Estimating net primary productivity of croplands in Indo-Gangetic Plains using GOME-2 sun-induced fluorescence and MODIS NDVI
© 2018 Current Science Association, Bengaluru. Recently evolved satellite-based sun-induced fluorescence (SIF) spectroscopy is considered as a direct measure of photosynthetic activity of vegetation. We have used monthly averages of satellite-based SIF retrievals for three agricultural year cycles, i.e. May to April for each of the three years, viz. 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 to assess comparative performance of SIF and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) for predicting net primary productivity (NPP) over the Indo-Gangetic Plains, India. Results show that SIF values for C4 crop-dominated districts were higher than C3 crop-dominated districts during summer and low during winter for all three years. SIF explained more or less above 70% of variance in NPP. The variance explained by integrated NDVI ranged from 60% to 67%. Thus the present study has shown the potential of SIF data for improved modelling of agricultural productivity at a regional scale
INTEROPERABLE MODEL FOR BIORESOURCE DISTRIBUTED DATABASES
Recently, numerous frameworks and tools are being developed for enhancing access to data and services with a standardized view to communicate the advances in open information sharing. Another emerging field of data exploration is encountered in the coordination, examination and perception of bioresource data and are prompting corresponding new innovations. The bioresource information team aims to develop standards for nationwide data exchange by the establishment of a catalog service to locate and access biological data and information from across the country and information tool for decision makers. With the growth of open data sharing initiatives, the sharing of data among different and myriad sources has increased significantly, but major challenge lies in addressing the issues of interoperability during exchange and use since the data sources are heterogeneous and the data being organization specific is prepared with different (organization) specific data standards and platforms. This paper presents the model based on the study of different metadata standards and to develop a recommended standard for biodiversity information to support interoperability among heterogeneous databases under the umbrella of Indian Bioresource Information Network (IBIN) portal. The paper presents the mapping of different data standards into the IBIN standard for sharing species data in the form of distributed and interoperable web services to set the stage for interoperability
Absolute dimensions of eclipsing binaries. XXVI, Setting a new standard : masses, radii, and abundances for the F-type systems ADâBootis, VZâHydrae, and WZâOphiuchi
Context. Accurate mass, radius, and abundance determinations from binaries provide important information on stellar evolution, fundamental to central fields in modern astrophysics and cosmology.
Aims. We aim to determine absolute dimensions and abundances for the three F-type main-sequence detached eclipsing binaries ADBoo, VZHya, and WZOph and to perform a detailed comparison with results from recent stellar evolutionary models.
Methods. uvby light curves and uvbyÎČ standard photometry were obtained with the Strömgren Automatic Telescope at ESO, La Silla, radial velocity observations at CfA facilities, and supplementary high-resolution spectra with ESOâs FEROS spectrograph. State-ofthe-art methods were applied for the analyses: the EBOP andWilson-Devinney binary models, two-dimensional cross-correlation and
disentangling, and the VWA abundance analysis tool.
Results. Masses and radii that are precise to 0.5â0.7% and 0.4â0.9%, respectively, have been established for the components, which span the ranges of 1.1 to 1.4 M and 1.1 to 1.6 R. The [Fe/H] abundances are from â0.27 to +0.10, with uncertainties between 0.07 and 0.15 dex. We find indications of a slight α-element overabundance of [α/Fe] ⌠+0.1 for WZOph. The secondary component of ADBoo and both components of WZOph appear to be slightly active. Yale-Yonsai and Victoria-Regina evolutionary models fit the
components of ADBoo and VZHya almost equally well, assuming coeval formation, at ages of about 1.75/1.50 Gyr (ADBoo) and
1.25/1.00 Gyr (VZHya). BaSTI models, however, predict somewhat different ages for the primary and secondary components. For WZOph, the models from all three grids are significantly hotter than observed. A low He content, decreased envelope convection coupled with surface activity, and/or higher interstellar absorption would remove the discrepancy, but its cause has not been definitively identified.
Conclusions. We have demonstrated the power of testing and comparing recent stellar evolutionary models using eclipsing binaries, provided their abundances are known. The strongest limitations and challenges are set by Teff and interstellar absorption determinations, and by their effects on and correlation with abundance results
Four-colour photometry of eclipsing binaries. XLI uvby light curves for AD Bootis, HW Canis Majoris, SW Canis Majoris, V636 Centauri, VZ Hydrae, and WZ Ophiuchi
CONTEXT: Accurate mass, radius, and abundance determinations from binaries
provide important information on stellar evolution, fundamental to central
fields in modern astrophysics and cosmology.
AIMS: Within the long-term Copenhagen Binary Project, we aim to obtain
high-quality light curves and standard photometry for double-lined detached
eclipsing binaries with late A, F, and G type main-sequence components, needed
for the determination of accurate absolute dimensions and abundances, and for
detailed comparisons with results from recent stellar evolutionary models.
METHODS: Between March 1985 and July 2007, we carried out photometric
observations of AD Boo, HW CMA, SW CMa, V636 Cen, VZ Hya, and WZ Oph at the
Str"omgren Automatic Telescope at ESO, La Silla.
