    The fisheye of the comet interceptor's EnVisS camera

    Entire Visible Sky (EnVisS) camera is one of the payload proposed for the ESA selected F-Class mission Comet Interceptor. The main aim of the mission is the study of a dynamic new comet, or an interstellar object, entering the inner solar system for the first time. The Comet Interceptor mission is conceived to be composed of three spacecraft: a parent spacecraft A and two, spacecraft B1 and B2, dedicated to a close and risky fly-by. EnVisS will be mounted on spacecraft B2, which is foreseen to be spin-stabilized. The EnVisS camera is designed to capture the entire sky in some visible wavelength bands while the spacecraft pass through the comet's coma. EnVisS optical head is composed of a fisheye lens with a field of view of 180° x 40° coupled with an imaging detector equipped with both band-pass and polarimetric filters. The design of fisheye lenses requires to take into account some issues typical of very wide-angle lenses. The fundamental origin of the optical problems resides on the entrance pupil shift at large angle, where the paraxial approximation is no more valid: chief rays angles on the object side are not preserved passing through the optics preceding the aperture stop (fore-optics). This effect produces an anamorphic deformation of the image on the focal plane, i.e. the focal length is changing along the elevation angles. Tracing the rays appropriately requires some effort by the designer. It has to be considered that distortion, including anamorphism, is an aberration that does not affect the quality of a point source image, thus it can be present also in well corrected lenses. In this paper the optical design of the fisheye lens, that will be mounted on the EnVisS camera for the ESA F-class "Comet Interceptor" mission, will be presented together with the initial optical requirements and the final expected optical performances

    The optical head of the EnVisS camera for the Comet Interceptor ESA mission: Phase 0 study

    EnVisS (Entire Visible Sky) is an all-sky camera specifically designed to fly on the space mission Comet Interceptor. This mission has been selected in June 2019 as the first European Space Agency (ESA) Fast mission, a modest size mission with fast implementation. Comet Interceptor aims to study a dynamically new comet, or interstellar object, and its launch is scheduled in 2029 as a companion to the ARIEL mission. The mission study phase, called Phase 0, has been completed in December 2019, and then the Phase A study had started. Phase A will last for about two years until mission adoption expected in June 2022. The Comet Interceptor mission is conceived to be composed of three spacecraft: spacecraft A devoted to remote sensing science, and the other two, spacecraft B1 and B2, dedicated to a fly-by with the comet. EnVisS will be mounted on spacecraft B2, which is foreseen to be spin-stabilized. The camera is developed with the scientific task to image, in push-frame mode, the full comet coma in different colors. A set of ad-hoc selected broadband filters and polarizers in the visible range will be used to study the full scale distribution of the coma gas and dust species. The camera configuration is a fish-eye lens system with a FoV of about 180°x45°.     The PRIAMO study: age- and sex-related relationship between prodromal constipation and disease phenotype in early Parkinson's disease.

    OBJECTIVES: To explore the impact of sex and age on relationship between prodromal constipation and disease phenotype in Parkinson's disease at early stages. METHODS: A total of 385 Parkinson's disease patients from the PRIAMO study were classified according to the presence of prodromal constipation and followed for 24 months. Multivariable mixed-effect models were applied. All analyses were performed separately for sex (64.1% men) and median age (different by sex: 67 years-old in men and 68 years-old in women). RESULTS: As for sex, prodromal constipation was associated with greater odds of attention/memory complaints and apathy symptoms in women only. As for age, prodromal constipation was associated with lower cognitive and higher apathy scores in older patients only. CONCLUSIONS: Prodromal constipation anticipates lower cognitive performances and more severe apathy since the earliest stages in women and older patients. Sex- and age-related heterogeneity of prodromal markers of Parkinson's disease may impact disease phenotype

    The Comet Interceptor Mission

    Here we describe the novel, multi-point Comet Interceptor mission. It is dedicated to the exploration of a little-processed long-period comet, possibly entering the inner Solar System for the first time, or to encounter an interstellar object originating at another star. The objectives of the mission are to address the following questions: What are the surface composition, shape, morphology, and structure of the target object? What is the composition of the gas and dust in the coma, its connection to the nucleus, and the nature of its interaction with the solar wind? The mission was proposed to the European Space Agency in 2018, and formally adopted by the agency in June 2022, for launch in 2029 together with the Ariel mission. Comet Interceptor will take advantage of the opportunity presented by ESA’s F-Class call for fast, flexible, low-cost missions to which it was proposed. The call required a launch to a halo orbit around the Sun-Earth L2 point. The mission can take advantage of this placement to wait for the discovery of a suitable comet reachable with its minimum ΔV capability of 600 ms−1. Comet Interceptor will be unique in encountering and studying, at a nominal closest approach distance of 1000 km, a comet that represents a near-pristine sample of material from the formation of the Solar System. It will also add a capability that no previous cometary mission has had, which is to deploy two sub-probes – B1, provided by the Japanese space agency, JAXA, and B2 – that will follow different trajectories through the coma. While the main probe passes at a nominal 1000 km distance, probes B1 and B2 will follow different chords through the coma at distances of 850 km and 400 km, respectively. The result will be unique, simultaneous, spatially resolved information of the 3-dimensional properties of the target comet and its interaction with the space environment.     The interaction of Pseudomonas aeruginosa exotoxin A (ETA) with lipid monolayers was studied by measuring the variation in surface pressure. ETA adsorbs to the monolayer, occupying an average area of approximately 4.6 nm2 per molecule, up to a maximum density of one molecule per 28 nm2 of lipid film, which corresponds roughly to the cross-sectional area of the toxin. This suggests that ETA molecules adsorb until they contact each other, but insert only a small portion into the lipid film. The kinetic process could be described by a Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The apparent association and dissociation rate constants were determined, as were their dependence upon toxin concentration, membrane composition, pH, and ionic strength. Two parameters were found to be paramount for this interaction: pH and surface potential of the lipid. It appears that ETA binding occurs only in a conformational state induced by low pH and is promoted by an electrostatic interaction between a positively charged region of the protein and the negative charge of acidic phospholipids. On the basis of a simple model, the salient features of ETA involved in its adsorption were derived: 1) the existence of a conformational state induced by the protonation of a group with pK 4.5 +/- 0.2; 2) a positive charge of 1.9 +/- 0.3 e.u. able to interact with the surface potential of the membrane; 3) the fraction of potential experienced by the protein in the activated state that precedes binding, approximately 80%; 4) the intrinsic adsorption and desorption rate constants, k(a)0 = (4.8 +/- 0.3) x 10(3) M(-1) s(-1) and k(d)0 = (4.4 +/- 0.4) x 10(-4) s(-1). These rate constants are independent of pH and lipid and buffer composition, and provide a dissociation constant Kd approximately 90 nM

    This case report on one stage surgical treatment of meningoencephalocele offers the opportunity for a revision of the most recent trends expressed by other authors on this topic. Surgical technique involved a system of rigid fixations by means of microplates which, according to our experience in other cases, is particularly advisable in pediatric age. We find that the simultaneous utilization of calvarial bone grafts facilitates a better reconstruction of the cranial base, and also offers greater stability in results
