Adapting RRI public engagement indicators to the Spanish scientific and innovation context: a participatory methodology based on AHP and content analysis
The paradigm proposed by Responsible Research and Innovation in the European Commission policy discourse identifies Public Engagement as a key area for exchange and dialogue among multiple actors following an inclusive and participatory process. Two definite set of indicators have already arisen at European level to monitor Public Engagement activities in the Science and Innovation realm. Our study aims to propose a deliberative participatory process, which involves selected stakeholders, for the adaptation of the European indicators to the specific Spanish scientific and innovation context. The methodological procedure is of exploratory nature and will be based in a combination of, on the one hand, qualitative content analysis techniques for the in-depth study of the deliberative process and the generation of indicators; and, on the other hand, a multi-criteria decision analysis technique such as the Analytic Hierarchy Process for the prioritization of the indicators. The discussion will focus on the procedure to articulate stakeholders' values and use them as the basis for creating a context-based improved list of indicators. Two types of research questions arise: (i) Is the proposed methodology adequate for the adaptation of the European indicators to the Spanish context? (ii) What are the main indicators to monitor and to expand reflection on the public engagement in the Spanish science and innovation
Detection of honey adulteration by conventional and real-time PCR
[EN] This work applies both conventional and real-time PCR DNA amplification techniques for detecting and quantifying rice molasses in honey. Different levels of adulteration were simulated (1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50%) using commercial rice molasses. Among the different specific genes of rice tested by PCR, the PLD1 primer was the most effective. This allowed the visualization in agarose gel of this type of adulterant up to 5-20%. Moreover, by means of real-time PCR it was possible to distinguish the different levels of rice DNA, and therefore the percentage of adulteration (1-50%). A standard curve built with the DNA serial dilutions of rice genomic DNA concentrations showed that the quantification level was between 2-5%. These results offer compelling evidence that DNA techniques could be useful not only for the detection of adulterations of honey with rice molasses but also for the quantification of levels lower than those of conventional techniques. This study is part of part of the projects funded by the "Agencia Estatal de Investigacion" (AGL2016-77702-R) and by the "Generalitat Valenciana" (AICO/2015/104) of Spain, for which the authors are grateful.Sobrino-Gregorio, L.; Vilanova Navarro, S.; Prohens Tomás, J.; Escriche Roberto, MI. White matter injury restoration after stem cell administration in subcortical ischemic stroke
Introduction: Despite its high incidence, nerve fiber (axon and myelin) damage after cerebral infarct has not yet
been extensively investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate white matter repair after adipose-derived
mesenchymal stem cell (ADMSC) administration in an experimental model of subcortical stroke. Furthermore, we
aimed to analyze the ADMSC secretome and whether this could be implicated in this repair function.
Methods: An animal model of subcortical ischemic stroke with white matter affectation was induced in rats by
injection of endothelin-1. At 24 hours, 2 × 106 ADMSC were administered intravenously to the treatment group.
Functional evaluation, lesion size, fiber tract integrity, cell death, proliferation, white matter repair markers (Olig-2,
NF, and MBP) and NogoA were all studied after sacrifice (7 days and 28 days). ADMSC migration and implantation
in the brain as well as proteomics analysis and functions of the secretome were also analyzed.
Results: Neither ADMSC migration nor implantation to the brain was observed after ADMSC administration. In
contrast, ADMSC implantation was detected in peripheral organs. The treatment group showed a smaller functional
deficit, smaller lesion area, less cell death, more oligodendrocyte proliferation, more white matter connectivity and
higher amounts of myelin formation. The treated animals also showed higher levels of white matter-associated
markers in the injured area than the control group. Proteomics analysis of the ADMSC secretome identified 2,416
proteins, not all of them previously described to be involved in brain plasticity.
Conclusions: White matter integrity in subcortical stroke is in part restored by ADMSC treatment; this is mediated
by repair molecular factors implicated in axonal sprouting, remyelination and oligodendrogenesis. These findings
are associated with improved functional recovery after strokeThis study was supported by research grants PS12/01754, PI11/00909 and

The Chub Mackerel (Scomber Colias) in the Atlantic Spanish Waters (ICES Divisions 8.c and 9.a): Biological, fishery and survey data
Atlantic chub mackerel (Scomber colias , Gmelin, 1978) is a middle-sized pelagic fish distributed in warm and temperate Northeast Atlantic waters. The bulk of the catches takes place in north western waters of Africa, but landing are significantly increased in the most recent years in the Iberian Peninsula, resulting a new target species for both Portuguese and Spanish purse seiner fleets which partially replaces the important drop of sardine landings in both countries.
Given this increasing importance and the lack, for the time being, of any scientific assessment, nor management plan and in order to update the available biological and catch information on this specie in Spanish Atlantic waters, this paper working document compile, review and analyze the existing data of biology, fisheries, and surveys to further enhance knowledge on chub mackerel in Atlantic Iberian waters (ICES Subdivisions 9.a South & North and Division 8.c), specifically: (i) stock structure, (ii) spatial distribution (iii) growth and reproduction and (iv) fisheries exploitation.
