An exploration of the impact of celebrity on the HIV/AIDS pandemic
The framework we present in this article separates into three generations the celebrity/personality involvement in the AIDS movement that has been steadily building momentum over the past 25 years. We analyze the celebrification of HIV/AIDS and the role of the media in the process. We contend the relationship between celebrity, the public and HIV/AIDS is multipurpose: celebrities maintain a positive public presence between projects while allowing themselves and their supporting fans to feel good about taking on and affecting a meaningful cause. Celebrities are vehicles and embodiments of concern that act as proxies for their various audiences. And this is their power–celebrities are embodiments of their audiences. The awareness that celebrities have brought to the HIV/AIDS epidemic has resulted in better treatment for victims and increased government support for medical research, and yet has also distracted the public’s attention from the scope of the epidemic. It is the third generation of celebrities who are refocusing efforts on worldwide prevention and a cure for HIV/AIDS
Factors related to adolescent drinking in Appalachia
Objectives: To examine the relationships among parental monitoring, perceptions of peer drinking, and adolescent alcohol consumption.
Methods: Tenth- and 12thgrade students (N=648) in a rural,
Appalachian county were surveyed.
Results: A binomial logistic regression revealed a composite of those who had perceptions that many
peers drank, low parental monitoring, and no biological male guardian in the home were 8.496 times more likely to have ever been drunk.
Other characteristics resulted in lower odds. Conclusions: Parental monitoring and perceptions of peer drinking were important predictors of drinking in this rural sample.

Researching the lived experiences of cancer patients with malignant fungating wounds
Background: Researching the experiences of terminally ill patients with disfiguring wounds is likely to be a challenge anywhere, and this investigation came face-to-face with different attitudes on the part of both patients and nurses and doctors in England (the South-East) and Italy (Tuscany).
Aim: To highlight the complexity of researching sensitive subjects and the difficulties encountered from the perspective of the researcher(s).
Methods: Fourteen patients were interviewed. In England access was relatively straightforward, with nurses linked to the hospice doing most of the recruitment. Access was more difficult in Italy, with some doctors expressing opposition.
Discussion: How ethical is it to treat dying patients as subjects for research? How does research of this kind vary from one culture to another?
Conclusions: Interviewees can find it therapeutic to talk about their experiences to a sympathetic listener—although the listening does pose a considerable strain on the researcher
Six-color photometry of Iapetus, Titan, Rhea, Dione and Tethys
The extensive photometric observations of Titan, Iapetus, Rhea, Dione and Tethys have made it possible to separate the solar phase and orbital phase contributions to the observed light variations of these satellites. For Titan, the wavelength dependence of its solar phase coefficient has been obtained. This dependence should prove useful in constructing future model atmospheres. The other four satellites show a surprising array of different photometric behaviors. Despite these differences, all four satellites have similar spectral reflectivities. Clearly Iapetus, Rhea, Dione and Tethys are complex objects, varying substantially from one another in surface structure and/or composition
The interface between silicon and a high-k oxide
The ability to follow Moore's Law has been the basis of the tremendous
success of the semiconductor industry in the past decades. To date, the
greatest challenge for device scaling is the required replacement of silicon
dioxide-based gate oxides by high-k oxides in transistors. Around 2010 high-k
oxides are required to have an atomically defined interface with silicon
without any interfacial SiO2 layer. The first clean interface between silicon
and a high-K oxide has been demonstrated by McKee et al. Nevertheless, the
interfacial structure is still under debate. Here we report on first-principles
calculations of the formation of the interface between silicon and SrTiO3 and
its atomic structure. Based on insights into how the chemical environment
affects the interface, a way to engineer seemingly intangible electrical
properties to meet technological requirements is outlined. The interface
structure and its chemistry provide guidance for the selection process of other
high-k gate oxides and for controlling their growth. Our study also shows that
atomic control of the interfacial structure can dramatically improve the
electronic properties of the interface. The interface presented here serves as

Measurement of Sibling Violence: A Two-Factor Model of Severity
The measurement of violence is a major challenge in aggression research. Because of the heterogeneous nature of violent behavior, problems arise when applying blanket measures to inherently distinct subtypes of aggression. Incidents of intersibling violence (ISV) exacerbate these problems because siblinghood represents a unique offender–victim situation. This research explored whether an existing two-factor model for severe violence found in a sample of 250 adult offenders (age M = 26.8, SD = 5.9) could be generalized to deliberate severe ISV in a sample of 111 young offenders (age M = 14.83, SD = 1.45). Exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factor model encompassing severe ISV perpetration with weapon use (Factor 1) and severe ISV perpetration without weapon use (Factor 2). The results provide strong empirical support for the two-factor model of violence severity previously established with adult offenders. This analysis demonstrates construct validity of the severity measures among the different types of offenders studied and provides support for generalization across populations

An approach to time dependence and reliability in dynamic route guidance
This paper presents a methodology, in order to increase the reliability of the route suggestions in route guidance systems. Based on the A* path finding algorithm and Chen’s link penalty method, the procedure involves penalising links with a high risk of being congested and obtaining a set of reliable route suggestions. Time-dependence of travel times is considered by adapting the Flow Speed Model technique accordingly. Modifications to the structure of the path finding algorithms are also made, so as to account for real road network features. Finally, experiments using simulated travel time and reliability data are carried out on a road network and the results are discussed

Acceptability, feasibility, drug safety, and effectiveness of a pilot mass drug administration with a single round of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine plus primaquine and indoor residual spraying in communities with malaria transmission in Haiti, 2018
For a malaria elimination strategy, Haiti's National Malaria Control Program piloted a mass drug administration (MDA) with indoor residual spraying (IRS) in 12 high-transmission areas across five communes after implementing community case management and strengthened surveillance. The MDA distributed sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine and single low-dose primaquine to eligible residents during house visits. The IRS campaign applied pirimiphos-methyl insecticide on walls of eligible houses. Pre- and post-campaign cross-sectional surveys were conducted to assess acceptability, feasibility, drug safety, and effectiveness of the combined interventions. Stated acceptability for MDA before the campaign was 99.2%; MDA coverage estimated at 10 weeks post-campaign was 89.6%. Similarly, stated acceptability of IRS at baseline was 99.9%; however, household IRS coverage was 48.9% because of the high number of ineligible houses. Effectiveness measured by Plasmodium falciparum prevalence at baseline and 10 weeks post-campaign were similar: 1.31% versus 1.43%, respectively. Prevalence of serological markers were similar at 10 weeks post-campaign compared with baseline, and increased at 6 months. No severe adverse events associated with the MDA were identified in the pilot; there were severe adverse events in a separate, subsequent campaign. Both MDA and IRS are acceptable and feasible interventions in Haiti. Although a significant impact of a single round of MDA/IRS on malaria transmission was not found using a standard pre- and post-intervention comparison, it is possible there was blunting of the peak transmission. Seasonal malaria transmission patterns, suboptimal IRS coverage, and low baseline parasitemia may have limited the effectiveness or the ability to measure effectiveness
