    Lifetimes of Confined Acoustic Phonons in Ultra-Thin Silicon Membranes

    We study the relaxation of coherent acoustic phonon modes with frequencies up to 500 GHz in ultra-thin free-standing silicon membranes. Using an ultrafast pump-probe technique of asynchronous optical sampling, we observe that the decay time of the first-order dilatational mode decreases significantly from \sim 4.7 ns to 5 ps with decreasing membrane thickness from \sim 194 to 8 nm. The experimental results are compared with theories considering both intrinsic phonon-phonon interactions and extrinsic surface roughness scattering including a wavelength-dependent specularity. Our results provide insight to understand some of the limits of nanomechanical resonators and thermal transport in nanostructures

    Shape-dependence of near-field heat transfer between a spheroidal nanoparticle and a flat surface

    We study the radiative heat transfer between a spheroidal metallic nanoparticle and a planar metallic sample for near- and far-field distances. In particular, we investigate the shape dependence of the heat transfer in the near-field regime. In comparison with spherical particles, the heat transfer typically varies by factors between 1/2 and 2 when the particle is deformed such that its volume is kept constant. These estimates help to quantify the deviation of the actual heat transfer recorded by a near-field scanning thermal microscope from the value provided by a dipole model which assumes a perfectly spherical sensor

    Influence of contact angle on slow evaporation in two-dimensional porous media

    We study numerically the influence of contact angle on slow evaporation in two-dimensional model porous media. For sufficiently low contact angles, the drying pattern is fractal and can be predicted by a simple model combining the invasion percolation model with the computation of the diffusive transport in the gas phase. The overall drying time is minimum in this regime and is independent of contact angle over a large range of contact angles up to the beginning of a transition zone. As the contact angle increases in the transition region, the cooperative smoothing mechanisms of the interface become important and the width of the liquid gas interface fingers that form during the evaporation process increases. The mean overall drying time increases in the transition region up to an upper bound which is reached at a critical contact angle \Theta_c. The increase in the drying time in the transition region is explained in relation with the diffusional screening phenomenon associated with the Laplace equation governing the vapor transport in the gas phase. Above \Theta_c the drying pattern is character- ized by a flat traveling front and the mean overall drying time becomes independent of the contact angle. Drying time fluctuations are studied and are found to be important below \Theta_c, i.e., when the pattern is fractal. The fluctuations are of the same order of magnitude regardless of the value of contact angle in this range. The fluctuations are found to die out abruptly at \Theta_c as the liquid gas interface becomes a flat front

    AbstractThis paper first focuses on the environmental benefits of the CCS system applied to a bio-ethanol distillery before estimating its feasibility under geological and economic constraints.First, the calculation of CO2 balance in this application shows that the introduction of CO2 capture and sto rage in biomass energy systems (B-CCS) can si gnificantly increase the CO2 abat ement potential of the system and even leads to negative carbon emissions. Besides, a preliminary geological investigation reveals that the studied area has a good storage potential although the presence of major faults, while the low capture costs of CO2 from biomass fermentation emphasize the economic potential o f such a solution

    Quantitative 3w-scanning thermal microscopy : Modelling the AC/DC coupling and the sample heat conduction

    A way to increase the Scanning Thermal Microscope (SThM) sensitivity in the harmonic 3w mode is to heat the probe with an AC current sufficiently high to generate a coupling between the AC and the DC signals. We detail in this paper how to properly take into account this coupling with a Wollaston-probe SThM. We also show how to link correctly the thermal conductivity to the thermal conductance measured by the SThM

We aim at proving an eventual sub-micrometric resolution of this metrology when using a wollaston wire probe of micrometric size. A dedicated CMOS device was designed with arrays of lines 0.35mm in size with 0.8 mm and 10mm periods. Integrated Circuits with or without a passivition layer were tested. To enhance sensitivity, the IC heat source was excited with an AC current. We show that the passivation layer spreads heat so that the lines are not distinguishable. Removing this layer allows us to distinguish the lines in the case of the 10mm period

    Immunogenicity and safety of yellow fever vaccination for 102 HIV-infected patients

