Cu-BTC Functional Microdevices as Smart Tools for Capture and Preconcentration of Nerve Agents
Cu-based metal-organic framework (MOF) microdevices are applied in sampling and preconcentration of nerve agents (NAs) diluted in gaseous streams. An in situ electrochemical-assisted synthesis of a Cu-benzene-1, 3, 5-tricarboxylate (BTC) thick film is carried out to functionalize a Cu-modified glass substrate. This simple, rapid, reproducible, and easy-to-integrate MOF synthesis approach enables the microfabrication of functional micro-preconcentrators with a large Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area (above 2000 cm2) and an active pore volume (above 90 nL) for the efficient adsorption of nerve agent molecules along the microfluidic channel 2.5 cm in length. The equilibrium adsorption capacity of the bulk material has been characterized through thermogravimetric analysis after exposure to controlled atmospheres of a sarin gas surrogate, dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), in both dry and humid conditions (30% RH at 293 K). Breakthrough tests at the ppm level (162 mg/m3) reveal equilibrium adsorption capacities up to 691 mg/g. The preconcentration performance of such ”-devices when dealing with highly diluted surrogate atmosphere, i.e., 520 ppbV (2.6 mg/m3) at 298 K, leads to preconcentration coefficients up to 171 for sample volume up to 600 STP cm3. We demonstrate the potentialities of Cu-BTC micro-preconcentrators as smart first responder tools for "on-field" detection of nerve agents in the gas phase at relevant conditions
Synthesis and gas adsorption properties of mesoporous silica-NH2-MIL-53(Al) core-shell spheres
Ordered mesoporous silica-NH2-MIL-53(Al) core-shell spheres of about 4 ”m in diameter have been synthesized by seeding the corresponding mesoporous silica spheres (MSSs) with crystals of NH2-MIL-53(Al) and subsequent secondary crystal growth into a MOF shell. The morphology of the particles was analyzed by SEM, while TGA, EDX and XRD characterizations gave information on the composition and structure of this material and the activation of the MOF. N2 adsorption analysis revealed that the NH2-MIL-53(Al) shell controlled the access of guest molecules into the hydrophilic silica mesoporous structure, while the breathing behavior of the microporous NH2-MIL-53(Al) shell was confirmed by CO2 adsorption isotherms
Background discrimination capabilities of a heat and ionization germanium cryogenic detector
The discrimination capabilities of a 70 g heat and ionization Ge bolometer
are studied. This first prototype has been used by the EDELWEISS Dark Matter
experiment, installed in the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane, for direct
detection of WIMPs. Gamma and neutron calibrations demonstrate that this type
of detector is able to reject more than 99.6% of the background while retaining
95% of the signal, provided that the background events distribution is not
biased towards the surface of the Ge crystal. However, the 1.17 kg.day of data
taken in a relatively important radioactive environment show an extra
population slightly overlapping the signal. This background is likely due to
interactions of low energy photons or electrons near the surface of the
crystal, and is somewhat reduced by applying a higher charge-collecting inverse
bias voltage (-6 V instead of -2 V) to the Ge diode. Despite this
contamination, more than 98% of the background can be rejected while retaining
50% of the signal. This yields a conservative upper limit of 0.7
event.day^{-1}.kg^{-1}.keV^{-1}_{recoil} at 90% confidence level in the 15-45
keV recoil energy interval; the present sensitivity appears to be limited by
the fast ambient neutrons. Upgrades in progress on the installation are
summarized.Comment: Submitted to Astroparticle Physics, 14 page
Malaria prophylaxis policy for travellers from Europe to the Indian Sub Continent
Analysis of malaria imported into eight European countries from the Indian sub-continent (ISC) (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka) led to a consensus statement on the use of chemoprophylaxis within TropNetEurop. The proportion of cases from the ISC in 2004 ranged from 1.4%â4.6% of total imported cases. Plasmodium falciparum cases reported from the eight countries was only 23 (13% of all cases from the region). Total malaria reports between 1999â2004 fell from 317 to 180. The risk of malaria in UK residents visiting the region was > 1 case per 1,000 years exposed. The group recommended non-selective prescribing of chemoprophylaxis for visitors to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka should be dropped
Event categories in the EDELWEISS WIMP search experiment
Four categories of events have been identified in the EDELWEISS-I dark matter
experiment using germanium cryogenic detectors measuring simultaneously charge
and heat signals. These categories of events are interpreted as electron and
nuclear interactions occurring in the volume of the detector, and electron and
nuclear interactions occurring close to the surface of the detectors(10-20 mu-m
of the surface). We discuss the hypothesis that low energy surface nuclear
recoils, which seem to have been unnoticed by previous WIMP searches, may
provide an interpretation of the anomalous events recorded by the UKDMC and
Saclay NaI experiments. The present analysis points to the necessity of taking
into account surface nuclear and electron recoil interactions for a reliable
estimate of background rejection factors.Comment: 11 pages, submitted to Phys. Lett.
