    Differential Encoding of Factors Influencing Predicted Reward Value in Monkey Rostral Anterior Cingulate Cortex

    Background: The value of a predicted reward can be estimated based on the conjunction of both the intrinsic reward value and the length of time to obtain it. The question we addressed is how the two aspects, reward size and proximity to reward, influence the responses of neurons in rostral anterior cingulate cortex (rACC), a brain region thought to play an important role in reward processing. Methods and Findings: We recorded from single neurons while two monkeys performed a multi-trial reward schedule task. The monkeys performed 1–4 sequential color discrimination trials to obtain a reward of 1–3 liquid drops. There were two task conditions, a valid cue condition, where the number of trials and reward amount were associated with visual cues, and a random cue condition, where the cue was picked from the cue set at random. In the valid cue condition, the neuronal firing is strongly modulated by the predicted reward proximity during the trials. Information about the predicted reward amount is almost absent at those times. In substantial subpopulations, the neuronal responses decreased or increased gradually through schedule progress to the predicted outcome. These two gradually modulating signals could be used to calculate the effect of time on the perception of reward value. In the random cue condition, little information about the reward proximity or reward amount is encoded during the course of the trial before reward delivery, but when the reward is actually delivered the responses reflect both the reward proximity and reward amount

    Combined Tevatron upper limit on gg->H->W+W- and constraints on the Higgs boson mass in fourth-generation fermion models

    Report number: FERMILAB-PUB-10-125-EWe combine results from searches by the CDF and D0 collaborations for a standard model Higgs boson (H) in the process gg->H->W+W- in p=pbar collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV. With 4.8 fb-1 of integrated luminosity analyzed at CDF and 5.4 fb-1 at D0, the 95% Confidence Level upper limit on \sigma(gg->H) x B(H->W+W-) is 1.75 pb at m_H=120 GeV, 0.38 pb at m_H=165 GeV, and 0.83 pb at m_H=200 GeV. Assuming the presence of a fourth sequential generation of fermions with large masses, we exclude at the 95% Confidence Level a standard-model-like Higgs boson with a mass between 131 and 204 GeV.We combine results from searches by the CDF and D0 collaborations for a standard model Higgs boson (H) in the process gg→H→W+W- in pp̅ collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at √s=1.96  TeV.     Search for B → μ μ And B0 → μ+ μ- Decays

    A search for the rare decays B → μ μ and B → μ μ is performed in pp collisions at ps = 7TeV, with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. In both decays, the number of events observed after all selection requirements is consistent with the expectation from background plus standard model signal predictions. The resulting upper limits on the branching fractions are B(B → μ μ-) < 7:7 × 10 and B(B → μ μ ) < 1:8 × 10 at 95% confidence level

    Captopril reduces the risk of nephropathy in IDDM patients with microalbuminuria

    In insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), microalbuminuria predicts renal and cardiovascular disease. We report a combined analysis of 235 normotensive IDDM patients with microalbuminuria who participated in two 24-month double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trials to assess the effects of captopril 50 mg twice daily on the progression to overt clinical albuminuria. Of the 225 patients who were evaluable on an intent to treat basis, 25 of 114 placebo-treated patients (21.9%) and 8 of 111 captopril-treated patients (7.2%) progressed to persistent clinical albuminuria. The risk of progression over 24 months was significantly reduced by captopril (p = 0.004) with a risk reduction of 69.2% (95% confidence interval (CI): 31.7 to 86.1%). This degree of risk reduction remained at the same level (62.9% [16.1-83.6%], p = 0.017) after adjustment for differences in time-varying mean arterial blood pressure. Albumin excretion rate increased by an average of 14.2% [3.1-26.5%] per year in the placebo-treated group compared with a reduction of 9.6% [-18.6-0.4%] per year in the captopril-treated group (p = 0.002). The rate of fall of creatinine clearance tended to be faster in the placebo-treated group than in the captopril-treated group (-6.4 [-10.2--2.5] vs -1.4 [-5.3-2.6] ml . min(-1). 1.73 m(-2), p = 0.07). Baseline albumin excretion rate (p < 0.0001) and glycated haemoglobin (p = 0.03) were independent predictors of progression to clinical albuminuria and changes in mean arterial blood pressure (p = 0.02) and serum cholesterol level (p = 0.003) were significantly associated with percentage changes in albumin excretion rate. Captopril reduces the risk of progression to overt nephropathy in IDDM patients with microalbuminuria, an effect partly independent of its blood pressure-lowering effects

    Individual variation in reward sensitivity may have an important role in early substance use and subsequent development of substance abuse. This may be especially important during adolescence, a transition period marked by approach behavior and a propensity toward risk taking, novelty seeking and alteration of the social landscape. However, little is known about the relative contribution of personality, behavior, and brain responses for prediction of alcohol use in adolescents. In this study, we applied factor analyses and structural equation modeling to reward-related brain responses assessed by functional magnetic resonance imaging during a monetary incentive delay task. In addition, novelty seeking, sensation seeking, impulsivity, extraversion, and behavioral measures of risk taking were entered as predictors of early onset of drinking in a sample of 14-year-old healthy adolescents (N=324). Reward-associated behavior, personality, and brain responses all contributed to alcohol intake with personality explaining a higher proportion of the variance than behavior and brain responses. When only the ventral striatum was used, a small non-significant contribution to the prediction of early alcohol use was found. These data suggest that the role of reward-related brain activation may be more important in addiction than initiation of early drinking, where personality traits and reward-related behaviors were more significant. With up to 26% of explained variance, the interrelation of reward-related personality traits, behavior, and neural response patterns may convey risk for later alcohol abuse in adolescence, and thus may be identified as a vulnerability factor for the development of substance use disorders
