Palaeolimnology of Lake Sapanca and identification of historic earthquake signals, Northern Anatolian Fault Zone (Turkey)
Lake Sapanca is located on a strand of the Northern Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ, Turkey), where a series of strong earthquakes (Ms >6.0) have occurred over the past hundred years. Identifying prehistoric
earthquakes in and around Lake Sapanca is key to a better understanding of plate movements along the
NAFZ. This study contributes to the development of palaeolimnological tools to identify past earthquakes
in Lake Sapanca. To this end several promising proxies were investigated, specifically lithology, magnetic
susceptibility, grain size (thin-section and laser analysis), geochemistry, pollen concentration, diatom
assemblages, 137Cs and 210Pb. Sedimentological indicators provided evidence for reworked, turbidite-like
or homogeneous facies (event layers) in several short cores (<45 cm). Other indicators of sediment input
and the historical chronicles available for the area suggest that three of these event layers likely originated
from the AD 1957, 1967 and 1999 earthquakes. Recent changes in sediment deposition and nutrient
levels have also been identified, but are probably not related to earthquakes. This study demonstrates
that a combination of indicators can be used to recognize earthquake-related event layers in cores that encompass a longer period of time
Hypersatellite Kα Production in Trapped Ar Ions at KK Trielectronic Recombination Energies

© 2023 by the authors.We report measurements of hypersatellite radiation of argon ions in the electron energy region of 5200 eV to 7500 eV. Here, we observed a strong enhancement of this hypersatellite (Formula presented.) production. Trielectronic recombination (TR) is discussed as a possible channel for (Formula presented.) production leading to this enhancement where main TR resonances are expected to occur. Data analysis was mainly based on the extracted intensity ratio of hypersatellite (Formula presented.) to (Formula presented.) lines ((Formula presented.)). In addition, the collisional excitation and the collisional ionisation of the K-shell ions were modeled as main background processes of the K (Formula presented.) X-ray production. The (Formula presented.) / (Formula presented.) intensity ratio shows a significant rise around 6500 eV electron energy by a factor of about two above the background level. This observation is compared with calculations of the expected electron energies for the resonant (Formula presented.) emission due to the KK TR process. The observed rise as a function of the electron collision energy, which occurs in the vicinity of the predicted TR resonances, is significantly stronger and energetically much wider than the results of theoretical calculations for the TR process. Pliocene to Pleistocene climate and environmental history of Lake El\u27gygytgyn, Far East Russian Arctic, based on high-resolution inorganic geochemistry data
The 3.6 Ma sediment record of Lake El\u27gygytgyn/NE Russia, Far East Russian Arctic, represents the longest continuous climate archive of the terrestrial Arctic. Its elemental composition as determined by X-ray fluorescence scanning exhibits significant changes since the mid-Pliocene caused by climate-driven variations in primary production, postdepositional diagenetic processes, and lake circulation as well as weathering processes in its catchment. During the mid- to late Pliocene, warmer and wetter climatic conditions are reflected by elevated Si / Ti ratios, indicating enhanced diatom production in the lake. Prior to 3.3 Ma, this signal is overprinted by intensified detrital input from the catchment, visible in maxima of clastic-related proxies, such as K. In addition, calcite formation in the early lake history points to enhanced Ca flux into the lake caused by intensified weathering in the catchment. A lack of calcite deposition after ca. 3.3 Ma is linked to the development of permafrost in the region triggered by cooling in the mid-Pliocene. After ca. 3.0 Ma the elemental data suggest a gradual transition to Pleistocene-style glacial-interglacial cyclicity. In the early Pleistocene, the cyclicity was first dominated by variations on the 41 kyr obliquity band but experienced a change to a 100 kyr eccentricity dominance during the middle Pleistocene transition (MPT) at ca. 1.2-0.6 Ma. This clearly demonstrates the sensitivity of the Lake El\u27gygytgyn record to orbital forcing. A successive decrease of the baseline levels of the redox-sensitive Mn / Fe ratio and magnetic susceptibility between 2.3 and 1.8 Ma reflects an overall change in the bottom-water oxygenation due to an intensified occurrence of pervasive glacial episodes in the early