Patterns of Early Urbanisation in Swat: A Reassessment of the Data from the Recent Excavations at Barikot
The study presents a set of new data, all coming from recent excavations in the ancient urban site
of Barikot (Swat, Pakistan), which may allow a new look at phenomena hitherto considered certain, such as
the delay of protohistoric phases, the so-called marginalization of Swat, and the beginning of urban phases
seen in association with the Indo-Greek colonial power. In our reconstruction, the protohistoric phases end
around 800 BCE, while, after a phase of negative interface, i.e. of significant abandonment, towards the
middle of the first millennium, there are conditions for the establishment of an urban settlement in Barikot.
At this stage, very significantly, for the first time, the local ceramic tradition is replaced by Gangetic and
Iranian forms, which are interpreted as markers of a growing process of trans-regional trade relations. In
this ongoing process of historical reconstruction, the silence of the archaeological component towards
the so-called Mauryan phase, of which field archaeology has not yet managed to provide a clear picture,
remains strident
Restauro conservativo e mobilizzazione sociale in siti archeologici della valle dello Swat (Pakistan)
The 60-year presence of the Italian Archaeological Mission in Swat, has built a substantial continuity among the skilled workers from one generation to the next resulting in a working experience that is unique in this field. This experience was transformed in 2011-2014 into a model of intervention, the ACT project. In view of this experience, a specific approach in conservative restoration was designed with special reference to the materials and skills of the local workers. The need was felt to come up with a low cost type of intervention based on clear-cut methodological concepts that would allow government agencies in future to plan maintenance and restoration cycles also on a large scale, that is with an order of magnitude that the administration of cultural heritage has to cope with in Swat and in Pakistan. This model of intervention is pictured through two test cases, i.e. the Main Stupa at the site of Saidu Sharif I, and the colossal rock-carving of Jahanabad.

The question of Christian presence in mainland South Asia, although historically certain, is not archaeologically attested for the period before the Portuguese contact phase. Elsewhere the archaeological evidence is clear: in the Iranian and Central Asian area, in the Karakoram‑Himalaya, but also along the Indian Ocean routes.
The so‑called ‘St. Thomas crosses’, a traditional key point for the issue, can hardly be considered as supporting evidence for an early presence of Christian communities at least in South India. Research on these phases will have to move in other directions in the future, both by exploring the rich regional epigraphic corpus and by planning archaeological fieldwork
The value of transbronchial lung biopsy using jumbo forceps via rigid bronchoscope in diffuse lung disease.
Background. Transbronchial lung biopsy (TBLB) is a valuable procedure used to obtain a parenchymal specimen in the evaluation of diffuse lung infiltrates. Large forceps are expected to result in larger specimens and improve diagnostic yield. Aim. The objective of this study was to evaluate diagnostic yield of TBLB using large modified flexible gastroenterological forceps ("Jumbo forceps") compared with 'normal' flexible forceps via rigid bronchoscopy in patients with diffuse parenchymal lung disease (DPLD). Methods. The study was a prospective analysis of 95 patients who underwent fluoroscopy guided TBLB over a two year period. Patients with a lung mass or solitary lung nodule undergoing TBLB were excluded. The larger and small forceps were used in a random sequence to avoid a reduction in diagnostic yield of the second series of biopsies related to possible bleeding by first series of biopsies. To minimize the consequence of haemorrhage, we performed every rigid bronchoscopy, placing a non inflated Fogarty balloon and a rigid aspirator (diameter 4 mm) in lobar bronchus near the biopsy segment. The Fogarty balloon has been inflated in case of bleeding. After the bleeding was controlled we continued to operate up to the biopsy segment. Results. Diagnostic yield of TBLB using Jumbo forceps was significantly higher than using normal flexible forceps via rigid bronchoscopy in patients with DPLD (p=0.001). In 74 out of 95 patients (78%) the diagnosis was placed with Jumbo forcep while the smaller forcep was diagnostic in 62 out of 95 patients (65%). Large forceps obtained significantly more tissue than the small forceps; the biopsy specimen taken with normal forcep measured in average 1.4 x 1.0 mm and the larger biopsy taken with jumbo forcep measured in average 2.5 x 1.9 mm (p < 0.005). Conclusion. The use of large biopsy forceps to perform TBLB via rigid bronchoscope can significantly increase diagnostic yield in the pathological diagnosis of diffuse infiltrative lung disease
A Journey to the West: The Ancient Dispersal of Rice Out of East Asia.
