, retrospectivo del universo de mujeres embarazadas.EmplazamientoZona Básica de Salud Cazoña (34.783 habitantes).SujetosToda la población obstétrica controlada en nuestro centro de salud desde 1992 a 1997, ambos inclusive.Mediciones y resultadosEstudio retrospectivo de las historias clínicas de todas las mujeres embarazadas captadas en nuestro centro de salud (878 embarazos). Descartados los derivados a tocólogo, abortos y partos prematuros, se han valorado 549 embarazos (62,30% del total) normales, de bajo riesgo, controlados hasta el final por atención primaria, con un rango de edad de 16-40 años. La prevalencia media de candidiasis es de un 18% (IC, 15,0-21,6). Su frecuencia aumenta a medida que se incrementa el número de gestaciones y disminuye a medida que aumenta la edad de la embarazada.ConclusionesLa prevalencia encontrada en nuestro estudio es de un 18%, y no está aumentando a medida que pasan los años.ObjectivesTo find the prevalence of vaginal candidiasis in pregnant women monitored through primary care and to see whether it is on the increase.DesignDescriptive and retrospective study of pregnant women.SettingCazoña Health District (34783 inhabitants).SubjectsThe entire obstetric population monitored by our health centre between 1992 and 1997 inclusive.Measurements and resultsRetrospective study of clinical histories of all the pregnant women seen at our health centre (878 pregnancies). After discounting those referred to obstetricians, abortions/ miscarriages and premature births, 549 normal low-risk pregnancies (62.30% of the total) were monitored to completion in primary care. The women's age range was 16 to 40. The mean prevalence of candidiasis was 18% (CI, 15.0-21.6). Its frequency increased as the number of pregnancies increased and dropped as the age of the pregnant women increased.ConclusionsPrevalence found in our study was 18% and did not increase as the years passed

    The regulation of neuronal mitochondrial metabolism by calcium

    Calcium signalling is fundamental to the function of the nervous system, in association with changes in ionic gradients across the membrane. Although restoring ionic gradients is energetically costly, a rise in intracellular Ca(2+) acts through multiple pathways to increase ATP synthesis, matching energy supply to demand. Increasing cytosolic Ca(2+) stimulates metabolite transfer across the inner mitochondrial membrane through activation of Ca(2+) -regulated mitochondrial carriers, whereas an increase in matrix Ca(2+) stimulates the citric acid cycle and ATP synthase. The aspartate-glutamate exchanger Aralar/AGC1 (Slc25a12), a component of the malate-aspartate shuttle (MAS), is stimulated by modest increases in cytosolic Ca(2+) and upregulates respiration in cortical neurons by enhancing pyruvate supply into mitochondria. Failure to increase respiration in response to small (carbachol) and moderate (K(+) -depolarization) workloads and blunted stimulation of respiration in response to high workloads (veratridine) in Aralar/AGC1 knockout neurons reflect impaired MAS activity and limited mitochondrial pyruvate supply. In response to large workloads (veratridine), acute stimulation of respiration occurs in the absence of MAS through Ca(2+) influx through the mitochondrial calcium uniporter (MCU) and a rise in matrix [Ca(2+) ]. Although the physiological importance of the MCU complex in work-induced stimulation of respiration of CNS neurons is not yet clarified, abnormal mitochondrial Ca(2+) signalling causes pathology. Indeed, loss of function mutations in MICU1, a regulator of MCU complex, are associated with neuromuscular disease. In patient-derived MICU1 deficient fibroblasts, resting matrix Ca(2+) is increased and mitochondria fragmented. Thus, the fine tuning of Ca(2+) signals plays a key role in shaping mitochondrial bioenergetics

    Late Cretaceous to Oligocene Magmatic Evolution of the Neuquén Basin

    Geochemical variations in arc- and within-plate magmatic associations since Late Cretaceous times are analyzed and correlated with the main tectonic changes that influenced the Neuquén Basin evolution. The collision and southward migration of the Farallon-Aluk mid-ocean ridge along the Chilean trench since 80 Ma have played an important role in controlling the Late Cretaceous to Oligocene magmatic evolution of the arc and retroarc zones. The passage of this spreading center through the Chilean trench induced the development of geochemically distinct magmatic associations since Late Cretaceous to Eocene times associated with the extensional reactivation of the Cretaceous fold and thrust belt. Then, by Late Oligocene times, a major plate tectonic reorganization occurred when the Farallon plate broke apart and the resulting Nazca plate started an orthogonal subduction regime beneath the South American plate with higher convergence rates. Then extensional basins and associated magmatism developed at this time destabilizing the Paleogene fold and thrust belt and establishing a more homogeneous tholeiitic signature along the Andean axis.Fil: Iannelli, Sofía.     Cretaceous Orogeny and Marine Transgression in the Southern Central and Northern Patagonian Andes: Aftermath of a Large-Scale Flat-Subduction Event?

    This review synthesizes the tectonomagmatic evolution of the southern Central andNorthern Patagonian Andes between 35°30?S to 48°S with the aim to spotlight earlycontractional phases on Andean orogenic building and to analyze their potential drivingprocesses. We examine early tectonic stages of the different fold and thrust belts that composethis Andean segment. Additionally, we study the magmatic arc behavior from a regionalperspective as an indicator of potential past subduction configurations during critical tectonicstages of orogenic construction. This revision proposes the existence of a continuous large-scaleflat subduction with a similar size to the present-largest flat-slab setting on earth. This particularprocess would have initiated diachronically in late Early Cretaceous times and achieved fulldevelopment in Late Cretaceous to earliest Paleocene, constructing a series of fold - thrust beltson the retro-arc zone from 35°30?S to 48°S. Furthermore, dynamic subsidence focused at theedges of the slab flattening before re-steepening beneath the foreland zone may explain suddenpaleogeographic changes in Maastrichtian-Danian times previously linked to continental tiltingand orogenic loading during a high sea level global stage.Fil: Gianni, Guido Martin.
