Neste romance, o Outro ganha voz.

A deep analysis of the novel Portagem, by Orlando Mendes, helped by a set of texts of the Author published in newspapers of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, may lead us to a new reading approach of the text, of the values expressed and the ideological assumptions inherent to a realistic aesthetics. Influenced by the Portuguese Neo-Realism and by the American social novel of the 1920s and 1930s, the Author defines a project, in which he exposes the difficulties lived by the main character, the bi-racial João Xilim, in a colonial society, that feels marginalized and discriminated by whites and blacks, victim of the mistrust of both races. The doubts related to the duality of the character, leads him to a quest for the statement of his identity, which coincides to a series of obstacles and meetings with other characters, allowing his interior growth and a consciousness of his role in that society. The moment of the full statement of his option, the option of being black, recognized by the others, happens while in jail, when he chooses the blacks. The payment of the toll is accomplished. In the process of composing the plot, in descriptive moments that happen before problematic situations, the Author uses formal procedures that bring it close to the American social novel, especially to The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck, showing a cinematographic technique and the moving away of the narrator, which brings the real effect. However, this project is also a thesis novel, as it was written with the purpose of making the apology of bi-racialism and biculturalism and proposing a new society based on the synthesis of the ancient values of traditional Africa and the message of fraternity and solidarity of the New Humanism

Development of a Sport Food Exchange List for Dietetic Practice in Sport Nutrition

Food exchange lists have been widely used in dietary practice in health and disease situations, but there are still no exchange lists for sports foods. The aim of this study was to apply a previous published methodology to design food exchange lists to the development of a sports food exchange list, with sport products available in Spain. A cross-sectional study of the nutritional composition of sports foods, regarding macronutrients and energy, was carried out. A total of 322 sports foods from 18 companies were selected, taking into account their interest in sports practice and with nutritional data provided by companies. Sports foods were divided into seven groups: sports drinks; sports gels; sports bars; sports confectionery; protein powders; protein bars; and liquid meals. A sports food composition database based on portion size usually consumed by athletes and/or recommended in commercial packaging was created. Within each sports foods group, different subgroups were defined due to differences in the main and/or secondary macronutrient. The definition of each exchange list with the amounts—in grams—of each sports food within each group and subgroup, was done using statistical criteria such as mean, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, and Z value. Final exchange values for energy and macronutrient have been established for each group and subgroup using a methodology to design food exchange lists previously published by the authors. In addition, those products with high Z values that can provide greater variability in dietary planning were included. The usefulness of sport foods lists as well as the use of an exchange system in the dietary practice of sports nutrition is discussed, and examples of how to use them with athletes are presented. This first sport foods exchange list showed in this study, with commercial sports products available in Spain, can be a novel tool for dietetic practice and also can allow sport nutrition professionals to develop another sport food list using the methodology described in this paper. Its management would allow dietitians to adapt dietary plans more precisely to the training and/or competition of the athlete

This article belongs to the Special Issue Kingella kingae: Virulence Factors, Clinical Disease, and Diagnostics.(1) Background: We aim to identify clinical and laboratorial parameters to distinguish Kingella kingae from pyogenic septic arthritis (SA). (2) Methods: A longitudinal, observational, single-centre study of children 6 months ≤ 2 years, apyrexy and CRP ≤ 100 mg/L were significative, with an overall predictive positive value of 86.5%, and 88.4% for K. kingae. For this model, ROC curves were capable of differentiating (AUC 0.861, 95% CI 0.767-0.955) K. kingae SA from typical pathogens. (4) Conclusions: Age > 6 months ≤ 2 years, apyrexy and PCR ≤ 100 mg/L were the main predictive factors to distinguish K. kingae from pyogenic SA < 5 years. These data need to be validated in a larger study.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

okIntroduction: Despite the current trend towards less aggressive therapeutic approaches, acute haematogenous osteomyelitis (AHO) continues to be a challenge and is associated with significant morbidity worldwide. Our aim was to determine if 80% compliance with current protocol was achieved, identify complications and associated risk factors and analyse trends in aetiology and management of AHO in children. Methods: We conducted a longitudinal, observational, single-centre study in patients with AHO aged less than 18 years admitted to a paediatric hospital, between 2008 and 2018, divided into 2 cohorts (before and after 2014). Demographic, clinical data and disease progression were analysed. Results: The study included 71 children with AHO, 56% male, with a median age of 3 years (interquartile range, 1–11). We found a 1.8-fold increase of cases in the last 5 years. The causative agent was identified in 37% of cases: MSSA (54%), MRSA (4%), Streptococcus pyogenes (19%), Kingella kingae (12%), Streptococcus pneumoniae (8%), and Neisseria meningitidis (4%). Complications were identified in 45% of patients and sequelae in 3.6%. In recent years, there was an increase in myositis (30% vs. 7%; p = 0.02), septic arthritis (68% vs. 37.2%; p = 0.012) and in the proportion of patients treated for less than 4 weeks (37% vs. 3.5%; p = 0.012), with a similar sequelae rates. The risk factors for complications were age 3 or more years, CRP levels of 20 mg/l or higher, time elapsed between onset and admission of 5 or more days and positive culture, although on multivariate analysis only positive culture was significant. The presence of complications was a risk factor for sequelae at 6 months. Conclusions: Our study confirms that AHO can be aggressive. The identification of risk factors for complications may be fundamental for management.publishersversionpublishe

    Get PDF
The level of meat consumption is one of the main deviations from the Mediterranean diet pattern in Spanish university students. The objective of this cross-sectional descriptive study is to analyze the association between sociodemographic factors and the consumption of fresh and processed meat in Spanish university students. This study is part of a cohort of 11 Spanish universities with 9862 university students (UniHcos Project). A descriptive analysis and a chi2 test were carried out to assess differences between personal and sociodemographic variables and meat consumption, and binary logistic regression analysis to assess factors associated with consumption; 19.9% and 73.5% met the recommendations for meat-fresh and meat-processed consumption, respectively. Only 3.8% of students meet the recommendations for both fresh and processed meat. Statistically significant differences were found between sex, BMI, employment, housing, and coexistence regarding compliance with recommendations. Female employed students living in rental accommodations with a partner are more likely to meet the recommendations for fresh meats while male, normal weight, employed students living in rental accommodations with a partner are more likely to meet the recommendations for processed meats. There is a lack of compliance with the recommendations for consumption of fresh meat in Spanish university students, differences in compliance among students of differing regions and an association with sex, employment, housing, and coexistence regarding compliance. This study was funded by the National Drug Plan, Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality of Spain (Codes: 2010|145 and 2013|034) and project PI16/01947
