Possible observation of phase separation near a quantum phase transition in doubly connected ultrathin superconducting cylinders of aluminum
The kinetic energy of superconducting electrons in an ultrathin, doubly
connected superconducting cylinder, determined by the applied flux, increases
as the cylinder diameter decreases, leading to a destructive regime around
half-flux quanta and a superconductor to normal metal quantum phase transition
(QPT). Regular step-like features in resistance vs. temperature curves taken at
fixed flux values were observed near the QPT in ultrathin Al cylinders. It is
proposed that these features are most likely resulted from a phase separation
near the QPT in which normal regions nucleate in a homogeneous superconducting

Geometrical destruction of the global phase coherence in ultrathin superconducting cylinders
The global phase coherence in doubly-connected superconductors leads to
fluxoid quantization, allowing the superfluid velocity vs to be controlled by
an applied magnetic flux. In ultrasmall samples this quantization requirement
leads, surprisingly, to the destruction of the phase coherence itself around
half-integer flux quanta, because of the sample-size-induced growth in vs, as
predicted by de Gennes. We report observations of the predicted phenomenon in
ultrathin Al and Au0.7In0.3 cylinders, and the corresponding phase diagram for
ultrathin superconducting cylinders. The new phase diagram features
disconnected superconducting regions, as opposed to the single one seen in the

A Framework to Manage the Complex Organisation of Collaborating: Its Application to Autonomous Systems
In this paper we present an analysis of the complexities of large group
collaboration and its application to develop detailed requirements for
collaboration schema for Autonomous Systems (AS). These requirements flow from
our development of a framework for collaboration that provides a basis for
designing, supporting and managing complex collaborative systems that can be
applied and tested in various real world settings. We present the concepts of
"collaborative flow" and "working as one" as descriptive expressions of what
good collaborative teamwork can be in such scenarios. The paper considers the
application of the framework within different scenarios and discuses the
utility of the framework in modelling and supporting collaboration in complex
organisational structures
Breadwinners and Homemakers: Migration and Changing Conjugal Expectations in Rural Bangladesh
The literature on marriage norms and aspirations across societies largely sees the institution as static â a tool for the assertion of masculinities and subordination of women. The changing meanings of marriage and conjugality in the contemporary context of globalisation have received scant attention. Based on research in rural Bangladesh, this article questions the usefulness of notions of autonomy and dependence in understanding conjugal relations and expectations in a context of widespread migration for extended periods, especially to overseas destinations, where mutuality is crucial for social reproduction, though in clearly genderdemarcated domains
Improved Experimental Limits on the Production of Magnetic Monopoles
We present new limits on low mass accelerator-produced point-like Dirac
magnetic monopoles trapped and bound in matter surrounding the D\O collision
region of the Tevatron at Fermilab (experiment E-882). In the context of a
Drell-Yan mechanism, we obtain cross section limits for the production of
monopoles with magnetic charge values of 1, 2, 3, and 6 times the minimum Dirac
charge of the order of picobarns, some hundred times smaller than found in
similar previous Fermilab searches. Mass limits inferred from these cross