    BACKGROUND: Yellow fever vaccine (17DV) has been investigated incompletely in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients, and adequate immunogenicity and safety are of concern in this population. METHODS: In the Swiss HIV Cohort Study, we identified 102 patients who received 17DV while they were HIV infected. We analyzed neutralization titers (NTs) after 17DV administration using the plaque reduction neutralization test. NTs of 1:>or=10 were defined as reactive, and those of 1:<10 were defined as nonreactive, which was considered to be nonprotective. The results were compared with data for HIV-uninfected individuals. Serious adverse events were defined as hospitalization or death within 6 weeks after receipt of 17DV. RESULTS: At the time of 17DV administration, the median CD4 cell count was 537 cells/mm(3) (range, 11-1730 cells/mm(3)), and the HIV RNA level was undetectable in 41 of 102 HIV-infected patients. During the first year after vaccination, fewer HIV-infected patients (65 [83%] of 78; P = .01) than HIV-uninfected patients revealed reactive NTs, and their NTs were significantly lower (P < .001) than in HIV-uninfected individuals. Eleven patients with initially reactive NTs lost these reactive NTs <or= 5 years after vaccination. Higher NTs during the first year after vaccination were associated with undetectable HIV RNA levels, increasing CD4 cell count, and female sex. We found no serious adverse events after 17DV administration among HIV-infected patients. CONCLUSION: Compared with HIV-uninfected individuals, HIV-infected patients respond to 17DV with lower reactive NTs, more often demonstrate nonprotective NTs, and may experience a more rapid decline in NTs during follow-up. Vaccination with 17DV appears to be safe in HIV-infected individuals who have high CD4 cell counts, although rate of serious adverse events of up to 3% cannot be exclude

    Candida arteritis in patients who have not received organ transplants: case report and review of the literature.

    Fungal arteritis is a rare entity, associated with significant morbidity and mortality, that typically involves graft arteries in solid organ transplant recipients. Here, we report the first case of Candida carotid arteritis and review 22 other cases of Candida arteritis reported since 1966 in patients who have not received transplants. Most patients had serious underlying conditions. All cases were anatomically characterized by pseudoaneurysm formation. Patients presented with fever (n=7), local pain (n=13), and an expanding pulsatile mass (n=4), with subsequent rupture and hemorrhage (n=7). Evidence of Candida colonization or infection was present in 15 patients before arteritis occurred. Treatment typically included a combined surgical and antifungal approach. The outcome was favorable in 11 patients, but follow-up was limited. A high index of suspicion, early diagnosis, and prompt antifungal and surgical treatment seem crucial to efforts to avoid life-threatening arterial rupture and hemorrhage

    Multiwavelength observation of a new black hole candidate: EXS 1737.9-2952

    We report a multiwavelength analysis of an unusual high-energy transient: EXS 1737.9-2952. Due to the features this source exhibited in the hard X-ray domain similar to another source in the Galactic center region (1E1740.9 - 2952), and in order to study the molecular gas toward this X-ray source, we performed an observation of the EXS region in 1993 August, using the Swedish-ESO Submillimeter Telescope (SEST) located in La Silla (Chilean Andes). We observed a cloud, at the "forbidden" velocity of 135 km s-1, using 12CO (1-0) transitions, giving a maximum column density of 8 &#215; 1021 cm-2. In 1994 we conducted other observations to search for higher density regions inside the cloud, using HCO+ and CS lines, but they were unsuccessful: we concluded that the cloud could be associated with the X-ray source and its mean density is of the order of &#8776;103 cm-3. In 1994 April, we performed a set of observations of the field containing EXS, at 20 cm and 6 cm, using the VLA in its A configuration, and found four possible radio candidates for an association with the EXS X-ray source, one of them (source 3) being extended, exhibiting a head-tail morphology, and a having a thermal spectrum with a spectral index &#8776;-0.7. We reproduced our observation in 1994 November and December, using the C configuration at 6 cm, in order to investigate on possible variability and extension of these sources and found a marginal indication in the 20 cm image that source 3 may have a weak second component displaced about 15". Nevertheless, this indication is too faint to associate this source definitely with EXS since no significant variation was detected. In addition, during the 1994 November-December observation, two more extended sources were detected but their association with EXS is unlikely. We also analyzed the Einstein/IPC image of the 5 &#963; EXS error box which does not exhibit, at the time of the observation, any significant low-energy X-ray counterpart to EXS. A nearby pulsar PSR 1737-30 in the ROSAT catalog is outside this error box. Finally, IRAS maps of the EXS region do not show any IR contribution at the location of the radio sources. We conclude that (1) EXS 1737.9-2952 is a high-energy transient, (2) a persistent counterpart at other wavelengths is not demonstrated, and (3) EXS, when flaring, as well as other GC gamma-ray sources, could possibly contribute to the 511 keV bulge emission