This analysis suggests an increasing trend in Atlantic waters (9a) in both spatial distribution and abundance, mainly due to the strength of the 2015 and 2016 cohorts. This area, besides, could be considered as a nursery area while the Cantabrian Sea (8c) is rather main spawning area. The increase of such availability is also discussed within the frame of the North East Atlantic warming
Estudio longitudinal de lesiones deportivas en practicantes de gimnasia aeróbica de competición
Introduction:
Aerobic gymnastics, since its membership in the International Gymnastics Federation, has undergone changes in its regulations.
Objective:
To analyze the injuries found in Spanish aerobic gymnastics athletes during different editions of the Code of Points.
Methods:
A descriptive, longitudinal and compara-tive study was carried out on the epidemiology of injuries in aerobic gymnastics published during different editions of the Code of Points.
Results:
It highlights that the number of injuries decreased from 156 to 38 last year. This decline has been related to the restriction on the number of difficulties in the exercise and the number of elements to be performed on the floor. However, they have increased the number and value of the difficulties.
Conclusions:
Therefore, it is concluded that the changes made in the regulations are intended to safeguard the health of athletes and ensure that competition develops at its best artistic and technical aspect.

Impact of late presentation of HIV infection on short-, mid- and long-term mortality and causes of death in a multicenter national cohort: 2004–2013
SummaryObjectivesTo analyze the impact of late presentation (LP) on overall mortality and causes of death and describe LP trends and risk factors (2004–2013).MethodsCox models and logistic regression were used to analyze data from a nation-wide cohort in Spain. LP is defined as being diagnosed when CD4 < 350 cells/ml or AIDS.ResultsOf 7165 new HIV diagnoses, 46.9% (CI95%:45.7–48.0) were LP, 240 patients died.First-year mortality was the highest (aHRLP.vs.nLP = 10.3[CI95%:5.5–19.3]); between 1 and 4 years post-diagnosis, aHRLP.vs.nLP = 1.9(1.2–3.0); and >4 years, aHRLP.vs.nLP = 1.5(0.7–3.1).First-year's main cause of death was HIV/AIDS (73%); and malignancies among those surviving >4 years (32%). HIV/AIDS-related deaths were more likely in LP (59.2% vs. 25.0%; p < 0.001). LP declined from 55.9% (2004–05) to 39.4% (2012–13), and reduced in 46.1% in men who have sex with men (MSM) and 37.6% in heterosexual men, but increased in 22.6% in heterosexual women.Factors associated with LP: sex (ORMEN.vs.WOMEN = 1.4[1.2–1.7]); age (OR31–40.vs.<30 = 1.6[1.4–1.8], OR41–50.vs.<30 = 2.2[1.8–2.6], OR>50.vs.<30 = 3.6[2.9–4.4]); behavior (ORInjectedDrugUse.vs.MSM = 2.8[2.0–3.8]; ORHeterosexual.vs.MSM = 2.2[1.7–3.0]); education (ORPrimaryEducation.vs.University = 1.5[1.1–2.0], ORLowerSecondary.vs.University = 1.3[1.1–1.5]); and geographical origin (ORSub-Saharan.vs.Spain = 1.6[1.3–2.0], ORLatin-American.vs.Spain = 1.4[1.2–1.8]).ConclusionsLP is associated with higher mortality, especially short-term- and HIV/AIDS-related mortality. Mid-term-, but not long-term mortality, remained also higher in LP than nLP. LP decreased in MSM and heterosexual men, not in heterosexual women. The groups most affected by LP are low educated, non-Spanish and heterosexual women
Heterogeneity in outcomes of treated HIV-positive patients in Europe and North America: relation with patient and cohort characteristics
Background HIV cohort collaborations, which pool data from diverse patient cohorts, have provided key insights into outcomes of antiretroviral therapy (ART). However, the extent of, and reasons for, between-cohort heterogeneity in rates of AIDS and mortality are unclear. Methods We obtained data on adult HIV-positive patients who started ART from 1998 without a previous AIDS diagnosis from 17 cohorts in North America and Europe. Patients were followed up from 1 month to 2 years after starting ART. We examined between-cohort heterogeneity in crude and adjusted (age, sex, HIV transmission risk, year, CD4 count and HIV-1 RNA at start of ART) rates of AIDS and mortality using random-effects meta-analysis and meta-regression. Results During 61 520 person-years, 754/38 706 (1.9%) patients died and 1890 (4.9%) progressed to AIDS. Between-cohort variance in mortality rates was reduced from 0.84 to 0.24 (0.73 to 0.28 for AIDS rates) after adjustment for patient characteristics. Adjusted mortality rates were inversely associated with cohorts' estimated completeness of death ascertainment [excellent: 96-100%, good: 90-95%, average: 75-89%; mortality rate ratio 0.66 (95% confidence interval 0.46-0.94) per category]. Mortality rate ratios comparing Europe with North America were 0.42 (0.31-0.57) before and 0.47 (0.30-0.73) after adjusting for completeness of ascertainment. Conclusions Heterogeneity between settings in outcomes of HIV treatment has implications for collaborative analyses, policy and clinical care. Estimated mortality rates may require adjustment for completeness of ascertainment. Higher mortality rate in North American, compared with European, cohorts was not fully explained by completeness of ascertainment and may be because of the inclusion of more socially marginalized patients with higher mortality ris
Siglo Cero. 43 (243): 7-28.)
