Here we combine a model of the galaxy-halo connection with newly derived observational selection functions based on searches for satellites in photometric surveys over nearly the entire high Galactic latitude sky. In particular, we use cosmological zoom-in simulations of MW-like halos that include realistic Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) analogs to fit the position-dependent MW satellite luminosity function. We report decisive evidence for the statistical impact of the LMC on the MW satellite population due to an estimated 6 ± 2 observed LMC-associated satellites, consistent with the number of LMC satellites inferred from Gaia proper-motion measurements, confirming the predictions of cold dark matter models for the existence of satellites within satellite halos. Moreover, we infer that the LMC fell into the MW within the last 2 Gyr at high confidence. Based on our detailed full-sky modeling, we find that the faintest observed satellites inhabit halos with peak virial masses below 3.2× 108 M· at 95% confidence, and we place the first robust constraints on the fraction of halos that host galaxies in this regime. We predict that the faintest detectable satellites occupy halos with peak virial masses above 106 M·, highlighting the potential for powerful galaxy formation and dark matter constraints from future dwarf galaxy searchesThe DES data management system is supported by the National Science Foundation under grant Nos.     Prevalence of sleep-related breathing disorders in children with malocclusion

    The paediatric population has a high incidence of sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBD). A notable risk factor is the presence of craniofacial abnormalities. The objective of the study was therefore to survey the prevalence of SRBD in patients presenting for interceptive treatment. Prospective study with a sample of 249 healthy patients. The ?Paediatric Sleep Questionnaire? and ?Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children? were completed by the children?s parents and the results were evaluated. All patients had their medical records reviewed and underwent orthodontic diagnosis by oral examination, as well as dental cast and cephalometric analysis. Finally, we compared the results of the pre- and post-treatment questionnaires of 50 patients in the sample. Based on the results of the questionnaires, 22.8% of the study sample had SRBD. No statistically significant correlation was found between SRBD and the anthropometric characteristics and occlusal variables assessed. According to the cast analysis, patients with SRBD had a smaller maxillary width (p<0.003), and according to the cephalometric study, less overbite (p<0.003). Furthermore, the prevalence of SRBD was higher among patients with a history of adenotonsillectomy (p<0.02). Comparison of the results of pre- and post-treatment questionnaires revealed significant differences after orthodontic treatment (p<0.0005). It is necessary to identify the presence of SRBD in orthodontic patients given its high prevalence. Patients with SRBD have a smaller maxillary width and less overbite

    AmrZ is a major determinant of c-di-GMP levels in Pseudomonas fluorescens F113

    The transcriptional regulator AmrZ is a global regulatory protein conserved within the pseudomonads. AmrZ can act both as a positive and a negative regulator of gene expression, controlling many genes implicated in environmental adaption. Regulated traits include motility, iron homeostasis, exopolysaccharides production and the ability to form biofilms. In Pseudomonas fluorescens F113, an amrZ mutant presents a pleiotropic phenotype, showing increased swimming motility, decreased biofilm formation and very limited ability for competitive colonization of rhizosphere, its natural habitat. It also shows different colony morphology and binding of the dye Congo Red. The amrZ mutant presents severely reduced levels of the messenger molecule cyclic-di-GMP (c-di-GMP), which is consistent with the motility and biofilm formation phenotypes. Most of the genes encoding proteins with diguanylate cyclase (DGCs) or phosphodiesterase (PDEs) domains, implicated in c-di-GMP turnover in this bacterium, appear to be regulated by AmrZ. Phenotypic analysis of eight mutants in genes shown to be directly regulated by AmrZ and encoding c-di-GMP related enzymes, showed that seven of them were altered in motility and/or biofilm formation. The results presented here show that in P. fluorescens, AmrZ determines c-di-GMP levels through the regulation of a complex network of genes encoding DGCs and PDEs

    Advancec characterization of multicaloric materials in pulsed magnetic fields.

