Asexual and sexual replication in sporulating organisms
This paper develops models describing asexual and sexual replication in
sporulating organisms. Replication via sporulation is the replication strategy
for all multicellular life, and may even be observed in unicellular life (such
as with budding yeast). We consider diploid populations replicating via one of
two possible sporulation mechanisms: (1) Asexual sporulation, whereby adult
organisms produce single-celled diploid spores that grow into adults
themselves. (2) Sexual sporulation, whereby adult organisms produce
single-celled diploid spores that divide into haploid gametes. The haploid
gametes enter a haploid "pool", where they may recombine with other haploids to
form a diploid spore that then grows into an adult. We consider a haploid
fusion rate given by second-order reaction kinetics. We work with a simplified
model where the diploid genome consists of only two chromosomes, each of which
may be rendered defective with a single point mutation of the wild-type. We
find that the asexual strategy is favored when the rate of spore production is
high compared to the characteristic growth rate from a spore to a reproducing
adult. Conversely, the sexual strategy is favored when the rate of spore
production is low compared to the characteristic growth rate from a spore to a
reproducing adult. As the characteristic growth time increases, or as the
population density increases, the critical ratio of spore production rate to
organism growth rate at which the asexual strategy overtakes the sexual one is
pushed to higher values. Therefore, the results of this model suggest that, for
complex multicellular organisms, sexual replication is favored at high

Simulation of impulse response for indoor visible light communications using 3D CAD models
n this article, a tool for simulating the channel impulse response for indoor visible light communications using 3D
computer-aided design (CAD) models is presented. The simulation tool is based on a previous Monte Carlo
ray-tracing algorithm for indoor infrared channel estimation, but including wavelength response evaluation. The 3D scene, or the simulation environment, can be defined using any CAD software in which the user specifies, in
addition to the setting geometry, the reflection characteristics of the surface materials as well as the structures of the emitters and receivers involved in the simulation. Also, in an effort to improve the computational efficiency, two optimizations are proposed. The first one consists of dividing the setting into cubic regions of equal size, which offers a calculation improvement of approximately 50% compared to not dividing the 3D scene into sub-regions. The second one involves the parallelization of the simulation algorithm, which provides a computational speed-up proportional to the number of processors used
High-dispersion spectroscopic monitoring of the Be/X-ray binary A0535+26/V725 Tau I: The long-term profile variability
We report on optical high-dispersion spectroscopic monitoring observations of
the Be/X-ray binary A0535+26/V725 Tau, carried out from November 2005 to March
2009. The main aim of these monitoring observations is to study spectral
variabilities in the Be disc, on both the short (a week or so) and long (more
than hundreds of days) timescales, by taking long-term frequent observations.
Our four-year spectroscopic observations indicate that the V/R ratio, i.e., the
relative intensity of the violet (V) peak to the red (R) one, of the
double-peaked H-alpha line profile varies with a period of 500 days. The H-beta
line profile also varies in phase with the H-alpha profile. With these
observations covering two full cycles of the V/R variability, we reconstruct
the 2-D structure of the Be disc by applying the Doppler tomography method to
the H-alpha and H-beta emission line profiles, using a rigidly rotating frame
with the V/R variability period. The resulting disc structure reveals
non-axisymmetric features, which can be explained by a one-armed perturbation
in the Be disc. It is the first time that an eccentric disc structure is

Personality disorder services in England: findings from a national survey
Aims and method: We aimed to evaluate the availability and nature of services for people affected by personality disorder in England by conducting a survey of English National Health Service (NHS) mental health trusts and independent organisations.
Results: In England, 84% of organisations reported having at least one dedicated personality disorder service. This represents a fivefold increase compared with a 2002 survey. However, only 55% of organisations reported that patients had equal access across localities to these dedicated services. Dedicated services commonly had good levels of service use and carer involvement, and engagement in education, research and training. However, a wider multidisciplinary team and a greater number of biopsychosocial interventions were available through generic services.
