    Membrane Reactor Based on Hybrid Nanomaterials for Process Intensification of Catalytic Hydrogenation Reaction: an Example of Reduction of the Environmental Footprint of Chemical Synthesis from a Batch to a Continuous Flow Chemistry Process

    Membrane processes represent a well matured technology for water treatment with low environmental footprints compared to other type of processes. We have now combined this technology with nanomaterials, ionic liquids (negligible vapor pressure), and poly(ionic liquids) in order to enlarge the field of applications while benefiting from the advantages of membranes. We have modified flat sheet water filtration membrane and used it as both catalytic support and reactor with the advantages to make the reaction and the separation of products in only one step. For this purpose, catalytic metallic nanoparticles of palladium (diameter of ca. 2 nm) were synthesized in a gel-poly(ionic liquid) layer grafted at the surface of polymeric filtration membranes by UV-photografting method. The so obtained catalytic membrane was successfully applied in the hydrogenation of trans-4-phenyl-3-buten-2-one in forced flow-through configuration, which gave full conversion in a few seconds (2.6 s) showing advantages over the batch reactor process (in that case, palladium nanoparticles were synthesized in the ionic liquid [MMPIM][NTf2] (1,2-dimethyl-3-propylimidazolium bis-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide)). Nevertheless, the catalytic membrane used in submerged mode no more prevailed over the batch reactor. Catalytic nanoparticles remain highly active in the membrane after 12 cycles of reaction without need of recuperation. Results were compared to one obtains with a similar system in batch reactor conditions, showing high efficiency of our process in term of selectivity and reactivity, combined to an important compactness, the productivity of the catalytic hollow fiber membrane reactor and permitting to operate at larger scale with promising results in an environmental friendly way in term of energy and product (metal, solvent) consuming

    International audienceLes enfants déficients visuels rencontrent certaines difficultés dans le milieu scolaire par manque de moyens adaptés. L'éducation utilise beaucoup de schémas par exemple. Les déficients visuels utilisent des schémas sur du papier en relief , qui sont tout simplement inutilisables s'ils ne sont pas simplifiés et agrémentés d'indications. Une possibilité serait d'utiliser des périphériques haptiques pour représenter ces schémas. Le but de cette étude est d'évaluer un logiciel d'exploration de circuits électriques haptiques pour enfants déficients visuels à l'aide d'un PHANToM. Dans ce logiciel les circuits peuvent être parcourus sur deux niveaux. Le premier niveau est la vue globale, c'est-à-dire la forme du circuit. L'utilisateur parcourt le circuit comme un labyrinthe où des forces le contraignent sur le circuit. Des indications sous forme d'impulsions haptiques sont placées aux intersections pour aider l'utilisateur dans sa navigation. Le but de la première expérience est d'examiner la navigation de l'utilisateur dans le circuit. Le second niveau d'exploration concerne la vue locale du circuit : les composants électriques. Ils sont représentés par des séquences d'impulsions que l'utilisateur ressent lorsqu'il passe sur un fil où se trouve un composant. La reconnaissance des séquences d'impulsions (et donc des composants) est le but de la seconde expérience. Il apparaît que même si la technique est encore perfectible, les utilisateurs semblent être intéressés par cet outil. Ils sont en général séduits par la possibilité d'être aidé tout en pouvant contrôler l'exploration

    High catalytic efficiency of palladium nanoparticles immobilized in a polymer membrane containing poly(ionic liquid) in Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction

    The elaboration of a polymeric catalytic membrane containing palladium nanoparticles is presented. The membrane was prepared using a photo-grafting process with imidazolium-based ionic liquid monomers as modifying agent and microPES® as support membrane. Ionic liquid serves as a stabilizer and immobilizer for the catalytic species, i.e. palladium nanoparticles. The Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction was carried out on the catalytic membrane in flow-through configuration. Complete conversion was achieved in 10 s through one single filtration, without formation of byproducts. The apparent reaction rate constant was three orders of magnitude greater than in a batch reactor. No catalyst leaching was detected. This membrane offers the possibility of continuous production with no need for a separation step of the catalyst from the reaction medium

