Carbon partitioning and export in transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana with altered capacity for sucrose synthesis grown at low temperature: a role for metabolite transporters
We investigated the role of metabolite transporters in cold acclimation by comparing the responses of wild-type (WT) Arabidopsis thaliana (Heynh.) with that of transgenic plants over-expressing sucrose-phosphate synthase (SPSox) or with that of antisense repression of cytosolic fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (FBPas). Plants were grown at 23 degrees C and then shifted to 5 degrees C. We compared the leaves shifted to 5 degrees C for 3 and 10 d with new leaves that developed at 5 degrees C with control leaves on plants at 23 degrees C. At 23 degrees C, ectopic expression of SPS resulted in 30% more carbon being fixed per day and an increase in sucrose export from source leaves. This increase in fixation and export was supported by increased expression of the plastidic triose-phosphate transporter AtTPT and, to a lesser extent, the high-affinity Suc transporter AtSUC1. The improved photosynthetic performance of the SPSox plants was maintained after they were shifted to 5 degrees C and this was associated with further increases in AtSUC1 expression but with a strong repression of AtTPT mRNA abundance. Similar responses were shown by WT plants during acclimation to low temperature and this response was attenuated in the low sucrose producing FBPas plants. These data suggest that a key element in recovering flux through carbohydrate metabolism in the cold is to control the partitioning of metabolites between the chloroplast and the cytosol, and Arabidopsis modulates the expression of AtTPT to maintain balanced carbon flow. Arabidopsis also up-regulates the expression of AtSUC1, and to lesser extent AtSUC2, as down-stream components facilitate sucrose transport in leaves that develop at low temperatures.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Tetrathiafulvalene Porphyrins
Four tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)-annulated porphyrins 1–4 were synthesized and characterized. All contain a tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) core onto which four, two, or one TTF subunits were annulated. Absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic studies together with electrochemical investigations reveal that interactions between the porphyrin system and the annulated TTF units take place in solution. The annulation of one or more TTF units to the porphyrin core has a profound effect on the reduction potentials associated with this latter framework, with positive shifts in the range of 0.105 to 0.355 V and 0.200 to 0.370 V for the first and second reduction potential, respectively, compared to the corresponding processes in the model compound TPP, 18. The redox potentials for the first oxidation of the TTF units are considerably shifted in 4 (ΔEox1=+0.285 V) and 2 (ΔEox1=−0.140 V), whereas for 1 and 3 these potentials remain within the region expected for a normal TTF unit. Considerable changes in the second oxidation potential associated with the TTF subunits were seen for 2 (ΔEox1=−0.085) and 3 (ΔEox1=−0.175). The emission spectra of 1–4 revealed that the porphyrin fluorescence is almost quenched in the neutral state of the TTF-annulated porphyrins, a finding that is consistent with substantial electron transfer taking place from the TTF subunits to the porphyrin core. Entropy and Quantum Kolmogorov Complexity: A Quantum Brudno's Theorem
In classical information theory, entropy rate and Kolmogorov complexity per
symbol are related by a theorem of Brudno. In this paper, we prove a quantum
version of this theorem, connecting the von Neumann entropy rate and two
notions of quantum Kolmogorov complexity, both based on the shortest qubit
descriptions of qubit strings that, run by a universal quantum Turing machine,

Excess mortality among the elderly in 12 European countries, February and March 2012
In February and March 2012, excess deaths among the elderly have been observed in 12 European countries that carry out weekly monitoring of all-cause mortality. These preliminary data indicate that the impact of influenza in Europe differs from the recent pandemic and post-pandemic seasons. The current excess mortality among the elderly may be related to the return of influenza A(H3N2) virus, potentially with added effects of a cold snap
Dysfunction of the Heteromeric KV7.3/KV7.5 Potassium Channel is Associated with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Heterozygous mutations in the KCNQ3 gene on chromosome 8q24 encoding the voltage-gated potassium channel KV7.3 subunit have previously been associated with rolandic epilepsy and idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) including benign neonatal convulsions. We identified a de novo t(3;8) (q21;q24) translocation truncating KCNQ3 in a boy with childhood autism. In addition, we identified a c.1720C > T [p.P574S] nucleotide change in three unrelated individuals with childhood autism and no history of convulsions. This nucleotide change was previously reported in patients with rolandic epilepsy or IGE and has now been annotated as a very rare SNP (rs74582884) in dbSNP. The p.P574S KV7.3 variant significantly reduced potassium current amplitude in Xenopus laevis oocytes when co-expressed with KV7.5 but not with KV7.2 or KV7.4. The nucleotide change did not affect trafficking of heteromeric mutant KV7.3/2, KV7.3/4, or KV7.3/5 channels in HEK 293 cells or primary rat hippocampal neurons. Our results suggest that dysfunction of the heteromeric KV7.3/5 channel is implicated in the pathogenesis of some forms of autism spectrum disorders, epilepsy, and possibly other psychiatric disorders and therefore, KCNQ3 and KCNQ5 are suggested as candidate genes for these disorders
Progress in the determination of the cross section
Improving previous calculations, we compute the cross section using QCD sum rules. Our sum rules for the , , and hadronic
matrix elements are constructed by using vaccum-pion correlation functions, and
we work up to twist-4 in the soft-pion limit. Our results suggest that, using
meson exchange models is perfectly acceptable, provided that they include form
factors and that they respect chiral symmetry. After doing a thermal average we

Gaussian Tunneling Model of c-Axis Twist Josephson Junctions
We calculate the critical current density for c-axis Josephson
tunneling between identical high temperature superconductors twisted an angle
about the c-axis. We model the tunneling matrix element squared as a
Gaussian in the change of wavevector q parallel to the junction, . The
obtained for the s- and extended-s-wave order parameters (OP's) are consistent
with the BiSrCaCuO data of Li {\it et al.}, but only
for strongly incoherent tunneling, . A -wave OP
is always inconsistent with the data. In addition, we show that the apparent
conventional sum rule violation observed by Basov et al. might be
understandable in terms of incoherent c-axis tunneling, provided that the OP is

The Uses of Conformal Symmetry in QCD
The Lagrangian of Quantum Chromodynamics is invariant under conformal
transformations. Although this symmetry is broken by quantum corrections, it
has important consequences for strong interactions at short distances and