Clinical implications: There has been a substantial increase in service provision for people affected by personality disorder, but continued variability in the availability of services is apparent and it remains unclear whether quality of care has improved
Las comunidades terapéuticas como tratamiento para las drogodependencias: una revisión sistemåtica del seguimiento a corto plazo
Objetivo. Las comunidades terapĂ©uticas (CT) constituyen uno de los tratamientos mĂĄs extensos para las drogodependencias; sin embargo, su investigaciĂłn es escasa. El objetivo fue realizar una revisiĂłn sistemĂĄtica para conocer los elementos metodolĂłgicos de los estudios de seguimiento a corto plazo y, a su vez, describir las consecuencias de las CT. Material y mĂ©todo. Se aplicĂł el "Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and meta- Analyses" (PRISMA) para la bĂșsqueda en Medline, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES y PsycCRITIQUES de estudios de seguimiento a corto plazo de CT entre 1980 y 2010. Resultados. El seguimiento consiste en un registro inicial y, al menos, otro al medio año de tratamiento; la muestra mĂnima contiene 60 usuarios con una mayor prevalencia de hombres solteros;el 50% continĂșa en seguimiento y/o alcanza la abstinencia. ConclusiĂłn. Las CT parecen ser beneficiosas para el ajuste del consumo y otros aspectos psicosociales, aunque la falta de informaciĂłn dificulta garantizar la comparaciĂłn de estos hallazgos. © 2013 Elsevier España, S.L. y SET. A Radio Survey of Seven Southern X-ray Luminous Clusters of Galaxies
The Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) has been used at 1.38 and 2.38
GHz to survey seven southern Abell clusters of galaxies with high X-ray
luminosities: A2746, A2837, A3126, A3216, A3230, A3827 and A3836. The clusters
have also been surveyed at 0.843 GHz with the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis
Telescope (MOST). We have listed a complete 1.38-GHz sample of 149 radio
sources within the Abell circles centred on their X-ray centroids. We compare
their identification fractions, emitted 1.38-GHz and optical powers, radio
spectral indices and radial variation in projected source density with those of
the radio-selected samples of Slee et al. (1998). We compare our fractional
radio luminosity function with that of the radio-selected samples of Ledlow and
Owen (1996) and Slee et al. (1998). Three significant differences are noted
between X-ray and radio-selected samples of clusters; (1) the X-ray sample has
an excess of flat-spectrum radio sources; (2) the fractional radio luminosity
function for the FR I sources in the X-ray selected sample is much steeper,
implying that fewer of their cluster galaxies become hosts for the stronger FR
I radio galaxies; (3) a complete absence of FR II radio galaxies in the X-ray
selected sample. The average excess projected density of radio sources near our

Reversal of gastrointestinal carcinoma-induced immunosuppression and induction of antitumoural immunity by a combination of cyclophosphamide and gene transfer of IL-12
Immunotherapy-based strategies for gastrointestinal carcinomas (GIC) have been exploited so far, but these approaches have to face strong mechanisms of immune escape induced by tumours. We previously demonstrated that sub-therapeutic doses of an adenovirus expressing IL-12 genes (AdIL-12) mediated a potent antitumour effect against subcutaneous (s.c.) colorectal carcinomas (CRC) in mice pre-treated with low doses of cyclophosphamide (Cy). In our study we used this combination to assess its impact on the immunosuppressive microenvironment. In s.c. CRC model we demonstrated that non-responder mice failed to decrease Tregs in tumour, spleen and peripheral blood. Reconstitution of Tregs into tumour-bearing mice treated with combined therapy abolished the antitumoural effect. In addition, Cy + AdIL-12 modified Tregs functionality by inhibiting the in vitro secretion of IL-10 and TGF-ÎČ and their ability to inhibit dendritic cells activation. Combined treatment decreased the number of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) in comparison to non-treated mice and, interestingly, administration of Tregs restored splenic MDSCs population. Furthermore, combined therapy potently generated specific cytotoxic IFN-Îł-secreting CD4+ T cells able to eradicate established CRC tumours after adoptive transfer. Finally, we evaluated the combination on disseminated CRC and pancreatic carcinoma (PC). Cy + AdIL-12 were able to eradicate liver metastatic CRC (47%) and PC tumour nodules (40%) and to prolong animal survival. The results of this study support the hypothesis that Cy + AdIL-12 might be a valid immunotherapeutic strategy for advanced GIC.Fil: Malvicini, Mariana. Serum levels of fibrogenesis biomarkers reveal distinct endotypes predictive of response to weight loss in advanced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

