Quantum simulation of ZnO nanowire piezotronics

    Get PDF
We address the problem of quantum transport in a nanometre sized two-terminal ZnO device subject to an external strain. The two junctions formed between the electrodes and the ZnO are generally taken as Ohmic and Schottky type, respectively. Unlike the conventional treatment to the piezopotential, we treat it as a potential barrier which is only induced at the interfaces. By calculating the transmission coefficient of a Fermi-energized electron that flows from one end to the other, it is found that the piezopotential has the effect of modulating the voltage threshold of the current flowing. The calculations are based on the quantum scattering theory. The work is believed to pave the way for investigating the quantum piezotronics

Advanced Continuum Model For Nano-Sized Thermoelectric Structures

    Get PDF
The size effect observed in nano-sized structures is considered in the proposed advanced continuum model for heat transfer. It is important for structures, where characteristic microstructural length is comparable with the phonon mean free-path. This feature can be captured by higher-grade continuum models and/or nonlocal modelling of constitutive laws in continuum theories. Both these approaches can be shown equivalent under certain assumptions. The governing equations are given by the PDE with higher-order derivatives than in classical continuum models, with the response of physically conjugated field being proportional to the gradients of primary fields. The variational principle is applied to derive the finite-element formulation for the solution of a thermoelectric 2-d boundary-value problem. Due to higherorder derivatives in gradient theory, it is necessary to use C1-continuous elements to guarantee the continuity of the derivatives at the element interfaces. Since it is not an easy task, a mixed FEM formulation is developed here

We report a broad comparative analysis of the spectroscopic and laser properties of solid solution Lutetium-Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (LuYAG, (LuxY1-x)3Al5O12) ceramics doped with Yb. The investigation was mainly aimed to assess the impact of the Lu/Y ratio on the Yb optical and laser properties. Therefore we analyzed a set of samples with different Y/Lu balance, namely 25/75, 50/50 and 75/25, with 15% Yb doping. We found that the Yb absorption and emission spectra changed from YAG to LuAG when gradually increasing in Lu content. Regarding the laser emission, remarkable results were achieved with all samples. Maximum output power was 8.2 W, 7.3 W and 8.7 W for Y/Lu balance 25/75, 50/50 and 75/25 respectively, at 1030 nm; the slope efficiency and the optical-to-optical efficiencies approached or exceeded 60% and 50% respectively. The tuning range was investigated using an intracavity ZnSe prism. The broadest tuning range (998 nm to 1063 nm) was obtained with Y/Lu balance 75/25, whereas the emission of the other two samples extended from 1000 nm to 1058 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comparative analysis of Yb:LuYAG ceramics or crystals as laser host across such a broad range of Y/Lu ratios

We report the first laser oscillation on Yb0.15:(Lu0.5Y0.5)3Al12 ceramics at room temperature. At 1030 nm we measured a maximum output power of 7.3 W with a corresponding slope efficiency of 55.4% by using an output coupler with a transmission of T = 39.2%. The spectroscopic properties are compared with those of the two parent garnets Yb:YAG and Yb:LuAG. To the best of our knowledge these are the first measurements reported in literature achieved with this new host

Funding: UK EPSRC grants ”Discovery” EP/P020631/1, ”ABC: Adaptive Brokerage for the Cloud” EP/R010528/1.This article presents an automatic k-means clustering solution targeting the Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer. We first introduce a multilevel parallel partition approach that not only partitions by dataflow and centroid, but also by dimension, which unlocks the potential of the hierarchical parallelism in the heterogeneous many-core processor and the system architecture of the supercomputer. The parallel design is able to process large-scale clustering problems with up to 196,608 dimensions and over 160,000 targeting centroids, while maintaining high performance and high scalability. Furthermore, we propose an automatic hyper-parameter determination process for k-means clustering, by automatically generating and executing the clustering tasks with a set of candidate hyper-parameter, and then determining the optimal hyper-parameter using a proposed evaluation method. The proposed auto-clustering solution can not only achieve high performance and scalability for problems with massive high-dimensional data, but also support clustering without sufficient prior knowledge for the number of targeted clusters, which can potentially increase the scope of k-means algorithm to new application areas.PostprintPeer reviewe

Plant polyprenols reduce demyelination and recover impaired oligodendrogenesis and neurogenesis in the cuprizone murine model of multiple sclerosis

Recent studies showed hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, and immunomodulatory properties of polyprenols isolated from the green verdure of Picea abies (L.) Karst. This study aimed to investigate effects of polyprenols on oligodendrogenesis, neurogenesis, and myelin content in the cuprizone demyelination model. Demyelination was induced by 0.5% cuprizone in CD-1 mice during 10 weeks. Nine cuprizone-treated animals received daily injections of polyprenols intraperitoneally at a dose of 12-mg/kg body weight during Weeks 6-10. Nine control animals and other nine cuprizone-treated received sham oil injections. At Week 10, brain sections were stained for myelin basic protein, neuro-glial antigen-2, and doublecortin to evaluate demyelination, oligodendrogenesis, and neurogenesis. Cuprizone administration caused a decrease in myelin basic protein in the corpus callosum, cortex, hippocampus, and the caudate putamen compared with the controls. Oligodendrogenesis was increased, and neurogenesis in the subventricular zone and the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus was decreased in the cuprizone-treated group compared with the controls. Mice treated with cuprizone and polyprenols did not show significant demyelination and differences in oligodendrogenesis and neurogenesis as compared with the controls. Our results suggest that polyprenols can halt demyelination, restore impaired neurogenesis, and mitigate reactive overproduction of oligodendrocytes caused by cuprizone neurotoxicity

Exact solution of the nuclear pairing problem

    Get PDF
In many applications to finite Fermi-systems, the pairing problem has to be treated exactly. We suggest a numerical method of exact solution based on SU(2) quasispin algebras and demonstrate its simplicity and practicality. We show that the treatment of binding energies with the use of the exact pairing and uncorrelated monopole contribution of other residual interactions can serve as an effective alternative to the full shell-model diagonalization in spherical nuclei. A self-consistent combination of the exactly treated pairing and Hartree-Fock method is discussed. Results for Sn isotopes indicate a good agreement with experimental data.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure

    Get PDF

NF-κB-inducing kinase regulates selected gene expression in the Nod2 signaling pathway

    Get PDF
The innate immune system surveys the extra- and intracellular environment for the presence of microbes. Among the intracellular sensors is a protein known as Nod2, a cytosolic protein containing a leucine-rich repeat domain. Nod2 is believed to play a role in determining host responses to invasive bacteria. A key element in upregulating host defense involves activation of the NF-κB pathway. It has been suggested through indirect studies that NF-κB-inducing kinase, or NIK, may be involved in Nod2 signaling. Here we have used macrophages derived from primary explants of bone marrow from wild-type mice and mice that either bear a mutation in NIK, rendering it inactive, or are derived from NIK(−/−) mice, in which the NIK gene has been deleted. We show that NIK binds to Nod2 and mediates induction of specific changes induced by the specific Nod2 activator, muramyl dipeptide, and that the role of NIK occurs in settings where both the Nod2 and TLR4 pathways are activated by their respective agonists. Specifically, we have linked NIK to the induction of the B-cell chemoattractant known as BLC and suggest that this chemokine may play a role in processes initiated by Nod2 activation that lead to improved host defense