    The multicaloric effect is described by a temperature or entropy change of a material triggered by external stimuli applied or removed simultaneously or sequentially. The prerequisite for this is a material exhibiting multiple ferroic states. However, direct measurements of the effect are rarely reported. Now, for this reason, we built a measurement device allowing to determine the adiabatic temperature change in pulsed magnetic fields and, simultaneously, under the influence of a uniaxial load. We selected the all--metal Heusler alloy Ni-Mn-Ti-Co for our first test because of its enhanced mechanical properties and enormous magneto- and elastocaloric effects. Ni-Mn-Ti-Co was exposed to pulsed magnetic fields up to 10 T and uniaxial stresses up to 80 MPa, and the corresponding adiabatic temperature changes were measured. With our new experimental tool, we are able to better understand multicaloric materials and determine their cross-coupling responses to different stimuli

    Process modeling and control applied to real-time monitoring of distillation processes by near-infrared spectroscopy

    A distillation device that acquires continuous and synchronized measurements of temperature, percentage of distilled fraction and NIR spectra has been designed for real-time monitoring of distillation processes. As a process model, synthetic commercial gasoline batches produced in Brazil, which contain mixtures of pure gasoline blended with ethanol have been analyzed. The information provided by this device, i.e., distillation curves and NIR spectra, has served as initial information for the proposal of new strategies of process modeling and multivariate statistical process control (MSPC). Process modeling based on PCA batch analysis provided global distillation trajectories, whereas multiset MCR-ALS analysis is proposed to obtain a component-wise characterization of the distillation evolution and distilled fractions. Distillation curves, NIR spectra or compressed NIR information under the form of PCA scores and MCR-ALS concentration profiles were tested as the seed information to build MSPC models. New on-line PCA-based MSPC approaches, some inspired on local rank exploratory methods for process analysis, are proposed and work as follows: a)MSPC based on individual process observation models, where multiple local PCA models are built considering the sole information in each observation point; b) Fixed Size Moving Window - MSPC, in which local PCA models are built considering a moving window of the current and few past observation points; and c) Evolving MSPC, where local PCA models are built with an increasing window of observations covering all points since the beginning of the process until the current observation. Performance of different approaches has been assessed in terms of sensitivity to fault detection and number of false alarms. The outcome of this work will be of general use to define strategies for on-line process monitoring and control and, in a more specific way, to improve quality control of petroleum-derived fuels and other substances submitted to automatic distillation processes monitored by NIRS

    Phase II Study of BEZ235 versus Everolimus in Patients with Mammalian Target of Rapamycin Inhibitor‐Naïve Advanced Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors

    BACKGROUND: This phase II study investigated whether targeting the phosphatidylinositol 3‐kinase (PI3K)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway via PI3K, mTOR complex 1 (mTORC1) and mTOR complex 2 (mTORC2) inhibition using BEZ235 may be more effective than mTORC1 inhibition with everolimus in patients with advanced pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (pNET) who are naïve to mTOR inhibitor therapy. METHODS: Patients with advanced pNET were randomized (1:1) to oral BEZ235 400 mg twice daily or oral everolimus 10 mg once daily on a continuous dosing schedule. The primary endpoint was progression‐free survival (PFS). Secondary endpoints included safety, overall response rate (ORR), overall survival (OS), and time to treatment failure. RESULTS: Enrollment in this study was terminated early (62 enrolled of the 140 planned). The median PFS was 8.2 months (95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.3 to not evaluable [NE]) with BEZ235 versus 10.8 months (95% CI: 8.1–NE) with everolimus (hazard ratio 1.53; 95% CI: 0.72–3.25). The most commonly reported all‐grade adverse events (>50% of patients regardless of study treatment relationship) with BEZ235 were diarrhea (90.3%), stomatitis (74.2%), and nausea (54.8%). CONCLUSION: BEZ235 treatment in mTOR inhibitor‐naïve patients with advanced pNET did not demonstrate increased efficacy compared with everolimus and may be associated with a poorer tolerability profile
