    Evaluation of left atrial systolic function in noncompaction cardiomyopathy by real-time three-dimensional echocardiography

    Background Noncompaction cardiomyopathy (NCCM) is a rare disorder with persistance of the embryonic pattern of myoarchitecture. NCCM is characterized by loosened, spongy myocardium associated with a high incidence of systolic and diastolic left ventricular (LV) dysfunction and heart failure (HF). It is known that LV dysfunction contributes to elevated left atrial (LA) and pulmonary vascular pressures, however atrial function has not been examined in NCCM. The objective of the present study was to assess LA systolic function characterized by LA ejection force (LAEF) in NCCM patients using real-time three-dimensional echocardiography (RT3DE) and to compare to control subjects. Methods The study comprised 17 patients with an established diagnosis of NCCM and their results were compared to 17 healthy age-matched controls with no evidence of cardiovascular disease. Forty-one percent of NCCM patients were in NYHA functional class II / III HF. Previously proposed echocardiographic diagnostic criteria for NCCM were used. All patients underwent conventional two-dimensional echocardiography and RT3DE. LAEF was measured based on MA annulus diameter (LAEF3D-MAD) and area (LAEF3D-MAA) using RT3DE. Results The presence and severity of mitral regurgitation were more frequent in NCCM patients than in control subjects. LV diameters and mitral annulus were significantly increased in NCCM patients. Compared with control subjects, both LAEF3D-MAD (3.8 ± 2.2 vs 2.3 ± 1.0 kdyne, P < 0.05) and LAEF3D-MAA (12.7 ± 7.6 vs 4.9 ± 2.1 kdyne, P < 0.01) were significantly increased in NCCM patients. Conclusions LAEF as a characteristic of LA systolic function is increased in NCCM patients compared to normal individuals. These results can suggest compensating left atrial work against the dysfunctional LV in NCCM patients

    Sweden offers a unique opportunity to researchers to construct comprehensive databases that encompass a wide variety of healthcare related data. Statistics Sweden and the National Board of Health and Welfare collect individual level data for all Swedish residents that ranges from medical diagnoses to socioeconomic information. In addition to the information collected by governmental agencies the medical profession has initiated nationwide Quality Registers that collect data on specific diagnoses and interventions. The Quality Registers analyze activity within healthcare institutions, with the aims of improving clinical care and fostering clinical research.This article is freely available via Open Access.     Measurements of (tt)over-barH Production and the CP Structure of the Yukawa Interaction between the Higgs Boson and Top Quark in the Diphoton Decay Channel

    The first observation of the (tt) over barH process in a single Higgs boson decay channel with the full reconstruction of the final state (H -> gamma gamma) is presented, with a significance of 6.6 standard deviations (sigma). The CP structure of Higgs boson couplings to fermions is measured, resulting in an exclusion of the pure CP-odd structure of the top Yukawa coupling at 3.2 sigma. The measurements are based on a sample of protonproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy root s = 13 TeV collected by the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1). The cross section times branching fraction of the (tt) over barH process is measured to be sigma B-(tt) over barH(gamma gamma) = 1.56(-0.32)(+0.34) th, which is compatible with the standard model prediction of 1.13(-0.11)(+0.08) fb. The fractional contribution of the CP-odd component is measured to be f(CP)(Hu) = 0.00 +/- 0.33.Peer reviewe

    Regional convergence and growth in Europe: understanding patterns and determinants

    The paper examines the pattern of regional convergence and the determinants of regional growth in Europe, providing a discussion of the issues that are of relevance to the theoretical conceptions and the subsequent design of regional development policy, supported by an illustrative empirical analysis. The analysis covers 249 NUTS II regions of the European Union in the period 1990-2003. Using as its basis the standard framework of (absolute) beta-convergence, the paper detects a mirror-image J-shaped relationship between regional growth and regional development levels. This type of relationship indicates that regional divergence factors are getting stronger, and, eventually, dominate, at more advanced levels of development. On the basis of a regional growth model, factors such as agglomeration economies, geography, economic integration and economic structure seem to create an overall unfavourable economic environment for lagging (and, possibly, less favoured) regions. Such an environment generates dilemmas and questions concerning the mix of policies that may promote growth and at the same time reduce regional inequalities in the European Union