Never the twain shall meet: a critical appraisal of the combination of discourse and psychoanalytic theory in studies of men and masculinity
In recent years there has been a number of attempts by different researchers to study men and masculinity using a combination of discourse theory and psychoanalysis. The main reason for this development is the sense that, on its own, discourse theory provides an incomplete account of masculine subjectivity. Psychoanalysis is thought to be able to fill those gaps. In this paper I want to begin by reviewing these arguments. I will provide an outline of the alleged deficiencies in discursive approaches to men and masculinity before going on to examine some of the work that has attempted the above synthesis. What I aim to show is that, for a number of reasons, such attempts are bound to fail. Instead, I will argue that better progress can be made in studies of masculinity by remaining within the theoretical boundaries of Discursive Psychology
An Exploratory Study into the Factors Impeding Ethical Consumption
Although consumers are increasingly engaged with ethical factors when forming opinions about products and making purchase decisions, recent studies have highlighted significant differences between consumersâ intentions to consume ethically, and their actual purchase behaviour. This article contributes to an understanding of this âethical purchasing gapâ through a review of existing literature, and the inductive analysis of focus group discussions. A model is suggested which includes exogenous variables such as moral maturity and age which have been well covered in the literature, together with further impeding factors identified from the focus group discussions. For some consumers, inertia in purchasing behaviour was such that the decision-making process was devoid of ethical considerations. Several manifested their ethical views through post-purchase dissonance and retrospective feelings of guilt. Others displayed a reluctance to consume ethically due to personal constraints, a perceived negative impact on image or quality, or an outright negation of responsibility. Those who expressed a desire to consume ethically often seemed deterred by cynicism, which caused them to question the impact they, as an individual, could achieve. These findings enhance the understanding of ethical consumption decisions and provide a platform for future research in this area
Electron-based crystalline undulator
We discuss the features of a crystalline undulator of the novel type based on
the effect of a planar channeling of ultra-relativistic electrons in a
periodically bent crystals. It is demonstrated that an electron-based undulator
is feasible in the tens of GeV range of the beam energies, which is noticeably
higher than the energy interval allowed in a positron-based undulator.
Numerical analysis of the main parameters of the undulator as well as the
characteristics of the emitted undulator radiation is carried out for 20 and 50
GeV electrons channeling in diamond and silicon crystals along the (111)

Fermi LAT Observations of the Supernova Remnant W28 (G6.4-0.1)
We present detailed analysis of the two gamma-ray sources,1FGL J1801.3-2322c
and 1FGL J1800.5-2359c,that have been found toward the supernova remnant(SNR)
W28 with the Large Area Telescope(LAT) on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space
Telescope.1FGL J1801.3-2322c is found to be an extended source within the
boundary of SNR W28,and to extensively overlap with the TeV gamma-ray source
HESS J1801-233,which is associated with a dense molecular cloud interacting
with the supernova remnant.The gamma-ray spectrum measured with LAT from
0.2--100 GeV can be described by a broken power-law function with a break of
~1GeV,and photon indices of 2.090.08(stat)0.28(sys) below the break
and 2.740.06(stat)0.09(sys) above the break.Given the clear
association between HESS J1801-233 and the shocked molecular cloud and a
smoothly connected spectrum in the GeV--TeV band,we consider the origin of the
gamma-ray emission in both GeV and TeV ranges to be the interaction between
particles accelerated in the SNR and the molecular cloud.The decay of neutral
pions produced in interactions between accelerated hadrons and dense molecular
gas provide a reasonable explanation for the broadband gamma-ray spectrum. 1FGL
J1800.5-2359c, located outside the southern boundary of SNR W28, cannot be
resolved.An upper limit on the size of the gamma-ray emission was estimated to
be ~16 using events above ~2GeV under the assumption of a circular shape
with uniform surface brightness. It appears to coincide with the TeV source
HESS J1800-240B,which is considered to be associated with a dense molecular
cloud that contains the ultra compact HII region W28A2(G5.89-0.39).We found no
significant gamma-ray emission in the LAT energy band at the positions of TeV
sources HESS J1800-230A and HESS J1800-230C.The LAT data for HESS J1800-230A
combined with the TeV data points indicate a spectral break between 10GeV and

PSR J1856+0245: Arecibo Discovery of a Young, Energetic Pulsar Coincident with the TeV Gamma-ray Source HESS J1857+026
We present the discovery of the Vela-like radio pulsar J1856+0245 in the
Arecibo PALFA survey. PSR J1856+0245 has a spin period of 81ms, a
characteristic age of 21kyr, and a spin-down luminosity Edot = 4.6 x 10^36
ergs/s. It is positionally coincident with the TeV gamma-ray source HESS
J1857+026, which has no other known counterparts. Young, energetic pulsars
create wind nebulae, and more than a dozen pulsar wind nebulae have been
associated with very-high-energy (100GeV-100TeV) gamma-ray sources discovered
with the HESS telescope. The gamma-ray emission seen from HESS J1857+026 is
potentially produced by a pulsar wind nebula powered by PSR J1856+0245; faint
X-ray emission detected by ASCA at the pulsar's position supports this
hypothesis. The inferred gamma-ray efficiency is epsilon_gamma = L_gamma/Edot =
3.1% (1-10TeV, for a distance of 9kpc), comparable to that observed in similar
