Generalized Stability Condition for Generalized and Doubly-Generalized LDPC Codes
In this paper, the stability condition for low-density parity-check (LDPC)
codes on the binary erasure channel (BEC) is extended to generalized LDPC
(GLDPC) codes and doublygeneralized LDPC (D-GLDPC) codes. It is proved that, in
both cases, the stability condition only involves the component codes with
minimum distance 2. The stability condition for GLDPC codes is always expressed
as an upper bound to the decoding threshold. This is not possible for D-GLDPC
codes, unless all the generalized variable nodes have minimum distance at least
3. Furthermore, a condition called derivative matching is defined in the paper.
This condition is sufficient for a GLDPC or DGLDPC code to achieve the
stability condition with equality. If this condition is satisfied, the
threshold of D-GLDPC codes (whose generalized variable nodes have all minimum

Construction of Near-Optimum Burst Erasure Correcting Low-Density Parity-Check Codes
In this paper, a simple, general-purpose and effective tool for the design of
low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes for iterative correction of bursts of
erasures is presented. The design method consists in starting from the
parity-check matrix of an LDPC code and developing an optimized parity-check
matrix, with the same performance on the memory-less erasure channel, and
suitable also for the iterative correction of single bursts of erasures. The
parity-check matrix optimization is performed by an algorithm called pivot
searching and swapping (PSS) algorithm, which executes permutations of
carefully chosen columns of the parity-check matrix, after a local analysis of
particular variable nodes called stopping set pivots. This algorithm can be in
principle applied to any LDPC code. If the input parity-check matrix is
designed for achieving good performance on the memory-less erasure channel,
then the code obtained after the application of the PSS algorithm provides good
joint correction of independent erasures and single erasure bursts. Numerical
results are provided in order to show the effectiveness of the PSS algorithm

Participatory, Visible and Sustainable. Designing a Community Website for a Minority Group
This paper tackles three aspects of community-based technological initiatives aimed to support minority groups’ public expression and communication: participation, visibility and sustainability. Participation requires\ud
the active involvement of the community members in various project phases (from design to evaluation), sharing decisional power with project leaders. Visibility\ud
refers to the capacity of community messages to reach a relevant audience outside the boundaries of the community itself. Sustainability indicates the capacity of a project to continue, under the control and management of the local community, beyond its “supported” lifetime. The mutual influence of these three dimensions is examined in general and also in the light of a specific case study: an initiative involving a Romani community in rural Romania, having as main outcome the development of a community website (www.romanivoices.com/podoleni)
Achieving sub-electron readout noise in Skipper CCDs
The readout noise for Charge-Coupled Devices (CCDs) has been the main
limitation when using these detectors for measuring small amplitude signals. A
readout system for a new scientific, low noise CCD is presented in this paper.
The Skipper CCD architecture, and its advantages for low noise applications are
discussed. A technique for obtaining sub-electron readout noise levels is
presented, and its noise and signal characteristics are derived. We demonstrate
a very low readout noise of RMS. Also, we show the results using the
detector in a low-energy X-ray detection experiment.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figure
Interactions between nutrition and gastrointestinal infections with parasitic nematodes in goats
Parasitic nematodes of the digestive tract remain one of the main constraints to goat production both in temperate and tropical
countries. The usual mode of control of these gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) based on the repeated use of anthelmintics
is now strongly questioned because of the increasing development of resistance to these molecules. Among the alternative
methods to anthelmintics currently available, the manipulation of host nutrition in order to improve the host resistance and/or
resilience to parasitic infections seems to represent one of the most promising options to reduce the dependence on conventional
chemotherapy and to favour the sustainable control of gastro intestinal nematode infections. This paper will review the available
information on the interactions between nutrition and nematode parasitism in dairy or meat goats both in temperate and tropical
