House-screening (HS) using fixed-aluminium frames to reduce the risk of indoor infestation with Aedes aegypti mosquitoes as well as the risk of Aedes-transmitted diseases in communities living in endemic areas. However, the success of this approach has been hindered by the elevated cost of the aluminium-based materials as well as their professional installation, which cannot be afforded by people living under vulnerable conditions. Cost-saving strategies such as the use of low-cost materials including wood, PVC, and Velcro are within the list of HS options available and offered by HS businesses and/or Do-it-yourself (DIY) packages verbi gratia ready-made and ready-to-install mosquito-screens. Here, we evaluated the efficacy of low-cost frames constructed with different materials to protect against Ae. aegypti indoor infestation using experimental huts. The efficacy of protection in preventing female mosquito passing inside the huts of any of the options of frames was high (>93%) compared to the control with no-screen. People’s perceptions on the different materials showed the most “popular” alternative was the frame made of wood (62%). All the prototype-frames of HS made of different materials were effective at blocking Ae. aegypti entering-mosquitoes particularly, low-cost options like magnets and Velcro

FSR 1716: A New Milky Way Globular Cluster Confirmed Using VVV RR Lyrae Stars

We use deep multi-epoch near-IR images of the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) Survey to search for RR Lyrae stars toward the Southern Galactic plane. Here, we report the discovery of a group of RR Lyrae stars close together in VVV tile d025. Inspection of the VVV images and PSF photometry reveals that most of these stars are likely to belong to a globular cluster that matches the position of the previously known star cluster FSR 1716. The stellar density map of the field yields a >100? detection for this candidate globular cluster that is centered at equatorial coordinates R.A. J2000 = 16:10:30.0, decl. J2000 = ?53:44:56 and galactic coordinates l = 329.77812, b = ?1.59227. The color–magnitude diagram of this object reveals a well-populated red giant branch, with a prominent red clump at K s = 13.35 ± 0.05, and J ? K s = 1.30 ± 0.05. We present the cluster RR Lyrae positions, magnitudes, colors, periods, and amplitudes. The presence of RR Lyrae indicates an old globular cluster, with an age >10 Gyr. We classify this object as an Oosterhoff type I globular cluster, based on the mean period of its RR Lyrae type ab, P=0.540\langle P\rangle =0.540 days, and argue that this is a relatively metal-poor cluster with [Fe/H] = ?1.5 ± 0.4 dex. The mean extinction and reddening for this cluster are AKs=0.38±0.02{A}_{{K}_{s}}=0.38\pm 0.02 and E(J ? K s ) = 0.72 ± 0.02 mag, respectively, as measured from the RR Lyrae colors and the near-IR color–magnitude diagram. We also measure the cluster distance using the RR Lyrae type ab stars. The cluster mean distance modulus is (m ? M)0 = 14.38 ± 0.03 mag, implying a distance D = 7.5 ± 0.2 kpc and a Galactocentric distance R G = 4.3 kpc

Pharmacological management of antifungal agents in pulmonary aspergillosis: an updated review

    No full text
Introduction: Aspergillus may cause different types of lung infections: invasive, chronic pulmonary or allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis. Pharmacological management with antifungals poses as a challenge. Patients diagnosed with pulmonary aspergillosis are complex, as well as the problems associated with antifungal agents. Areas covered: This article reviews the pharmacology of antifungal agents in development and currently used to treat pulmonary aspergillosis, including the mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, dosing, therapeutic drug monitoring and safety. Recommendations to manage situations that arise in daily clinical practice are provided. A literature search of PubMed was conducted on November 15th, 2020 and updated on March 30th, 2021. Expert opinion: Recent and relevant developments in the treatment of pulmonary aspergillosis have taken place. Novel antifungals with new mechanisms of action that extend antifungal spectrum and improve pharmacokinetic-related aspects, drug-drug interactions and safety are under current study. For those antifungals already marketed, new data related to pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, dose adjustments in special situations, therapeutic drug monitoring and safety are available. To maximize efficacy and reduce the risk of associated toxicities, it is essential to choose the most appropriate antifungal; optimize its dose, interval, route of administration and length of treatment; and prevent side effects

Background: The empirical evidence accumulated on the effi cacy, effectiveness, and effi ciency of psychotherapeutic treatments in children and adolescents calls for an update. The main goal of this paper objective was to carry out a selective review of empirically supported psychological treatments for a variety of common psychological disorders and problems in childhood and adolescence. Method: A review was carried out of the psychological treatments for different psychological disorders and problems in socialemotional or behavioral adjustment in the child-adolescent population according to the Spanish National Health System (Clinical Practice Guidelines) levels of evidence and degrees of recommendation. Results: The fi ndings suggest that psychological treatments have empirical support for addressing a wide range of psychological problems in these developmental stages. The degree of empirical support ranges from low to high depending on the phenomenon analyzed. The review suggests unequal progress in the different fi elds of intervention. Conclusions: From this update, psychologists will be able to make informed decisions when implementing those empirically supported treatments to address the problems that occur in childhood and adolescence.
