    Herding an Adversarial Attacker to a Safe Area for Defending Safety-Critical Infrastructure

    This paper investigates a problem of defending safety-critical infrastructure from an adversarial aerial attacker in an urban environment. A circular arc formation of defenders is formed around the attacker, and vector-field based guidance laws herd the attacker to a predefined safe area in the presence of rectangular obstacles. The defenders' formation is defined based on a novel vector field that imposes super-elliptic contours around the obstacles, to closely resemble their rectangular shape. A novel finite-time stabilizing controller is proposed to guide the defenders to their desired formation while avoiding obstacles and inter-agent collisions.     An Intelligent Decision Support System for the Detection of Meat Spoilage using Multispectral Images

    In food industry, quality and safety are considered important issues worldwide that are directly related to health and social progress. The use of vision technology for quality testing of food production has the obvious advantage of being able to continuously monitor a production using non-destructive methods, thus increasing the quality and minimizing cost. The performance of an intelligent decision support system has been evaluated in monitoring the spoilage of minced beef stored either aerobically or under modified atmosphere packaging, at different storage temperatures (0, 5, 10, and 15 °C) utilising multispectral imaging information. This paper utilises a neuro-fuzzy model which incorporates a clustering pre-processing stage for the definition of fuzzy rules, while its final fuzzy rule base is determined by competitive learning. Initially, meat samples are classified according to their storage conditions, while identification models are then utilised for the prediction of the Total Viable Counts of bacteria. The innovation of the proposed approach is further extended to the identification of the temperature used for storage, utilizing only imaging spectral information. Results indicated that spectral information in combination with the proposed modelling scheme could be considered as an alternative methodology for the accurate evaluation of meat spoilage

    Pulmonary sarcoidosis associated with psoriasis vulgaris: coincidental occurrence or causal association? Case report

    BACKGROUND: Sarcoidosis is rarely associated with a distinct disease. One disease infrequently associated with sarcoidosis is psoriasis. CASE PRESENTATION: This case study describes a 38-year-old male, who presented with chest pain, high-grade fever, arthralgias and a skin rash accompanied by bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy on his chest radiograph. Extensive investigations including fiber-optic bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage and labial and skin biopsies, demonstrated that two distinct clinical entities co-existed in the same patient: pulmonary sarcoidosis and psoriasis vulgaris. Combination therapy for both diseases was applied and the patient was greatly improved. CONCLUSION: This is the first well-documented case of sarcoidosis and psoriasis in the same patient, reported on the basis of safe and widely-used techniques that were not available until fairly recently. These disorders might share common pathogenic mechanisms that could explain their co-existence in the patient

    Application of an electronic nose coupled with fuzzy-wavelet network for the detection of meat spoilage

    Food product safety is one of the most promising areas for the application of electronic noses. During the last twenty years, these sensor-based systems have made odour analyses possible. Their application into the area of food is mainly focused on quality control, freshness evaluation, shelf-life analysis and authenticity assessment. In this paper, the performance of a portable electronic nose has been evaluated in monitoring the spoilage of beef fillets stored either aerobically or under modified atmosphere packaging, at different storage temperatures. A novel multi-output fuzzy wavelet neural network model has been developed, which incorporates a clustering pre-processing stage for the definition of fuzzy rules. The dual purpose of the proposed modelling approach is not only to classify beef samples in the relevant quality class (i.e. fresh, semi-fresh and spoiled), but also to predict their associated microbiological population. Comparison results against advanced machine learning schemes indicated that the proposed modelling scheme could be considered as a valuable detection methodology in food microbiology

    Brine recovery from hypersaline wastewaters from table olive processing by combination of biological treatment and membrane technologies

    [EN] The fermentation brines from table olive processing (FTOP) are hypersaline effluents (conductivities higher than 75 mS·cm-1) with high organic matter concentrations (COD around 10 g·L-1), which also include phenolic compounds (between 700 and 1500 mg TY·L-1). In this work, an integrated process for the FTOP reuse as brine in the table olive processing has been evaluated. This integrated process consisted of a biological treatment followed by a membrane system, which included ultrafiltration (UF) plus nanofiltration (NF). The biological treatment was carried out by 6 L laboratory sequencing batch reactor (SBR). UF and NF were performed in laboratory plants for flat membranes of 0.0125 and 0.0072 m2, respectively. Each stream generated during the FTOP treatment (SBR effluent, and UF and NF permeates) were evaluated. The SBR eliminated around 80% of COD and 71% of total phenols concentration.     Global patient outcomes after elective surgery: prospective cohort study in 27 low-, middle- and high-income countries.

    BACKGROUND: As global initiatives increase patient access to surgical treatments, there remains a need to understand the adverse effects of surgery and define appropriate levels of perioperative care. METHODS: We designed a prospective international 7-day cohort study of outcomes following elective adult inpatient surgery in 27 countries. The primary outcome was in-hospital complications. Secondary outcomes were death following a complication (failure to rescue) and death in hospital. Process measures were admission to critical care immediately after surgery or to treat a complication and duration of hospital stay. A single definition of critical care was used for all countries. RESULTS: A total of 474 hospitals in 19 high-, 7 middle- and 1 low-income country were included in the primary analysis. Data included 44 814 patients with a median hospital stay of 4 (range 2-7) days. A total of 7508 patients (16.8%) developed one or more postoperative complication and 207 died (0.5%). The overall mortality among patients who developed complications was 2.8%. Mortality following complications ranged from 2.4% for pulmonary embolism to 43.9% for cardiac arrest. A total of 4360 (9.7%) patients were admitted to a critical care unit as routine immediately after surgery, of whom 2198 (50.4%) developed a complication, with 105 (2.4%) deaths. A total of 1233 patients (16.4%) were admitted to a critical care unit to treat complications, with 119 (9.7%) deaths. Despite lower baseline risk, outcomes were similar in low- and middle-income compared with high-income countries. CONCLUSIONS: Poor patient outcomes are common after inpatient surgery. Global initiatives to increase access to surgical treatments should also address the need for safe perioperative care. STUDY REGISTRATION: ISRCTN5181700