    Populations of high-value predators reflect the traits of their prey

    The extent to which prey traits combine to influence the abundance of predators is still poorly understood, particularly for mixed predators in sympatry and in aquatic ecosystems. In this study, we characterise prey use and distribution in iconic bird (grey wagtails and Eurasian dippers) and fish species (brown trout and Atlantic salmon) to assess whether prey traits could predict populations of these four riverine predators. Specifically, we hypothesised that: 1) prey key traits would predict predator populations more effectively than 2) diversity of prey traits, 3) the taxonomic abundance or richness of prey (known as traditional or mass‐effect types of biodiversity) or 4) the prevailing environmental conditions. Combined predator population sizes were predicted better by a few key traits – specifically those revealing prey habitat use, size and drifting behaviour – than by prey diversity or prey trait diversity or environmental conditions. Our findings demonstrate that the complex relationships between prey assemblages and multiple predator species can be represented mechanistically when the key prey traits that govern encounter and consumption rates are identified. Given their apparent potential to reveal trophic relationships, and to complement more traditional measures of prey abundance, we advocate further development of trait‐based approaches in predator–prey research

    A randomised controlled trial comparing opt-in and opt-out home visits for tracing lost participants in a prospective birth cohort study

    © 2015 Bray et al. Background: Attrition is an important problem in cohort studies. Tracing cohort members who have moved or otherwise lost contact with the study is vital. There is some debate about the acceptability and relative effectiveness of opt-in versus opt-out methods of contacting cohort members to re-engage them in this context. We conducted a randomised controlled trial to compare the two approaches in terms of effectiveness (tracing to confirm address and consenting to continue in the study), cost-effectiveness and acceptability. Methods: Participants in this trial were individuals (young people and mothers) recruited to the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), who had not engaged with the study in the previous 5 years and for whom mail had been returned from their last known address. The sampling frame was restricted to those for whom database searching led to a potential new address being found in the Bristol area. 300 participants were randomly selected and assigned using stratified randomisation to the opt-in or opt-out arm. A tailored letter was sent to the potential new address, either asking participants to opt in to a home visit, or giving them the option to opt out of a home visit. Fieldworkers from Ipsos MORI conducted home visits to confirm address details. Results: The proportion who were traced was higher in the opt-out arm (77/150∈=∈51 %) than the opt-in arm (6/150∈=∈4 %), as was the proportion who consented to continue in ALSPAC (46/150∈=∈31 % v 4/150∈=∈3 %). The mean cost per participant was £8.14 in the opt-in arm and £71.93 in the opt-out arm. There was no evidence of a difference in acceptability between the opt-in and opt-out approaches. Conclusion: Since the opt-in approach yielded very low response rates, and there were no differences in terms of acceptability, we conclude that the opt-out approach is the most effective method of tracing disengaged study members. The gains made in contacting participants must be weighed against the increase in cost using this methodology

    Mode of delivery affected questionnaire response rates in a birth cohort study

    © 2016 The Author(s) Objectives Cohort studies must collect data from their participants as economically as possible, while maintaining response rates. This randomized controlled trial investigated whether offering a choice of online or paper questionnaires resulted in improved response rates compared with offering online first. Study Design and Setting Eligible participants were young people in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) study (born April 1, 1991, to December 31, 1992, in the Avon area). After exclusions, 8,795 participants were randomized. The “online first” group were invited to complete the questionnaire online. The “choice” group were also sent a paper questionnaire and offered a choice of completion method. The trial was embedded within routine data collection. The main outcome measure was the number of questionnaires returned. Data on costs were also collected. Results Those in the “online first” arm of the trial were less likely to return a questionnaire [adjusted odds ratio: 0.90; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.82, 0.99]. The “choice” arm was more expensive (mean difference per participant £0.71; 95% CI: £0.65, £0.76). It cost an extra £47 to have one extra person to complete the questionnaire in the “choice” arm. Conclusion Offering a choice of completion methods (paper or online) for questionnaires in ALSPAC increased response rates but was more expensive than offering online first

    Protomers of the green and cyan fluorescent protein chromophores investigated using action spectroscopy

