    Revisiting diagenesis on the Ontong-Java plateau: Evidence for authigenic crust precipitation in Globorotalia tumida

    The calcite tests of foraminifera lie in marine sediments for thousands to millions of years, before being analysed to generate trace element and isotope palaeoproxy records. These sediments constitute a distinct physio-chemical environment from the conditions in which the tests formed. Storage in sediments can modify the trace element and isotopic content of foraminiferal calcite through diagenetic alteration, which has the potential to confound their palaeoceanographic interpretation. A previous study of G. tumida from the Ontong Java Plateau, western equatorial Pacific, found that preferential dissolution of higher-Mg chamber calcite, and the preservation of a low-Mg crust on the tests significantly reduced whole-test Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca [Brown and Elderfield, 1996]. Here, we revisit these specimens with a combination of synchrotron X-ray computed tomography (sXCT) and electron probe micro-analyses (EPMA) to re-evaluate the nature of their diagenetic alteration. The dissolution of higher-Mg calcite with depth was directly observed in the sXCT data, confirming the inference of the previous study. The sXCT data further reveal a thickening of the chemically and structurally distinct calcite crust with depth. We propose that these crusts have a diagenetic origin, driven by the simultaneous dissolution of high-Mg chamber calcite and precipitation of low-Mg crust from the resulting modified pore-water solution. While the breadth of the study is limited by the nature of the techniques, the observation of both dissolution and re-precipitation of foraminiferal calcite serves to demonstrate the action of two simultaneous diagenetic alteration processes, with significant impacts on the resulting palaeoproxy signals.The authors would like to acknowledge Aleksey Sadekov, Gerald Langer, India Weidle, Alberto de Fanis, Andrew Bodey, Joan Vila-Comamala and Ulrich Wagner for their help with the project.     High-resolution grids of daily air temperature for Peru - the new PISCOt v1.2 dataset

    Gridded high-resolution climate datasets are increasingly important for a wide range of modelling applications. Here we present PISCOt (v1.2), a novel high spatial resolution (0.01°) dataset of daily air temperature for entire Peru (1981–2020). The dataset development involves four main steps: (i) quality control; (ii) gap-filling; (iii) homogenisation of weather stations, and (iv) spatial interpolation using additional data, a revised calculation sequence and an enhanced version control. This improved methodological framework enables capturing complex spatial variability of maximum and minimum air temperature at a more accurate scale compared to other existing datasets (e.g. PISCOt v1.1, ERA5-Land, TerraClimate, CHIRTS). PISCOt performs well with mean absolute errors of 1.4 °C and 1.2 °C for maximum and minimum air temperature, respectively. For the first time, PISCOt v1.2 adequately captures complex climatology at high spatiotemporal resolution and therefore provides a substantial improvement for numerous applications at local-regional level. This is particularly useful in view of data scarcity and urgently needed model-based decision making for climate change, water balance and ecosystem assessment studies in Peru

    COVID-19 symptoms at hospital admission vary with age and sex: results from the ISARIC prospective multinational observational study

    Background: The ISARIC prospective multinational observational study is the largest cohort of hospitalized patients with COVID-19. We present relationships of age, sex, and nationality to presenting symptoms. Methods: International, prospective observational study of 60 109 hospitalized symptomatic patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 recruited from 43 countries between 30 January and 3 August 2020. Logistic regression was performed to evaluate relationships of age and sex to published COVID-19 case definitions and the most commonly reported symptoms. Results: ‘Typical’ symptoms of fever (69%), cough (68%) and shortness of breath (66%) were the most commonly reported. 92% of patients experienced at least one of these. Prevalence of typical symptoms was greatest in 30- to 60-year-olds (respectively 80, 79, 69%; at least one 95%). They were reported less frequently in children (≀ 18 years: 69, 48, 23; 85%), older adults (≄ 70 years: 61, 62, 65; 90%), and women (66, 66, 64; 90%; vs. men 71, 70, 67; 93%, each P < 0.001). The most common atypical presentations under 60 years of age were nausea and vomiting and abdominal pain, and over 60 years was confusion. Regression models showed significant differences in symptoms with sex, age and country. Interpretation: This international collaboration has allowed us to report reliable symptom data from the largest cohort of patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19. Adults over 60 and children admitted to hospital with COVID-19 are less likely to present with typical symptoms. Nausea and vomiting are common atypical presentations under 30 years. Confusion is a frequent atypical presentation of COVID-19 in adults over 60 years. Women are less likely to experience typical symptoms than men

    Regionalization of rainfall over the Peruvian Pacific slope and coast

    Documenting the heterogeneity of rainfall regimes is a prerequisite for water resources management, mitigation of risks associated to extremes weather events and for impact studies. In this paper, we present a method for regionalization of rainfall over the Peruvian Pacific slope and coast, which is the main economic zone of the country and concentrates almost 50% of the population. Our approach is based on a two-step process based on k-means clustering followed by the regional vector method (RVM) applied to a network of 145 rainfall stations covering the period 1964–2011. The advantage of combining cluster analysis and RVM is demonstrated compared with just applying each of these methods. Nine homogeneous regions are identified that depict the salient features of the rainfall variability over the study area. A detailed characterization of the rainfall regime in each of the identified regions is presented in response to climate variability at seasonal and interannual timescale. They are shown to grasp the main modes of influence of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), that is, increased rainfall over downstream regions in northern Peru during extreme El Niño events and decreased rainfall over upstream regions along the Pacific slope during central Pacific El Niño events. Overall our study points to the value of our two-step regionalization procedure for climate impact studies

    Se estudiĂł la dieta del puma (Puma concolor)en los anos 1988 y 2004 en los faldeos de los volcanes Mocho y Choshuenco, pluviselva valdiviana, sur de Chile, a travĂ©s de la identificaciĂłn de Ă­temes-presas en sus heces y la bĂșsqueda en terreno de carcasas de jabalĂ­ europeo (Sus scrofa).Se registra por primera vez al jabalĂ­ europeo entre los Ă­temes-presas del puma en Chile. El puma depredĂł predominantemente sobre juveniles y los porcentajes de consumo variaron entre un 17-37 % dependiendo del mĂ©todo empleado para analizar el contenido de presas presentes en sus heces.<br>The diet of the American puma (Puma concolor)was studied in 1988 and 2004 in the foothills of the volcanoes Mocho and Choshuenco, Valdivian rainforest, southern Chile, through the identification of prey-items in their feces and field surveys of European wild boar (Sus scrofa)carcasses. We reported for the first time the invader European wild boar as a puma's prey in Chile.     ANDES: The first system for flash flood monitoring and forecasting in Peru

    Hydrological hazards related to flash floods (FF) in Peru have caused many economic and human life losses in recent years. In this context, developing complete early warning systems against FF is necessary to cope impacts. For this purpose, hydrological and hydraulic models coupled to numerical weather models (NWM) that provide forecasts are generally used. In this sense, the National Meteorological and Hydrological Service of Peru (SENAMHI) has launched the ANDES initiative (Operational Forecasting System for Flash Floods of SENAMHI in English) to support FF events
