SEQUENTIAL INDUCTION OF CHIRALITY IN POLY(PHENYLACETYLENE)S

Several hierarchical levels of chirality have been detected in functionalized poly(phenylacetylene)s (PPA).1 In this work we have studied the chirality induction throughout these levels in PPA functionalized with phenylglycine methyl ester groups, Fig. 1.2 These pendant groups force the PPA chain to lose its planar all-transoid shape to form helical structures. The chiral seed of the pendants, [(R)- or (S)-], dictates the preferent handedness of the helices, both the internal polyacetylene helical covalent backbone and the external helix formed by the side pendants which forms a complementary helix or counter-helix. In this work, we afford a full assessment of the interconnection between stereocenter and helix sources of chirality and the action of these polymers as chiral templates of other supra-molecular structures with inherited chiral properties. We then used VCD spectroscoy to demonstrate the chiral induction from the stereogenic centers to the backbone helix and from this to the pendant helix, which are largely promoted by two mechanisms: steric effects and hydrogen bonding. In addition, the VCD spectra supported that the helical setup of the pendants induces the solvent DMSO molecules to adopt a solvation helix around the polymer, thus proving how an achiral solvent becomes chirally organized owing to the template effect of the covalent polymer helices. A similar effect was observed in DMSO solutions of the monomeric units. Interestingly, this resulted in opposite helical sense to the one observed in the polymer with identical enantiomeric form.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech

Background: We describe a case of traumatic ocular endophthalmitis caused by Nocardia kruczakiae after vegetable trauma in an immunocompetent child. Findings: A 5-year-old boy suffered from a trauma with a palm tree leaflet. Two months later, he was diagnosed with traumatic infectious uveitis and intumescent cataract with anterior capsule rupture. Intensive treatment with systemic and topical vancomycin, ceftazidime and methylprednisolone began. After 1 month, he underwent phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation (IOL). After some episodes of reactivation, he was diagnosed with traumatic nocardial endophthalmitis from aqueous humour samples. Several operations and specific antibiotic therapy resolved the infection. Conclusions: In cases of traumatic endophthalmitis and several recurrences, it is extremely useful to make an etiologic diagnosis in order to treat the patient with specific antibiotics. This research was supported by grant MPY 1446/11-TE from the Fondo de Investigaciones Sanitarias, Instituto de Salud Carlos III.S

This is the Accepted Manuscript version of a Published Work that appeared in final form in The Journal of the Physical Chemistry Letters, Copyright © 2018 American Chemical Society after peer review and technical edityng by the publisher. To access the final edited and published work see: https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.jpclett.8b00519Several steps of chiral induction have been detected in poly(phenylacetylene)s among their different hierarchical levels of chirality by vibrational circular dichroism, namely, (i) from the stereogenic centers to the innermost polyacetylene helical covalent backbone (helixint), (ii) from this to the external helix (helixext) formed by the side phenyl pendants that form a complementary helix or counter-helix, and (iii) from this pendant helix to the helical solvation sphere (helixsolv.), the last one being observed along this work. The pendant to polyene backbone chiral induction determines the helical structure adopted by the polymer and therefore the solvation helix. This helical structure is promoted by two mechanisms: steric effects and hydrogen bonding. An important finding concerns the demonstration by VCD of how an achiral solvent becomes chirally organized owing to the template effect of the covalent polymer helices, an effect that is silent to other structural techniques such as ECD or AFM and that hence significantly broadens the scope of these previous analysesFinancial support from Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación [CTQ2014-61470-EXP, CTQ2015- 69391-P, FPI (R. Learning is a subject of constant concern for all those dedicated to this activity, where there are different paradigmatic approaches. The objective of this work is to assess the different types of learning associated with current contexts in order to improve the teaching-learning process. The fundamental methods used have been, from the theoretical, the logical historical and the synthetic analytic; and from empyrean, observation and analysis of documents. The main results are associated with the description of the most useful methods in these times, the psychological current that underlies each one of them, their complementary elements and adaptations (whether virtual or face-to-face) to the generation that today is in the classrooms. With the assessment of the different learning concepts, a tool has been provided to support the work of teachers of these timesEl aprendizaje es un tema de constate preocupación para todos los dedicados a esta actividad, donde existen diferentes enfoques paradigmáticos.

Temperature-Dependent Anisotropic Refractive Index in β-Ga2O3: Application in Interferometric Thermometers

An accurate knowledge of the optical properties of β-Ga2O3 is key to developing the full potential of this oxide for photonics applications. In particular, the dependence of these properties on temperature is still being studied. Optical micro- and nanocavities are promising for a wide range of applications. They can be created within microwires and nanowires via distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR), i.e., periodic patterns of the refractive index in dielectric materials, acting as tunable mirrors. In this work, the effect of temperature on the anisotropic refractive index of β-Ga2O3 n(λ,T) was analyzed with ellipsometry in a bulk crystal, and temperature-dependent dispersion relations were obtained, with them being fitted to Sellmeier formalism in the visible range. Micro-photoluminescence (μ-PL) spectroscopy of microcavities that developed within Cr-doped β-Ga2O3 nanowires shows the characteristic thermal shift of red–infrared Fabry–Perot optical resonances when excited with different laser powers. The origin of this shift is mainly related to the variation in the temperature of the refractive index. A comparison of these two experimental results was performed by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations, considering the exact morphology of the wires and the temperature-dependent, anisotropic refractive index. The shifts caused by temperature variations observed by μ-PL are similar, though slightly larger than those obtained with FDTD when implementing the n(λ,T) obtained with ellipsometry. The thermo-optic coefficient was calculated. This work was supported by MICINN projects (RTI2018-097195-B-I00, RTI2018-096918-B-C41, PID2021-122562NB-I00 and PID2021-123190OB-I00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/FEDER, UE). Background: The danger of disappearance of the different unprotected genotypes in the Andean highlands of Ecuador forces us to study and propose conservation measures to maintain that biological richness that has enormous prospects for the feeding of humanity. The objective of the study was to compare the sizes and weights of the litters until the weaning of native Ecuadorian guinea pigs from the provinces of Azuay, Cañar and the improved line of Peru. Methods: The study was carried out in the experimental farm of Irquis of the Faculty of Agropecific Sciences of the University of Cuenca. The database was constructed with the records of breeders prospective among the farmers of the provinces of Azuay and Cañar, taking as a reference the phenotypic characteristics. Results: No significant differences were proved for the month of parturition or for the number of births or the genotype in the size of the litter at weaning. The Azuay did not differ from Peru in the size of the litter at birth (3.1 and 3.2 respectively). This one exceeded in the weight of the litter at birth and at weaning with 432 and 837 g at 313 and 570 g of Azuay, which does not differ from the Cañar genotype. Conclusions: The Creole genotypes of Azuay and Cañar showed inferiority in the traits related to birth weight and mortality compared to Peru. The Azuay does not differ from Peru or in litter size at birth or at weaning, this genotype manifested a potential that can be developed.
