    Get PDF

This article is aimed at reflecting on healthy lifestyles in a university environment and how this affects the well-being and integral health of its community. The transition from adolescence to adulthood exposes the human being to different factors of risk, coexistence, healthy or unhealthy lifestyles and habits can affect your health, for this reason it is necessary to design strategies and lines of research to prevent and / or mitigate the negative effects of exposure to these risk factors in adolescents and adults who are part of a higher educational environment. In such a way that it is necessary to generate a society aware that in the university context there are a series of relationships that impact on the integral health of people and must be rethought from their daily actions and behaviors, from the curriculum and from institutional policies, seeking a transforming intention to generate healthy environments in society.

    Get PDF

They are required by researchers, instrument developers and pharmaceutical companies for instrumental quality control, methodological development and in the design and validation of devices, diagnostics and instrumentation. To-date there has been no clear consensus on the need and type of standards that should be available and different research groups and instrument manufacturers use different standard systems which significantly hinders comparative analysis. One of the major objectives of the Association of Resources for Biophysical Research in Europe (ARBRE) is to establish a common set of standard samples that can be used throughout the biophysics community and instrument developers. A survey was circulated among ARBRE members to ascertain the requirements of laboratories when using standard systems and the results are documented in this article. In summary, the major requirements are protein samples which are cheap, relatively small, stable and have different binding strengths. We have developed a panel of sdAb’s or ‘nanobodies’ against hen-egg white lysozyme with different binding strengths and suitable stability characteristics. Here we show the results of the survey, the selection procedure, validation and final selection of a panel of nanobody interaction standards

Strategi of linking of the university with the socio- economic context as a training student way

    Get PDF
Currently one of the fundamental processes in public and private universities is the linking process with the socioeconomic context as an important way to train professionals that society requires. While more efficient it is, greater advantages and benefits are for the different stakeholders, particularly students. The linking at the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (FIME) of the University of Nuevo León State (UANL) of Mexico with industry and society in general is a process that, since its conception in 1960, has served as a driver process for important achievements, although, as a dynamic and multifactorial process requires constant improvement. This improvement must be based on knowledge of its actual state. The aim of this paper is to analyze the current situation and perspective of that process in order to develop strategies that give advantage to the integral training that favors the interrelation of personal and professional training of the future engineers. The methodology used for this study combines methods and techniques of the empirical and theoretical levels such as: analysis, synthesis, historical and logical, and surveys of employers, teachers and students

This text aims to recuperate the participation of women in the constitution of the history of social work, giving visibility to the paths covered and the roles played by women. In order to do this, we analyze the case of the pioneers of the Universidade Federal Fluminense?s Niter?i School of Social Service (ESSN/UFF). The recuperation of their speeches, through oral history, was the methodological route. We begin the text revisiting the professional history and then discuss the need to remove from invisibility the protagonism of these women when building a profession. Deepening this dimension points to the importance of thinking about some issues, such as the history of women, the use of the gender dimension and feminisms in academic research, which we understand as a great challenge for the profession

Enemies with benefits: parasitic endoliths protect mussels against heat stress

    Get PDF
Positive and negative aspects of species interactions can be context dependant and strongly affected by environmental conditions. We tested the hypothesis that, during periods of intense heat stress, parasitic phototrophic endoliths that fatally degrade mollusc shells can benefit their mussel hosts. Endolithic infestation significantly reduced body temperatures of sun-exposed mussels and, during unusually extreme heat stress, parasitised individuals suffered lower mortality rates than nonparasitised hosts. This beneficial effect was related to the white discolouration caused by the excavation activity of endoliths. Under climate warming, species relationships may be drastically realigned and conditional benefits of phototrophic endolithic parasites may become more important than the costs of infestation

Pervasive mantle plume head heterogeneity: Evidence from the late Cretaceous Caribbean-Colombian oceanic plateau

In SW Colombia picritic pillow lavas and tuffs, as well as breccias composed of picritic clasts, occur interspersed with basalts of the Central Cordillera and represent accreted portions of the ∼90 Ma Colombian/Caribbean oceanic plateau (CCOP). We present new geochemical data for these picrites and high-MgO basalts from SW Colombia, along with new data from Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 15 drill sites. The 40Ar/39Ar ages for the CCOP in the Central Colombian Cordillera range from 87 to 93 Ma. Both SW Colombia picrites and Leg 15 basalts are compositionally diverse and range from reasonably enriched ((La/Nd)n > 1 and (εNd)i +8.0). Nb/Y and Zr/Y systematics suggest that the depleted component is not depleted MORB mantle, but is an intrinsic part of the plume. The bulk of the CCOP compositions can be explained by mixing between this depleted mantle and a HIMU component. However, radiogenic isotope systematics indicate the presence of an EM2 (or possibly EM1) component within the plume. Mantle melt modeling suggests that the enriched magma types are the product of deeper, small degree melting of a pervasively heterogeneous plume comprising a refractory matrix with enriched streaks/blobs, whereas shallower, more extensive melting, results in the formation of relatively depleted magmas