    The photophysics of biochromophore ions often depends on the isomeric or protomeric distribution, yet this distribution, and the individual isomer contributions to an action spectrum, can be difficult to quantify. Here, we use two separate photodissociation action spectroscopy instruments to record electronic spectra for protonated forms of the green (pHBDI+) and cyan (Cyan+) fluorescent protein chromophores. One instrument allows for cryogenic (T = 40±10 K) cooling of the ions, while the other offers the ability to perform protomer-selective photodissociation spectroscopy. We show that both chromophores are generated as two protomers when using electrospray ionisation, and that the protomers have partially overlapping absorption profiles associated with the S1 ← S0 transition. The action spectra for both species span the 340–460 nm range, although the spectral onset for the pHBDI+ protomer with the proton residing on the carbonyl oxygen is red-shifted by ≈40 nm relative to the lower-energy imine protomer. Similarly, the imine and carbonyl protomers are the lowest energy forms of Cyan+, with the main band for the carbonyl protomer red-shifted by ≈60 nm relative to the lower-energy imine protomer. The present strategy for investigating protomers can be applied to a wide range of other biochromophore ions

    Knee Arthroplasty: Disabilities in Comparison to the General Population and to Hip Arthroplasty Using a French National Longitudinal Survey

    International audienceBACKGROUND: Knee arthroplasty is increasing exponentially due to the aging of the population and to the broadening of indications. We aimed to compare physical disability and its evolution over two years in people with knee arthroplasty to that in the general population. A secondary objective was to compare the level of disabilities of people with knee to people with hip arthroplasty. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: 16,945 people representative of the French population were selected in 1999 from the French census and interviewed about their level of disability. This sample included 815 people with lower limb arthroplasty. In 2001, 608 of them were re-interviewed, among whom 134 had knee arthroplasty. Among the other participants re-interviewed, we identified 68 who had undergone knee arthroplasty and 145 hip arthroplasty within the last two years (recent arthroplasty). People with knee arthroplasty reported significantly greater difficulties than the general population with bending forward (odds ratio [OR] = 4.7; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.7, 12.6), walking more than 500 meters (OR = 6.0; 95% CI: 1.5, 24.7) and carrying 5 kg kilograms for 10 meters (OR = 4.6; 95% CI: 1.3, 16.4). However, the two years evolution in disability was similar to that in the general population for most activities. The level of mobility was similar between people with recent knee arthroplasty and those with recent hip arthroplasty. Nevertheless, people with recent knee arthroplasty reported a lower level of disability than the other group for washing and bending forward (OR = 0.3; 95% CI: 0.1, 0.6 and OR = 0.4; 95% CI: 0.1, 0.9, respectively). CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: People with knee arthroplasty reported a higher risk of disability than the general population for common activities of daily living but a similar evolution. There was no relevant difference between recent knee and hip arthroplasties for mobility

    Comparing HLA Shared Epitopes in French Caucasian Patients with Scleroderma

    Although many studies have analyzed HLA allele frequencies in several ethnic groups in patients with scleroderma (SSc), none has been done in French Caucasian patients and none has evaluated which one of the common amino acid sequences, 67FLEDR71, shared by HLA-DRB susceptibility alleles, or 71TRAELDT77, shared by HLA-DQB1 susceptibility alleles in SSc, was the most important to develop the disease. HLA-DRB and DQB typing was performed for a total of 468 healthy controls and 282 patients with SSc allowing FLEDR and TRAELDT analyses. Results were stratified according to patient’s clinical subtypes and autoantibody status. Moreover, standardized HLA-DRß1 and DRß5 reverse transcriptase Taqman PCR assays were developed to quantify ß1 and ß5 mRNA in 20 subjects with HLA-DRB1*15 and/or DRB1*11 haplotypes. FLEDR motif is highly associated with diffuse SSc (χ2 = 28.4, p<10−6) and with anti-topoisomerase antibody (ATA) production (χ2 = 43.9, p<10−9) whereas TRAELDT association is weaker in both subgroups (χ2 = 7.2, p = 0.027 and χ2 = 14.6, p = 0.0007 respectively). Moreover, FLEDR motif- association among patients with diffuse SSc remains significant only in ATA subgroup. The risk to develop ATA positive SSc is higher with double dose FLEDR than single dose with respectively, adjusted standardised residuals of 5.1 and 2.6. The increase in FLEDR motif is mostly due to the higher frequency of HLA-DRB1*11 and DRB1*15 haplotypes. Furthermore, FLEDR is always carried by the most abundantly expressed ß chain: ß1 in HLA DRB1*11 haplotypes and ß5 in HLA-DRB1*15 haplotypes