conditions. It will refer to quantitative aspects of the diet (influence of the protein and/or energy parts) as well as to qualitative
components (effects of plant secondary metabolites on worm biology) and will discuss the specificities of goats in regard of
theses interactions
Application of biological growth risk models to the management of built heritage
La qualità degli spazi interni è fortemente legata alle condizioni igrotermiche che influenzano il comfort degli utenti e i rischi di conservazione del patrimonio edilizio. Inoltre, una gestione incurante di spazi espositivi con numerosi accessi può causare carichi eccessivi di umidità, e conseguenti fenomeni di degrado. In questo lavoro, è stata considerata una sala espositiva rappresentativa del patrimonio costruito. Il rischio di proliferazione biologica è indagato nelle condizioni climatiche di Milano e Barcellona, con diversi ratei di ventilazione e numero di visitatori. I risultati delineano la necessità di politiche informate da analisi avanzate per prevenire il rischio igrotermico, in assenza di impianti, che non è sempre possibile integrare nel patrimonio edilizio storico.The quality of the interior spaces is strongly related to the hygro-thermal conditions which affect the users’ comfort, and may yield to preservation risk for the built heritage. Moreover, careless management of exposition spaces with excessive occupancy may result in moisture loads that promote degradation. In this paper, as a case study, an exposition hall representative of the built heritage is considered. The microbiological growth risk is investigated at two different climate conditions, namely Milan and Barcelona, considering varying ventilation rates and number of visitors. The results outline the need of policies informed by advanced analyses to prevent hygro-thermal risk in the absence of dedicated building services, that cannot always be integrated in built heritage
Neoadjuvant eribulin mesylate following anthracycline and taxane in triple negative breast cancer: Results from the HOPE study
Background Eribulin mesylate (E) is indicated for metastatic breast cancer patients previously treated with anthracycline and taxane. We argued that E could also benefit patients eligible for neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Methods Patients with primary triple negative breast cancer 2 cm received doxorubicin 60 mg/m2 and paclitaxel 200 mg/m2 x 4 cycles (AT) followed by E 1.4 mg/m2 x 4 cycles. Primary endpoint was pathological complete response (pCR) rate; secondary and explorative endpoints included clinical/metabolic response rates and safety, and biomarker analysis, respectively. Using a two-stage Simon design, 43 patients were to be included provided that 4 of 13 patients had achieved pCR in the first stage of the study. Results In stage I of the study 13 women were enrolled, median age 43 years, tumor size 2–5 cm in 9/13 (69%), positive nodal status in 8/13 (61%). Main grade 3 adverse event was neutropenia (related to AT and E in 4 and 2 cases, respectively). AT followed by E induced clinical complete + partial responses in 11/13 patients (85%), pCR in 3/13 (23%). Median measurements of maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) resulted 13, 3, and 1.9 at baseline, after AT and E, respectively. Complete metabolic response (CMR) occurred after AT and after E in 2 and 3 cases, respectively. Notably, 2 of the 5 (40%) patients with CMR achieved pCR at surgery. Immunostaining of paired pre-/post-treatment tumor specimens showed a reduction of β-catenin, CyclinD1, Zeb-1, and c-myc expression, in the absence of N-cadherin modulation. The study was interrupted at stage I due to the lack of the required patients with pCR. Conclusions Despite the early study closure, preoperative E following AT showed clinical and biological activity in triple negative breast cancer patients. Furthermore, the modulation of β-catenin pathway core proteins, supposedly outside the domain of epithelial–mesenchymal transition, claims for further investigation. Exploiting Pilot Mixtures in Coded Random Access
The construction of preamble sequences for channel estimation by superposition of orthogonal pilots can improve performance of massive grant-free uplink from machine-type devices. In this letter, a technique is proposed to obtain full benefit from these 'pilot mixtures' in presence of a base station with a massive number of antennas. The proposed technique consists of combining pilot mixtures with an intra-slot successive interference cancellation (SIC) algorithm, referred to as inner SIC, to increase the number of decoded messages per slot. In framed systems, the synergic effect of inner SIC and of an outer SIC algorithm across slots, typical of coded random access protocols, allows achieving a very high reliability with a low number of packet replicas per active user