RESULTS: We obtained complete uvby light curves, ephemerides, and standard
uvby\beta indices for all six systems.For V636 Cen and HW CMa, we present the
first modern light curves, whereas for AD Boo, SW CMa, VZ Hya, and WZ Oph, they
are both more accurate and more complete than earlier data. Due to a high
orbital eccentricity (e = 0.50), combined with a low orbital inclination (i =
84.7), only one eclipse, close to periastron, occurs for HW CMa. For the two
other eccentric systems, V636 Cen (e = 0.134) and SW CMa (e = 0.316), apsidal
motion has been detected with periods of 5270 +/- 335 and 14900 +/- 3600 years,
respectively.Comment: Only change is: Bottom lines (hopefully) not truncated anymore.

Local structure study about Co in YBa(CuCo)O thin films using polarized XAFS
We have studied the local structure around Co in
YBa(CuCo)O thin films with three different
concentrations: x=0.07, 0.10, 0.17, and in a
PrBa(CuCo)O thin film of concentration x=0.05
using the X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) technique. Data were collected
at the Co -edge with polarizations both parallel and perpendicular to the
film surface. We find that the oxygen neighbors are well ordered and shortened
in comparison with YBCO Cu-O values to 1.80 \AA{} and 1.87 \AA{} in the
-axis and -plane, respectively. A comparison of further neighbors in the
thin film and powder data show that these peaks in the film are suppressed in
amplitude relative to the powder samples, which suggests there is more disorder
and/or distortions of the Co environment present in the thin films.Comment: 14 pages; To be submitted to Phys. Rev.
CNx-modified Fe3O4 as Pt nanoparticle support for the oxygen reduction reaction
A novel electrocatalyst support material, nitrogendoped carbon (CNx)-modified Fe3O4 (Fe3O4-CNx), was synthesized through carbonizing a polypyrrole-Fe3O4 hybridized precursor. Subsequently, Fe3O4-CNx-supported Pt (Pt/Fe3O4-CNx) nanocomposites were prepared by reducing Pt precursor in ethylene glycol solution and evaluated for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The Pt/Fe3O4-CNx catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The electrocatalytic activity and stability of the as-prepared electrocatalysts toward ORR were studied by cyclic voltammetry and steady-state polarization measurements. The results showed that Pt/ Fe3O4-CNx catalysts exhibited superior catalytic performance for ORR to the conventional Pt/C and Pt/C-CNx catalysts.Web of Scienc
Spatio-Temporal Trends of Fire in Slash and Burn Agriculture Landscape: A Case Study from Nagaland, India
Increasing incidences of fire from land conversion and residue burning in tropics is the major concern in global warming. Spatial and
temporal monitoring of trends of fire incidences is, therefore, significant in order to determine contribution of carbon emissions from slash
and burn agriculture. In this study, we analyzed time-series Terra / Aqua MODIS satellite hotspot products from 2001 to 2013 to derive
intra- and inter-annual trends in fire incidences in Nagaland state, located in the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot. Time-series regression
was applied to MODIS fire products at variable spatial scales in GIS. Significance of change in fire frequency at each grid level was tested
using t statistic. Spatial clustering of higher or lower fire incidences across study area was determined using Getis-OrdGi statistic. Maximum
fire incidences were encountered in moist mixed deciduous forests (46%) followed by secondary moist bamboo brakes (30%). In most
parts of the study area fire incidences peaked during March while in warmer parts (e.g. Mon district dominated by indigenous people) fire
activity starts as early as during November and peaks in January. Regression trend analysis captured noticeable areas with statistically
significant positive (e.g. Mokokchung, Wokha, Mon, Tuensang and Kiphire districts) and negative (e.g. Kohima and north-western part of
Mokokchung district) inter-annual fire frequency trends based on area-based aggregation of fire occurrences at different grid sizes.

IN VITRO FREE RADICAL SCAVENGING ACTIVITY AND PHENOL AND FLAVONOID CONTENT OF NERIUM INDICUM, PELTOPHORAM PTEROCARPUM AND ROSA SPPS. FLOWER EXTRACTS
Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate antioxidant activity and phenol and flavonoid content of three flowers viz. Nerium indicum,Peltophoram pterocarpum and Rosa spps extracts.Methods: The extraction was done by individual cold percolation method using solvents like hexane, ethyl acetate and acetone. Total phenolic andtotal flavonoid content of different extracts was determined using Folin-ciocalteu assays and aluminium chloride colorimetric method respectively.Antioxidant activity was carried out by ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and ABTS radical cation scavenging activity.Results: Total phenol content was more in acetone extract while total flavonoid content was more in ethyl acetate extract, in all the three flowerspecies. FRAP activity was maximum in acetone extracts while ABTS activity was more in ethyl acetate extracts.Conclusion: Phenolic and non-phenolic compounds contribute to the antioxidant activity of these three flower extracts.
