Altres ajuts: acords transformatius de la UABA review of the main ideas related to the capture and valorization of CO by using electrochemical processes is presented. The advantages of using an electrode-controlled potential that provides the possibility of reducing CO to non-fossil carbon-based fuels, or of using this atmospheric pollutant in organic synthesis processes that rely on electrocarboxylation steps are outlined. The implications of a reduction in atmospheric CO emissions in the global climate change emergency, while at the same time finding alternative and clean ways of producing valuable fuels and chemicals, are emphasized. Particular attention is paid to the powerful role that ionic liquids can play as ideal solvents and electrolytes in such electrochemical reactions. A general description of the advantages that these liquids have for the solubilization and the support of the electrochemical reduction of CO is presented

K1,3K_{1,3}-covering red and blue points in the plane

We say that a finite set of red and blue points in the plane in general position can be K1,3K_{1,3}-covered if the set can be partitioned into subsets of size 44, with 33 points of one color and 11 point of the other color, in such a way that, if at each subset the fourth point is connected by straight-line segments to the same-colored points, then the resulting set of all segments has no crossings. We consider the following problem: Given a set RR of rr red points and a set BB of bb blue points in the plane in general position, how many points of RBR\cup B can be K1,3K_{1,3}-covered? and we prove the following results: (1) If r=3g+hr=3g+h and b=3h+gb=3h+g, for some non-negative integers gg and hh, then there are point sets RBR\cup B, like {1,3}\{1,3\}-equitable sets (i.e., r=3br=3b or b=3rb=3r) and linearly separable sets, that can be K1,3K_{1,3}-covered. (2) If r=3g+hr=3g+h, b=3h+gb=3h+g and the points in RBR\cup B are in convex position, then at least r+b4r+b-4 points can be K1,3K_{1,3}-covered, and this bound is tight. (3) There are arbitrarily large point sets RBR\cup B in general position, with r=b+1r=b+1, such that at most r+b5r+b-5 points can be K1,3K_{1,3}-covered. (4) If br3bb\le r\le 3b, then at least 89(r+b8)\frac{8}{9}(r+b-8) points of RBR\cup B can be K1,3K_{1,3}-covered. For r>3br>3b, there are too many red points and at least r3br-3b of them will remain uncovered in any K1,3K_{1,3}-covering. Furthermore, in all the cases we provide efficient algorithms to compute the corresponding coverings.Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures, 1 tabl

Optimization of nitrogen feeding strategies for improving polyhydroxybutyrate production from biogas by Methylocystis parvus OBBP in a stirred tank reactor

Producción CientíficaThe design of efficient cultivation strategies to produce bioplastics from biogas is crucial for the implementation of this biorefinery process. In this work, biogas-based polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) production and CH4 biodegradation performance was investigated for the first time in a stirred tank bioreactor inoculated with Methylocystis parvus OBBP. Decreasing nitrogen loading rates in continuous mode and alternating feast:famine regimes of 24 h-cycles, and alternating feast:famine regimes of 24 h:24 h and 24 h:48 h were tested. Continuous N feeding did not support an effective PHB production despite the occurrence of nitrogen limiting conditions. Feast-famine cycles of 24 h:24 h (with 50% stoichiometric nitrogen supply) supported the maximum PHB production (20 g-PHB m−3 d−1) without compromising the CH4-elimination capacity (25 g m−3 h−1) of the system. Feast:famine ratios ≤1:2 entailed the deterioration of process performance at stoichiometric nitrogen inputs ≤60%.Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (grant BES-2016-077160)Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (project CTM2015-70442-R)Junta de Castilla y León (projects UIC 071 and CLU 2017–09

