Reference priors for high energy physics
Bayesian inferences in high energy physics often use uniform prior
distributions for parameters about which little or no information is available
before data are collected. The resulting posterior distributions are therefore
sensitive to the choice of parametrization for the problem and may even be
improper if this choice is not carefully considered. Here we describe an
extensively tested methodology, known as reference analysis, which allows one
to construct parametrization-invariant priors that embody the notion of minimal
informativeness in a mathematically well-defined sense. We apply this
methodology to general cross section measurements and show that it yields
sensible results. A recent measurement of the single top quark cross section
illustrates the relevant techniques in a realistic situation
Statistical methods in cosmology
The advent of large data-set in cosmology has meant that in the past 10 or 20
years our knowledge and understanding of the Universe has changed not only
quantitatively but also, and most importantly, qualitatively. Cosmologists rely
on data where a host of useful information is enclosed, but is encoded in a
non-trivial way. The challenges in extracting this information must be overcome
to make the most of a large experimental effort. Even after having converged to
a standard cosmological model (the LCDM model) we should keep in mind that this
model is described by 10 or more physical parameters and if we want to study
deviations from it, the number of parameters is even larger. Dealing with such
a high dimensional parameter space and finding parameters constraints is a
challenge on itself. Cosmologists want to be able to compare and combine
different data sets both for testing for possible disagreements (which could
indicate new physics) and for improving parameter determinations. Finally,
cosmologists in many cases want to find out, before actually doing the
experiment, how much one would be able to learn from it. For all these reasons,
sophisiticated statistical techniques are being employed in cosmology, and it
has become crucial to know some statistical background to understand recent
literature in the field. I will introduce some statistical tools that any
cosmologist should know about in order to be able to understand recently
published results from the analysis of cosmological data sets. I will not
present a complete and rigorous introduction to statistics as there are several
good books which are reported in the references. The reader should refer to

Comparison of DVB-T Passive Radar Simulated and Measured Bistatic RCS Values for a Pilatus PC-12 Aircraft
Passive radar is a technology that has huge potential for airspace monitoring, taking advantage of existing transmissions. However, to predict whether particular targets can be measured in a particular scenario, it is necessary to be able to model the received signal. In this paper, we present the results of a campaign in which a Pilatus PC-12 single-engine aircraft was measured with a passive radar system relying on DVB-T transmission from a single transmitter. We then present our work to simulate the bistatic RCS of the aircraft along its flight track, using both the method of moments and the shooting and bouncing ray solvers, assess the uncertainty in the simulations, and compare against the measurements. We find that our simulated RCS values are useful in predicting whether or not detection occurs. However, we see poor agreement between simulated and measured RCS values where measurements are available, which we attribute primarily to the difficulties in extracting RCS measurements from the data and to unmodeled transmission and received path effects
Stalking influenza by vaccination with pre-fusion headless HA mini-stem.
Inaccuracies in prediction of circulating viral strain genotypes and the possibility of novel reassortants causing a pandemic outbreak necessitate the development of an anti-influenza vaccine with increased breadth of protection and potential for rapid production and deployment. The hemagglutinin (HA) stem is a promising target for universal influenza vaccine as stem-specific antibodies have the potential to be broadly cross-reactive towards different HA subtypes. Here, we report the design of a bacterially expressed polypeptide that mimics a H5 HA stem by protein minimization to focus the antibody response towards the HA stem. The HA mini-stem folds as a trimer mimicking the HA prefusion conformation. It is resistant to thermal/chemical stress, and it binds to conformation-specific, HA stem-directed broadly neutralizing antibodies with high affinity. Mice vaccinated with the group 1 HA mini-stems are protected from morbidity and mortality against lethal challenge by both group 1 (H5 and H1) and group 2 (H3) influenza viruses, the first report of cross-group protection. Passive transfer of immune serum demonstrates the protection is mediated by stem-specific antibodies. Furthermore, antibodies indudced by these HA stems have broad HA reactivity, yet they do not have antibody-dependent enhancement activity

A systematic review of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of peer education and peer support in prisons.
BACKGROUND: Prisoners experience significantly worse health than the general population. This review examines the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of peer interventions in prison settings. METHODS: A mixed methods systematic review of effectiveness and cost-effectiveness studies, including qualitative and quantitative synthesis was conducted. In addition to grey literature identified and searches of websites, nineteen electronic databases were searched from 1985 to 2012. Study selection criteria were: Population: Prisoners resident in adult prisons and children resident in Young Offender Institutions (YOIs). INTERVENTION: Peer-based interventions Comparators: Review questions 3 and 4 compared peer and professionally led approaches. OUTCOMES: Prisoner health or determinants of health; organisational/ process outcomes; views of prison populations. STUDY DESIGNS: Quantitative, qualitative and mixed method evaluations. RESULTS: Fifty-seven studies were included in the effectiveness review and one study in the cost-effectiveness review; most were of poor methodological quality. Evidence suggested that peer education interventions are effective at reducing risky behaviours, and that peer support services are acceptable within the prison environment and have a positive effect on recipients, practically or emotionally. Consistent evidence from many, predominantly qualitative, studies, suggested that being a peer deliverer was associated with positive effects. There was little evidence on cost-effectiveness of peer-based interventions. CONCLUSIONS: There is consistent evidence from a large number of studies that being a peer worker is associated with positive health; peer support services are also an acceptable source of help within the prison environment and can have a positive effect on recipients. Using WormBase: A Genome Biology Resource for Caenorhabditis elegans and Related Nematodes
WormBase (www.wormbase.org) provides the nematode research community with a centralized database for information pertaining to nematode genes and genomes. As more nematode genome sequences are becoming available and as richer data sets are published, WormBase strives to maintain updated information, displays, and services to facilitate efficient access to and understanding of the knowledge generated by the published nematode genetics literature. This chapter aims to provide an explanation of how to use basic features of WormBase, new features, and some commonly used tools and data queries. Explanations of the curated data and step-by-step instructions of how to access the data via the WormBase website and available data mining tools are provided
Future directions in international financial integration research. A crowdsourced perspective
This paper is the result of a crowdsourced effort to surface perspectives on
the present and future direction of international finance. The authors are
researchers in financial economics who attended the INFINITI 2017 conference
in the University of Valencia in June 2017 and who participated in the
crowdsourcing via the Overleaf platform. This paper highlights the actual
state of scientific knowledge in a multitude of fields in finance and proposes
different directions for future research
Standard of civilization, nomadism and territoriality in nineteenth-century international society
In this chapter, the encounter between the Russian Empire and the nomads of the Eurasian steppe in the nineteenth century is analyzed using the theoretical framework of the standard of civilization. The creation of the Westphalian state-model in Europe in the seventeenth century, linked to the later emergence of the notion of the standard of civilization led to the ‘othering’ of the nomads of the Eurasian steppe as barbarians, as a threat to the borders of civilized Europe. The chapter presents also an argument to define ‘territoriality’ as not only an institution of international society of the time but also as a distinctive quality and requirement for being considered ‘civilized’. In this analytical framework, the nomads become the ‘other’, the ‘alien’, the ‘menace’, onto which projections of rationality and modernity were cast in order to prevent threats to Russia’s European and civilized identity. The chapter sheds light on the encounter between ‘fixed’ and ‘mobile’ units in the course of expansion of international society; contextualizes the role played by nomadic tribes in resisting the application of Westphalian spatial categories in the Eurasian space; and scrutinizes what the role of nomads was in constructing a European, civilized identity.PostprintPeer reviewe