Substantial patient heterogeneity exists, so it remains challenging to risk-stratify patients. We hypothesized that the amount of fibroblast activity, as assessed by circulating biomarkers of collagen formation, can define a "high-risk, high-fibrogenesis" patient endotype that exhibits greater fibroblast activity and potentially more progressive disease, and this endotype may be more amendable to dietary intervention. Methods: Patients with clinically confirmed advanced NAFLD were prescribed a very low-calorie diet (VLCD) intervention (800 kcal/d) to induce weight loss, achieved using total diet replacement. Serum markers of type III (PRO-C3) and IV collagen (PRO-C4) fibrogenesis were assessed at baseline every second week until the end of the VLCD, and 4 weeks post-VLCD and at 9 months follow-up. Results: Twenty-six subjects had a mean weight loss of 9.7% with VLCD. This was associated with significant improvements in liver biochemistry. When stratified by baseline PRO-C3 and PRO-C4 into distinct fibrosis endotypes, these predicted substantial differences in collagen fibrogenesis marker dynamics in response to VLCD. Patients in the high activity group (PRO-C3 11.4 ng/mL and/or PRO-C4 236.5 ng/mL) exhibited a marked reduction of collagen fibrogenesis, ranging from a 40%-55% decrease in PRO-C3 and PRO-C4, while fibrogenesis remained unchanged in the low activity group. The biochemical response to weight loss was substantially greater in patients a priori exhibiting a high fibroblast activity endotype in contrast to patients with low activity. Conclusions: Thus, the likelihood of treatment response may be predicted at baseline by quantification of fibrogenesis biomarkers
Electrically pumped WSe2-based light-emitting van der Waals heterostructures embedded in monolithic dielectric microcavities
Vertical stacking of atomically thin layered materials opens new possibilities for the fabrication of heterostructures with favorable optoelectronic properties. The combination of graphene, hexagonal boron nitride and semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides allows fabrication of electroluminescence (EL) devices, compatible with a wide range of substrates. Here, we demonstrate a full integration of an electroluminescent van der Waals heterostructure in a monolithic optical microcavity made of two high reflectivity dielectric distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs). Owing to the presence of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride protecting the WSe2 during the top mirror deposition, we fully preserve the optoelectronic behaviour of the device. Two bright cavity modes appear in the EL spectrum featuring Q-factors of 250 and 580 respectively: the first is attributed directly to the monolayer area, while the second is ascribed to the portion of emission guided outside the WSe2 island. By embedding the EL device inside the microcavity structure, a significant modification of the directionality of the emitted light is achieved, with the peak intensity increasing by nearly two orders of magnitude at the angle of the maximum emission compared with the same EL device without the top DBR. Furthermore, the coupling of the WSe2 EL to the cavity mode with a dispersion allows a tuning of the peak emission wavelength exceeding 35 nm (80 meV) by varying the angle at which the EL is observed from the microcavity. This work provides a route for the development of compact vertical-cavity surface-emitting devices based on van der Waals heterostructures
Wavelength-Multiplexed Polymer LEDs:Towards 55 Mb/s Organic Visible Light Communications
We present recent progress on visible light communication systems using polymer light-emitting diodes as the transmitters and a commercial silicon photodetector as the receiver. In this paper, we use transmitters at red, green, and blue wavelengths to investigate the maximum on-off keying link performance of each device type as the first steps toward a wavelength-division multiplexed link. We show that a total transmission speed of 13 Mb/s is achievable when considering the raw bandwidth of each of the RGB PLEDs. Such a rate represents a 30% gain over previously demonstrated systems. Further capacity improvement can be achieved using high performance artificial neural network equalizer offering a realistic prospect for transmission speeds up to 54.9 Mb/s
