The solar wind in time â II. 3D stellar wind structure and radio emission
In this work, we simulate the evolution of the solar wind along its main-sequence lifetime and compute its thermal radio emission. To study the evolution of the solar wind, we use a sample of solar mass stars at different ages. All these stars have observationally reconstructed magnetic maps, which are incorporated in our 3D magnetohydrodynamic simulations of their winds. We show that angular-momentum loss and mass-loss rates decrease steadily on evolutionary time-scales, although they can vary in a magnetic cycle time-scale. Stellar winds are known to emit radiation in the form of thermal bremsstrahlung in the radio spectrum. To calculate the expected radio fluxes from these winds, we solve the radiative transfer equation numerically from first principles. We compute continuum spectra across the frequency range 100 MHz to 100 GHz and find maximum radio flux densities ranging from 0.05 to 2.2 ÎŒJy. At a frequency of 1 GHz and a normalized distance of d = 10 pc, the radio flux density follows 0.24 (Ω/Ωâ)0.9 (d/[10pc])-2ÎŒJy, where Ω is the rotation rate. This means that the best candidates for stellar wind observations in the radio regime are faster rotators within distances of 10 pc, such as Îș1 Ceti (0.73 ÎŒJy) and Ï1 Ori (2.2 ÎŒJy). These flux predictions provide a guide to observing solar-type stars across the frequency range 0.1-100 GHz in the future using the next generation of radio telescopes, such as ngVLA and Square Kilometre Array

Competition between decay and dissociation of core-excited OCS studied by X-ray scattering
We show the first evidence of dissociation during resonant inelastic soft
X-ray scattering. Carbon and oxygen K-shell and sulfur L-shell resonant and
non-resonant X-ray emission spectra were measured using monochromatic
synchrotron radiation for excitation and ionization. After sulfur, L2,3 ->
{\pi}*, {\sigma}* excitation, atomic lines are observed in the emission spectra
as a consequence of competition between de-excitation and dissociation. In
contrast the carbon and oxygen spectra show weaker line shape variations and no
atomic lines. The spectra are compared to results from ab initio calculations
and the discussion of the dissociation paths is based on calculated potential

Magnetic field and wind of Kappa Ceti: toward the planetary habitability of the young sun when life arose on earth
We report magnetic field measurements for Îș1 Cet, a proxy of the young Sun when life arose on Earth. We carry out an analysis of the magnetic properties determined from spectropolarimetric observations and reconstruct the
large-scale surface magnetic field to derive the magnetic environment, stellar winds, and particle flux permeating
the interplanetary medium around k1 Cet. Our results show a closer magnetosphere and mass-loss rate of M = 9.7 Ì 10-13 M yr-1, i.e., a factor of 50 times larger than the current solar wind mass-loss rate, resulting in a larger interaction via space weather disturbances between the stellar wind and a hypothetical young-Earth analogue, potentially affecting the planetâs habitability. Interaction of the wind from the young Sun with the planetary ancient magnetic field may have affected the young Earth and its life conditions

Output from VIP cells of the mammalian central clock regulates daily physiological rhythms
The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) circadian clock is critical for optimising daily cycles in mammalian physiology and behaviour. The roles of the various SCN cell types in communicating timing information to downstream physiological systems remain incompletely understood, however. In particular, while vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) signalling is essential for SCN function and whole animal circadian rhythmicity, the specific contributions of VIP cell output to physiological control remains uncertain. Here we reveal a key role for SCN VIP cells in central clock output. Using multielectrode recording and optogenetic manipulations, we show that VIP neurons provide coordinated daily waves of GABAergic input to target cells across the paraventricular hypothalamus and ventral thalamus, supressing their activity during the mid to late day. Using chemogenetic manipulation, we further demonstrate specific roles for this circuitry in the daily control of heart rate and corticosterone secretion, collectively establishing SCN VIP cells as influential regulators of physiological timing
The connection between stellar activity cycles and magnetic field topology
ZeemanâDoppler imaging (ZDI) has successfully mapped the large-scale magnetic fields of stars over a large range of spectral types, rotation periods and ages. When observed over multiple epochs, some stars show polarity reversals in their global magnetic fields. On the Sun, polarity reversals are a feature of its activity cycle. In this paper, we examine the magnetic properties of stars with existing chromospherically determined cycle periods. Previous authors have suggested that cycle periods lie on multiple branches, either in the cycle periodâRossby number plane or the cycle periodârotation period plane. We find some evidence that stars along the active branch show significant average toroidal fields that exhibit large temporal variations while stars exclusively on the inactive branch remain dominantly poloidal throughout their entire cycle. This lends credence to the idea that different shear layers are in operation along each branch. There is also evidence that the short magnetic polarity switches observed on some stars are characteristic of the inactive branch while the longer chromospherically determined periods are characteristic of the active branch. This may explain the discrepancy between the magnetic and chromospheric cycle periods found on some stars. These results represent a first attempt at linking global magnetic field properties obtained from ZDI and activity cycles.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Urban Airborne Lead: X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy Establishes Soil as Dominant Source
BACKGROUND: Despite the dramatic decrease in airborne lead over the past three decades, there are calls for regulatory limits on this potent pediatric neurotoxin lower even than the new (2008) US Environmental Protection Agency standard. To achieve further decreases in airborne lead, what sources would need to be decreased and what costs would ensue? Our aim was to identify and, if possible, quantify the major species (compounds) of lead in recent ambient airborne particulate matter collected in El Paso, TX, USA. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We used synchrotron-based XAFS (x-ray absorption fine structure) to identify and quantify the major Pb species. XAFS provides molecular-level structural information about a specific element in a bulk sample. Pb-humate is the dominant form of lead in contemporary El Paso air. Pb-humate is a stable, sorbed complex produced exclusively in the humus fraction of Pb-contaminated soils; it also is the major lead species in El Paso soils. Thus such soil must be the dominant source, and its resuspension into the air, the transfer process, providing lead particles to the local air. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Current industrial and commercial activity apparently is not a major source of airborne lead in El Paso, and presumably other locales that have eliminated such traditional sources as leaded gasoline. Instead, local contaminated soil, legacy of earlier anthropogenic Pb releases, serves as a long-term reservoir that gradually leaks particulate lead to the atmosphere. Given the difficulty and expense of large-scale soil remediation or removal, fugitive soil likely constrains a lower limit for airborne lead levels in many urban settings
Optically written waveguide in an atomic vapor
We present the first demonstration of an optically written waveguide in an atomic vapor. By strongly pumping one rubidium transition, we are able to waveguide a weak probe beam at a different rubidium transition. These effects can be understood with reference to a model of the refractive index for a V system. [S0031-9007(99)08495-1]
Automating unobtrusive personalized services in ambient media environments

These media objects should interact with users in a way that is not disturbing for them. To address this issue, this work presents a design and automation strategy for augmenting the world around us with personalized ambient media services that behave in a considerate manner.
