Structure-activity relationship study of the plant-derived decapeptide OSIP108 inhibiting Candida albicans biofilm formation
We performed a structure-activity relationship study of the antibiofilm plant-derived decapeptide OSIP108. Introduction of positively charged amino acids R, H, and K resulted in an up-to-5-fold-increased antibiofilm activity against Candida albicans compared to native OSIP108, whereas replacement of R9 resulted in complete abolishment of its antibiofilm activity. By combining the most promising amino acid substitutions, we found that the double-substituted OSIP108 analogue Q6R/G7K had an 8-fold-increased antibiofilm activity
A first-in-human, randomized, controlled, subject- and reviewer-blinded multicenter study of Actamaxâą Adhesion Barrier
Purpose:
Post-surgical adhesions remain a significant concern following abdominopelvic surgery. This study was to assess safety, manageability and explore preliminary efficacy of applying a degradable hydrogel adhesion barrier to areas of surgical trauma following gynecologic laparoscopic abdominopelvic surgery.
Methods:
This first-in-human, prospective, randomized, multicenter, subject- and reviewer-blinded clinical study was conducted in 78 premenopausal women (18â46 years) wishing to maintain fertility and undergoing gynecologic laparoscopic abdominopelvic surgery with planned clinically indicated second-look laparoscopy (SLL) at 4â12 weeks. The first two patients of each surgeon received hydrogel, up to 30 mL sprayed over all sites of surgical trauma, and were assessed for safety and application only (n = 12). Subsequent subjects (n = 66) were randomized 1:1 to receive either hydrogel (Treatment, n = 35) or not (Control, n = 31); 63 completed the SLL.
Results:
No adverse event was assessed as serious, or possibly device related. None was severe or fatal. Adverse events were reported for 17 treated subjects (17/47, 36.2%) and 13 Controls (13/31, 41.9%). For 95.7% of treated subjects, surgeons found the device âeasyâ or âvery easyâ to use; in 54.5%, some residual material was evident at SLL. For 63 randomized subjects who completed the SLL, adjusted between-group difference in the change from baseline adhesion score demonstrated a 41.4% reduction for Treatment compared with Controls (p = 0.017), with a 49.5% reduction (p = 0.008) among myomectomy subjects (n = 34).
Conclusion:
Spray application of a degradable hydrogel adhesion barrier during gynecologic laparoscopic abdominopelvic surgery was performed easily and safely, without evidence of clinically significant adverse outcomes. Data suggest the hydrogel was effective in reducing postoperative adhesion development, particularly following myomectomy

In the present review, we provide an overview of antifungal peptides isolated from plants, insects, amphibians and mammals that induce apoptosis. Potentiation of Antibiofilm Activity of Amphotericin B by Superoxide Dismutase Inhibition
This study demonstrates a role for superoxide dismutases (Sods) in governing tolerance of Candida albicans biofilms to amphotericin B (AmB). Coincubation of C. albicans biofilms with AmB and the Sod inhibitors N,NâČ-diethyldithiocarbamate (DDC) or ammonium tetrathiomolybdate (ATM) resulted in reduced viable biofilm cells and increased intracellular reactive oxygen species levels as compared to incubation of biofilm cells with AmB, DDC, or ATM alone. Hence, Sod inhibitors can be used to potentiate the activity of AmB against C. albicans biofilms
Single-machine scheduling with stepwise tardiness costs and release times
We study a scheduling problem that belongs to the yard operations component of the railroad planning problems, namely the hump sequencing problem. The scheduling problem is characterized as a single-machine problem with stepwise tardiness cost objectives. This is a new scheduling criterion which is also relevant in the context of traditional machine scheduling problems. We produce complexity results that characterize some cases of the problem as pseudo-polynomially solvable. For the difficult-to-solve cases of the problem, we develop mathematical programming formulations, and propose heuristic algorithms. We test the formulations and heuristic algorithms on randomly generated single-machine scheduling problems and real-life datasets for the hump sequencing problem. Our experiments show promising results for both sets of problems
Ownership and control in a competitive industry