Among the different additives or capping ligands, biomolecules are an interesting family due to their potential biomedical applications such as drug delivery, bioimaging, biosensing, phototherapy, and antimicrobial activities. Here, we develop a seed-mediated strategy for synthesizing uniform Au nanostars with tuneable optical properties which involves adenosine monophosphate (AMP) as a capping ligand. The experimental data reveal the key role of AMP not just providing colloidal stability and directing the reduction of the gold precursor via complexation but also mediating the anisotropic growth of the Au seeds via its selective adsorption on the different crystalline facets of Au nanoparticles. These observations agree with theoretical simulations carried out using molecular dynamics and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Interestingly, the obtained Au nanostars showed high thermal stability as well as colloidal stability in polar organic solvents, which allowed their direct silica coating via the Stöber method. Importantly, we also explored the mimic enzymatic activity of the resulting gold nanostars and observed a superior catalytic activity compared with other gold nanoparticles reported in the literature.publishersversionpublishe

A study of the artistic corpus of red cave paintings in El Buxu cave (Cangas de Onís, Asturias, Spain)

    Get PDF
El Buxu cave, which is located in the village of Cardes (Cangas de Onís, Asturias), has been studied since the 1980s, with multiple excavations taking place inside the cave. This work has uncovered a complete artistic corpus, marking out several phases of occupation, with paintings dating to the first phases of the Upper Palaeolithic, Solutrean and Lower and Middle Magdalenian periods. This paper presents a new review of its rock art, documenting all of the red paintings inside the cave, most of which have never been published up until this point. The most notable inclusion is the new description of a zoomorphic figure painted in red, which has previously been interpreted as an aurochs, but whose features are in fact closer to those of a deer or reindeer. In addition, stratigraphic analysis of some of the paintings has revealed that they are overlapped by Solutrean and Magdalenian engravings and black paintings inside the cave. Elemental analysis was performed on series of red pigments and ochre samples, recovered from various strata using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. The resulting dataset was treated using Principal Component Analysis, providing a deeper understanding of the composition of the rock art in El Buxu cave, while uncovering potential correlations between the samples ac- cording to their elemental composition. After comparing additional evidences from other red cave paintings in the region with the red pictographs in the cave, along with the stratification of paint pigments and their relationship with the ochre samples in each stratum, it appears that the red paintings comprise the oldest group of pictures inside the cave and can be broadly dated to the pre-Magdalenian cultural period. Our special aknowledgment to the National University of Distance Education (UNED), for its funding for open-access publishin

Decreased glycogen synthase kinase-3 levels and activity contribute to Huntington's disease

    Get PDF
© The Author 2015. Huntington's disease (HD) is a hereditary neurodegenerative disorder characterized by brain atrophy particularly in striatum leading to personality changes, chorea and dementia. Glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) is a serine/threonine kinase in the crossroad of many signaling pathways that is highly pleiotropic as it phosphorylates more than hundred substrates including structural, metabolic, and signaling proteins. Increased GSK-3 activity is believed to contribute to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease and GSK-3 inhibitors have been postulated as therapeutic agents for neurodegeneration. Regarding HD, GSK-3 inhibitors have shown beneficial effects in cell and invertebrate animal models but no evident efficacy in mouse models. Intriguingly, those studies were performed without interrogating GSK-3 level and activity in HD brain. Herewe aim to explore the level and also the enzymatic activity of GSK-3 in the striatum and other less affected brain regions of HD patients and of the R6/1 mouse model to then elucidate the possible contribution of its alteration to HD pathogenesis by genetic manipulation in mice.We report a dramatic decrease in GSK-3 levels and activity in striatum and cortex of HD patients with similar results in the mouse model. Correction of the GSK-3 deficit inHDmice, by combining with transgenic mice with conditional GSK-3 expression, resulted in amelioration of their brain atrophy and behavioral motor and learning deficits. Thus, our results demonstrate that decreased brain GSK-3 contributes to HD neurological phenotype and open new therapeutic opportunities based on increasing GSK-3 activity or attenuating the harmful consequences of its decrease. This work was supported by Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Enfermedades Neurodegenerativas (CiberNed-Instituto de salud Carlos III) and by grants from Ministerio de Ciencia (MEC, MICINN, MINECO), Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid and Fundación Ramón Areces.