Funder: Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human HistoryRice is one of the most culturally valued and widely grown crops in the world today, and extensive research over the past decade has clarified much of the narrative of its domestication and early spread across East and South Asia. However, the timing and routes of its dispersal into West Asia and Europe, through which rice eventually became an important ingredient in global cuisines, has remained less clear. In this article, we discuss the piecemeal, but growing, archaeobotanical data for rice in West Asia. We also integrate written sources, linguistic data, and ethnohistoric analogies, in order to better understand the adoption of rice outside its regions of origin. The human-mediated westward spread of rice proceeded gradually, while its social standing and culinary uses repeatedly changing over time and place. Rice was present in West Asia and Europe by the tail end of the first millennium BC, but did not become a significant crop in West Asia until the past few centuries. Complementary historical, linguistic, and archaeobotanical data illustrate two separate and roughly contemporaneous routes of westward dispersal, one along the South Asian coast and the other through Silk Road trade. By better understanding the adoption of this water-demanding crop in the arid regions of West Asia, we explore an important chapter in human adaptation and agricultural decision making
Erythropoietin (EPO) haplotype associated with all-cause mortality in a cohort of Italian patients with Type-2 Diabetes
Type-2 Diabetes (T2D), diabetic complications, and their clinical risk factors harbor a substantial genetic component but the genetic factors contributing to overall diabetes mortality remain unknown. Here, we examined the association between genetic variants at 21 T2D-susceptibility loci and all-cause mortality in an elderly cohort of 542 Italian diabetic patients who were followed for an average of 12.08 years. Univariate Cox regression analyses detected age, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c), diabetes duration, retinopathy, nephropathy, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and anaemia as predictors of all-cause mortality. When Cox proportional hazards multivariate models adjusted for these factors were run, three erythropoietin (EPO) genetic variants in linkage disequilibrium (LD) with each other (rs1617640-T/G, rs507392-T/C and rs551238-A/C) were significantly (False Discovery Rate < 0.1) associated with mortality. Haplotype multivariate analysis revealed that patients carrying the G-C-C haplotype have an increased probability of survival, while an opposite effect was observed among subjects carrying the T-T-A haplotype. Our findings provide evidence that the EPO gene is an independent predictor of mortality in patients with T2D. Thus, understanding the mechanisms by which the genetic variability of EPO affects the mortality of T2D patients may provide potential targets for therapeutic interventions to improve the survival of these patients
Identification of backgrounds in the EDELWEISS-I dark matter search experiment
This paper presents our interpretation and understanding of the different
backgrounds in the EDELWEISS-I data sets. We analyze in detail the several
populations observed, which include gammas, alphas, neutrons, thermal sensor
events and surface events, and try to combine all data sets to provide a
coherent picture of the nature and localisation of the background sources. In
light of this interpretation, we draw conclusions regarding the background
suppression scheme for the EDELWEISS-II phase
Measurement of the response of heat-and-ionization germanium detectors to nuclear recoils
The heat quenching factor Q' (the ratio of the heat signals produced by
nuclear and electron recoils of equal energy) of the heat-and-ionization
germanium bolometers used by the EDELWEISS collaboration has been measured. It
is explained how this factor affects the energy scale and the effective
quenching factor observed in calibrations with neutron sources. This effective
quenching effect is found to be equal to Q/Q', where Q is the quenching factor
of the ionization yield. To measure Q', a precise EDELWEISS measurement of Q/Q'
is combined with values of Q obtained from a review of all available
measurements of this quantity in tagged neutron beam experiments. The
systematic uncertainties associated with this method to evaluate Q' are
discussed in detail. For recoil energies between 20 and 100 keV, the resulting
heat quenching factor is Q' = 0.91+-0.03+-0.04, where the two errors are the
contributions from the Q and Q/Q' measurements, respectively. The present
compilation of Q values and evaluation of Q' represent one of the most precise
determinations of the absolute energy scale for any detector used in direct

Phylogenetic Position of a Copper Age Sheep (Ovis aries) Mitochondrial DNA
BACKGROUND: Sheep (Ovis aries) were domesticated in the Fertile Crescent region about 9,000-8,000 years ago. Currently, few mitochondrial (mt) DNA studies are available on archaeological sheep. In particular, no data on archaeological European sheep are available. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here we describe the first portion of mtDNA sequence of a Copper Age European sheep. DNA was extracted from hair shafts which were part of the clothes of the so-called Tyrolean Iceman or Ötzi (5,350-5,100 years before present). Mitochondrial DNA (a total of 2,429 base pairs, encompassing a portion of the control region, tRNA(Phe), a portion of the 12S rRNA gene, and the whole cytochrome B gene) was sequenced using a mixed sequencing procedure based on PCR amplification and 454 sequencing of pooled amplification products. We have compared the sequence with the corresponding sequence of 334 extant lineages. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: A phylogenetic network based on a new cladistic notation for the mitochondrial diversity of domestic sheep shows that the Ötzi's sheep falls within haplogroup B, thus demonstrating that sheep belonging to this haplogroup were already present in the Alps more than 5,000 years ago. On the other hand, the lineage of the Ötzi's sheep is defined by two transitions (16147, and 16440) which, assembled together, define a motif that has not yet been identified in modern sheep populations