We study a differentiated product market in which an investor initially owns a controlling stake in one of two competing firms and may acquire a non-controlling or a controlling stake in a competitor, either directly using her own assets, or indirectly via the controlled firm. While industry profits are maximized within a symmetric two product monopoly, the investor attains this only in exceptional cases. Instead, she sometimes acquires a noncontrolling stake. Or she invests asymmetrically rather than pursuing a full takeover if she acquires a controlling one. Investigating a Hybrid Metaheuristic For Job Shop Rescheduling
Previous research has shown that artificial immune systems can be used to
produce robust schedules in a manufacturing environment. The main goal is to
develop building blocks (antibodies) of partial schedules that can be used to
construct backup solutions (antigens) when disturbances occur during
production. The building blocks are created based upon underpinning ideas from
artificial immune systems and evolved using a genetic algorithm (Phase I). Each
partial schedule (antibody) is assigned a fitness value and the best partial
schedules are selected to be converted into complete schedules (antigens). We
further investigate whether simulated annealing and the great deluge algorithm
can improve the results when hybridised with our artificial immune system
(Phase II). We use ten fixed solutions as our target and measure how well we
cover these specific scenarios
TNOs are Cool: A survey of the trans-Neptunian region V. Physical characterization of 18 Plutinos using Herschel PACS observations
We present Herschel PACS photometry of 18 Plutinos and determine sizes and
albedos for these objects using thermal modeling. We analyze our results for
correlations, draw conclusions on the Plutino size distribution, and compare to
earlier results. Flux densities are derived from PACS mini scan-maps using
specialized data reduction and photometry methods. In order to improve the
quality of our results, we combine our PACS data with existing Spitzer MIPS
data where possible, and refine existing absolute magnitudes for the targets.
The physical characterization of our sample is done using a thermal model.
Uncertainties of the physical parameters are derived using customized Monte
Carlo methods. The correlation analysis is performed using a bootstrap Spearman
rank analysis. We find the sizes of our Plutinos to range from 150 to 730 km
and geometric albedos to vary between 0.04 and 0.28. The average albedo of the
sample is 0.08 \pm 0.03, which is comparable to the mean albedo of Centaurs,
Jupiter Family comets and other Trans-Neptunian Objects. We were able to
calibrate the Plutino size scale for the first time and find the cumulative
Plutino size distribution to be best fit using a cumulative power law with q =
2 at sizes ranging from 120-400 km and q = 3 at larger sizes. We revise the
bulk density of 1999 TC36 and find a density of 0.64 (+0.15/-0.11) g cm-3. On
the basis of a modified Spearman rank analysis technique our Plutino sample
appears to be biased with respect to object size but unbiased with respect to
albedo. Furthermore, we find biases based on geometrical aspects and color in
our sample. There is qualitative evidence that icy Plutinos have higher albedos

H.E.S.S. observations of gamma-ray bursts in 2003-2007
Very-high-energy (VHE; >~100 GeV) gamma-rays are expected from gamma-ray
bursts (GRBs) in some scenarios. Exploring this photon energy regime is
necessary for understanding the energetics and properties of GRBs. GRBs have
been one of the prime targets for the H.E.S.S. experiment, which makes use of
four Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) to detect VHE gamma-rays.
Dedicated observations of 32 GRB positions were made in the years 2003-2007 and
a search for VHE gamma-ray counterparts of these GRBs was made. Depending on
the visibility and observing conditions, the observations mostly start minutes
to hours after the burst and typically last two hours. Results from
observations of 22 GRB positions are presented and evidence of a VHE signal was
found neither in observations of any individual GRBs, nor from stacking data
from subsets of GRBs with higher expected VHE flux according to a
model-independent ranking scheme. Upper limits for the VHE gamma-ray flux from
the GRB positions were derived. For those GRBs with measured redshifts,
differential upper limits at the energy threshold after correcting for
absorption due to extra-galactic background light are also presented.Comment: 9 pages, 4 tables, 3 figure