NectarCAM : a camera for the medium size telescopes of the Cherenkov Telescope Array
NectarCAM is a camera proposed for the medium-sized telescopes of the
Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) covering the central energy range of ~100 GeV
to ~30 TeV. It has a modular design and is based on the NECTAr chip, at the
heart of which is a GHz sampling Switched Capacitor Array and a 12-bit Analog
to Digital converter. The camera will be equipped with 265 7-photomultiplier
modules, covering a field of view of 8 degrees. Each module includes the
photomultiplier bases, high voltage supply, pre-amplifier, trigger, readout and
Ethernet transceiver. The recorded events last between a few nanoseconds and
tens of nanoseconds. The camera trigger will be flexible so as to minimize the
read-out dead-time of the NECTAr chips. NectarCAM is designed to sustain a data
rate of more than 4 kHz with less than 5\% dead time. The camera concept, the
design and tests of the various subcomponents and results of thermal and
electrical prototypes are presented. The design includes the mechanical
structure, cooling of the electronics, read-out, clock distribution, slow
control, data-acquisition, triggering, monitoring and services.Comment: In Proceedings of the 34th International Cosmic Ray Conference

Dark Matter Search in the Edelweiss Experiment
Preliminary results obtained with 320g bolometers with simultaneous
ionization and heat measurements are described. After a few weeks of data
taking, data accumulated with one of these detectors are beginning to exclude
the upper part of the DAMA region. Prospects for the present run and the second
stage of the experiment, EDELWEISS-II, using an innovative reversed cryostat
allowing data taking with 100 detectors, are briefly described.Comment: IDM 2000, 3rd International Workshop on the Identification of Dark

Topological and geometrical restrictions, free-boundary problems and self-gravitating fluids
Let (P1) be certain elliptic free-boundary problem on a Riemannian manifold
(M,g). In this paper we study the restrictions on the topology and geometry of
the fibres (the level sets) of the solutions f to (P1). We give a technique
based on certain remarkable property of the fibres (the analytic representation
property) for going from the initial PDE to a global analytical
characterization of the fibres (the equilibrium partition condition). We study
this analytical characterization and obtain several topological and geometrical
properties that the fibres of the solutions must possess, depending on the
topology of M and the metric tensor g. We apply these results to the classical
problem in physics of classifying the equilibrium shapes of both Newtonian and
relativistic static self-gravitating fluids. We also suggest a relationship
with the isometries of a Riemannian manifold.Comment: 36 pages. In this new version the analytic representation hypothesis
is proved. Please address all correspondence to D. Peralta-Sala
The EDELWEISS Experiment : Status and Outlook
The EDELWEISS Dark Matter search uses low-temperature Ge detectors with heat
and ionisation read- out to identify nuclear recoils induced by elastic
collisions with WIMPs from the galactic halo. Results from the operation of 70
g and 320 g Ge detectors in the low-background environment of the Modane
Underground Laboratory (LSM) are presented.Comment: International Conference on Dark Matter in Astro and Particle Physics