Pleistocene. The coincidence with major changes in the North Pacific and Bering Sea paleoceanography at ca. 1.8 Ma implies that the change in lake hydrology was caused by a regional cooling in the North Pacific and the western Beringian landmass and/or changes in the continentality. Further increases in total organic carbon and total nitrogen content after ca. 1.6 Ma are attributed to reduced organic matter decay in the sediment during prolonged anoxic periods. This points to more extensive periods of perennial ice coverage, and thus, to a progressive shifts towards more intense peak glacial periods. In the course of the Pleistocene glacial-interglacial sequence eight so-called super-interglacials occur. Their exceptionally warm conditions are reflected by extreme Si / Ti peaks accompanied by lows in Ti, K, and Fe, thus indicating extraordinary high lake productivity
High temperature behavior of functional TiAlBSiN nanocomposite coatings
This article reports on the thorough characterization of structural-phase transformation in amorphous TiAlBSiN coating after high temperature annealing at 900 °C in ambient air. The influence of annealing on the tribomechanical behavior of the coating at nano and micro scale was also examined. The research included multiple experimental techniques, i.e. AFM, SEM, TEM, HR-TEM, EDS, XPS and Raman spectroscopy. Experiments showed that the amorphous phase of the TiAlBSiN coating undergoes a structural transformation, evidenced in the changes of parameters such as topological and chemical short-range order after the post-deposition annealing at 900 °C in air. The observed structural transformation, leads to a phase separation with the formation of a three dimensional nc-TiAl3/a-SiBN(O) nanocomposite structure. The relative increase of hardness, reduced elastic modulus, H/Er ratio and H2 /E3 r ratio after high temperature treatment of TiAlBSiN coatings is also reported. The complex interdependency between chemistry, morphology and relative composition of the amorphous TiAlBSiN coating phase, during the high temperature treatment, with the respective change of the tribo-mechanical characteristics, are evidence of the improvement of the coating properties in response to the environmental conditions and high temperature. Novel associations in disorders of sex development: findings from the I-DSD registry
Context:
The focus of care in disorders of sex development (DSD) is often directed to issues related to sex and gender development. In addition, the molecular etiology remains unclear in the majority of cases.<p></p>
Objective:
To report the range of associated conditions identified in the international DSD (I-DSD) Registry.<p></p>
Design, Setting, and Patients:
Anonymized data were extracted from the I-DSD Registry for diagnosis, karyotype, sex of rearing, genetic investigations, and associated anomalies. If necessary, clarification was sought from the reporting clinician.<p></p>
Results:
Of 649 accessible cases, associated conditions occurred in 168 (26%); 103 (61%) cases had one condition, 31 (18%) had two conditions, 20 (12%) had three conditions, and 14 (8%) had four or more conditions. Karyotypes with most frequently reported associations included 45,X with 6 of 8 affected cases (75%), 45,X/46,XY with 19 of 42 cases (45%), 46,XY with 112 of 460 cases (24%), and 46,XX with 27 of 121 cases (22%). In the 112 cases of 46,XY DSD, the commonest conditions included small for gestational age in 26 (23%), cardiac anomalies in 22 (20%), and central nervous system disorders in 22 (20%), whereas in the 27 cases of 46,XX DSD, skeletal and renal anomalies were commonest at 12 (44%) and 8 (30%), respectively. Of 170 cases of suspected androgen insensitivity syndrome, 19 (11%) had reported anomalies and 9 of these had confirmed androgen receptor mutations.<p></p>
Conclusions:
Over a quarter of the cases in the I-DSD Registry have an additional condition. These associations can direct investigators toward novel genetic etiology and also highlight the need for more holistic care of the affected person.<p></p>
QSAR studies on a number of pyrrolidin-2-one antiarrhythmic arylpiperazinyls
The activity of a number of 1-[3-(4-arylpiperazin-1-yl)propyl]pyrrolidin-2-one antiarrhythmic (AA) agents was described using the quantitative structure–activity relationship model by applying it to 33 compounds. The molecular descriptors of the AA activity were obtained by quantum chemical calculations combined with molecular modeling calculations. The resulting model explains up to 91% of the variance and it was successfully validated by four tests (LOO, LMO, external test, and Y-scrambling test). Statistical analysis shows that the AA activity of the studied compounds depends mainly on the PCR and JGI4 descriptors
