Rupture of the quadriceps tendon is a common pathology in adults, but exceptionally rare in children. The case reported is that of a 9-year old boy with a 2-month history of pain in the left knee without any clear history of trauma. Magnetic Resonance Imaging study was carried out, leading to the diagnosis of partial tear of the left quadricipital tendon. The tendon was re-anchored at the upper pole of the patella, followed by rehabilitation. The patient recovered joint and muscular balance after the surgery. Rupture of the quadriceps tendon is exceptionally rare at pediatric ages. A thorough examination, both clinical as well as radiological, is of fundamental importance. Treatment is determined by the kind of rupture and associated clinical symptoms. We have carried out a bibliographical review of the literature in order to offer a better understanding of this pathology and its treatment

Performance Of The High Speed Rail In Spain In The Context Of The New Regulation Framework. Evidence From The Madrid-Seville Hsr Corridor

    Get PDF
The ambitious planned development of the high-speed rail (HSR) network in Spain requires the implementation of new sector regulations to fully achieve its objectives, namely to make the sector more competitive and to promote a more balanced and efficient transport system. For this purpose, the Spanish administration recently launched the new Rail Sector Act (39/2003), on a national regulatory framework. The planned liberalisation process foresees the end of the monopoly of the Spanish state operator RENFE, opening up passenger transport to new rail operators by 2010. On a European level, this new regulatory framework comes in line with EU’s concerns both on transport service performance and on infrastructure development. On the one hand, European regulations have focused in measures to guarantee quality of service, equal access and effective competition market rules. On the other, the relevance of the development of HSR projects in the Iberian peninsula is proved with their inclusion among the priority projects of the trans-European networks (TEN).Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies. We sought to analyse the incidence and features of injuries sustained by professional and non-professional Spanish Padel players. In total, 478 injuries were registered in 2016 from January 1st to December 31st. We collected data on the number of injuries, the most frequent injuries, their distribution, type, location, the moment at which these occurred and the cause of the injuries affecting the locomotor system. We found that the injury rate in this population was 2.75 injuries per 1000 hours of risk exposure. The most frequent injuries were those which were mild or with mechanisms of intrinsic injury, and most occurred towards the end any given game or practice. The lower limb was the most frequently injured body area, and the most injured tissue was the muscle-tendinous system. In turn, epicondylitis was the most common patholog

The present case study presents the speech therapy evaluation of a 17-year-old adolescent patient, adopted in an Eastern country, with borderline intellectual disability and sensory problems. After the initial evaluation, a specific lexical-syntactic language disorder was diagnosed, with comorbidity with evolutionary dyslexia and severe sensorial problems. Parallel to the diagnosis, it was postulated that the adolescent had foetal alcohol syndrome associated with prenatal alcohol exposure, both due to her clinical condition and suspicion from her adoption history. After a year of speech therapy intervention, the girl showed no improvement.

    Get PDF
Aim: To systematically compare sexual function between non-treated women with and without endometriosis. Methods: A systematic review was performed on PubMed/Medline, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases searching studies that analyzed sexual function (assessed with the 19-item Female Sexual Function Index [FSFI]), and dyspareunia, chronic pelvic pain and dysmenorrhea (assessed with a visual analogue scale [VAS]) in women with and with endometriosis. Results: In 4 studies, non-treated women with endometriosis presented a higher risk of female sexual dysfunction (mean total FSFI score = 26.55; OR = 2.38; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.12, 5.04). Although mean total FSFI scores were not significantly different between women with and without endometriosis (mean difference [MD] = -2.15; 95% CI -4.96, 0.67); all FSFI domain scores were significantly lower in women with endometriosis (n = 4 studies): desire (MD = -0.43; 95% CI -0.57, -0.19); arousal (MD = -0.66; 95% CI -1.15, -0.17); lubrication (MD = -0.41; 95% CI -0.79, -0.02); orgasm (MD = -0.40; 95% CI -0.73, -0.06); satisfaction (MD = -0.45; 95% CI -0.72, -0.18); and pain (MD = -1.03; 95% CI -1.34, -0.72). Women with endometriosis displayed differences (more severity) in terms of VAS scores (2 studies) for dyspareunia (MD = 1.88; 95% CI 0.38, 3.37) and chronic pelvic pain (MD = 2.92; 95% CI 1.26, 4.58); but not for dysmenorrhea. Conclusion: Non-treated women with endometriosis displayed altered sexual function as evidenced by lower scores in all FSFI domains, and severity of dyspareunia and chronic pelvic pain

    Get PDF
This work presents the results of an experimental study performed on the mechanical behavior of concrete manufactured with ceramic recycled aggregates (CRA), from precast ventilation ducts, that once made have been rejected by defective. The ultimate objective is to use these wastes to manufacture prestressed concrete joists used in building floors. The coarse fraction and the fine fraction have been considered. The work has been carried out in three phases: characterization of the material, characterization of concrete with CRA and manufacturing and testing of prestressed joists. With the results obtained it is determined the influence of the ceramic recycled aggregate on the properties analyzed. There are not enough studies about prestressed elements that include the replacement of the aggregate in the fine fraction. In view of the results obtained could both of fine and coarse fraction can be used in these applications
