Passive Aeroelastic Tailored Wing Modal Test Using the Fixed Base Correction Method
In modal testing and finite element model correlation, analysts desire modal results using free-free or rigid boundary conditions to ease comparisons of test versus analytical data. It is often expensive both in cost and schedule to build and test with boundary conditions that replicate the free-free or rigid boundaries. Static test fixtures for load testing are often large, heavy, and unyielding, but do not provide adequate boundaries for modal tests because they are dynamically too flexible and often contain natural frequencies within the frequency range of interest of the test article. Dynamic coupling between the test article and test fixture complicates the model updating process because significant effort is required to model the test fixture and boundary conditions in addition to the test article. If there were a way to correct the modal results for fixture coupling, then setups used for other structural testing could be adequate for modal testing. In the case described in this paper, a partial static loads testing setup was used, which allowed significant schedule and cost savings by eliminating a unique setup for a modal test. A fixed base correction technique was investigated during modal testing of a flexible wing cantilevered from part of a static test fixture. The technique was successfully used to measure the wing modes de-coupled from the dynamically active test fixture. The technique is promising for future aircraft applications, but more research is needed
Applying Grover's algorithm to AES: quantum resource estimates
We present quantum circuits to implement an exhaustive key search for the
Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and analyze the quantum resources required
to carry out such an attack. We consider the overall circuit size, the number
of qubits, and the circuit depth as measures for the cost of the presented
quantum algorithms. Throughout, we focus on Clifford gates as the
underlying fault-tolerant logical quantum gate set. In particular, for all
three variants of AES (key size 128, 192, and 256 bit) that are standardized in
FIPS-PUB 197, we establish precise bounds for the number of qubits and the
number of elementary logical quantum gates that are needed to implement

Reform Is Necessary: An Analysis of the United States Healthcare System after the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act with Comparison to South Africa’s Pluralistic Healthcare System
The structural and functional complexity of the United States healthcare system affects its citizens. As such, the healthcare system has caused both economic and social issues to arise, which have demanded the need for healthcare reform. The two major issues in the healthcare system which are disadvantageous to citizens are limited accessibility to healthcare and its cost; both of which are disadvantageous to citizens. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), was passed in order to combat these issues within the healthcare system, however, its impacts did not produce a comprehensive solution. Since the enactment of PPACA there have been positive changes, but healthcare costs continue to rise and the United States still ranks lower than other developed nations in healthcare quality. The country of South Africa has a pluralistic healthcare system like the United States, and it is currently undergoing a healthcare system reform. Due to this similarity, the United States can study the impacts of South Africa’s healthcare reform in order to determine that healthcare reform is necessary, and to discover which reforms are essential to construct a thriving healthcare system. The current United States healthcare system is unsustainable and further healthcare reform is necessary to ensure accessibility to quality healthcare for all citizens at an affordable cost

The purpose of this dissertation is to provide a guide to the performance and musical understanding of the role of Zerbinetta from the 1916 version of Richard Strauss’s opera Ariadne auf Naxos. As one of the titans of the repertoire for high soprano, the role requires considerable study. This dissertation addresses the sizeable singing obligation and technical difficulties of the role, Zerbinetta’s musical requirements, character traits, and material pertinent to historical and dramatic matter. In doing so, it provides the performer with a well-rounded foundation on which to base her interpretation of the character
Effects of teaching intensity on sixth-grade students' general music achievements and attitudes
Understanding, delineating, and clarifying teaching behaviors contributing to desired student musical outcomes is an important concern for researchers, teachers, and teacher educators. The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of teaching intensity behaviors on sixth-grade students' general music achievement, music attitudes, and recorder performance. Subjects' gender and music background also were examined as independent variables. Two intact classes of sixth-grade general music students served as subjects. One group of twelve males and ten females (n = 22) received an operationally defined high teaching intensity treatment; nine males and twelve females in the second group (n = 21) experienced a low teaching intensity treatment. Prior to treatment, subjects' general music achievement, music attitudes, and music background were assessed using the researcher-designed Music Achievement Test, Music Attitudes Profile, and Music Background Questionnaire. During the eleven-day treatment period, subjects received 45 minutes of general music instruction focusing on developing music reading and soprano recorder performance skills. To determine effects of instructional treatment, gender, and music background, the Music Achievement Test, Music Attitudes Profile, and Recorder Performance Test were administered following the treatment period

Comparisons were made on the following factors: (1) family background; (2) school factors including academic grade average, intelligence scores, number of good books read, attendance, participation in extra-curricular activities, and significant comments by former teachers; and (3) social and personal assets
Mass extinctions drove increased global faunal cosmopolitanism on the supercontinent Pangaea
Mass extinctions have profoundly impacted the evolution of life through not only reducing taxonomic diversity but also reshaping ecosystems and biogeographic patterns. In particular, they are considered to have driven increased biogeographic cosmopolitanism, but quantitative tests of this hypothesis are rare and have not explicitly incorporated information on evolutionary relationships. Here we quantify faunal cosmopolitanism using a phylogenetic network approach for 891 terrestrial vertebrate species spanning the late Permian through Early Jurassic. This key interval witnessed the Permian–Triassic and Triassic–Jurassic mass extinctions, the onset of fragmentation of the supercontinent Pangaea, and the origins of dinosaurs and many modern vertebrate groups. Our results recover significant increases in global faunal cosmopolitanism following both mass extinctions, driven mainly by new, widespread taxa, leading to homogenous ‘disaster faunas’. Cosmopolitanism subsequently declines in post-recovery communities. These shared patterns in both biotic crises suggest that mass extinctions have predictable influences on animal distribution and may shed light on biodiversity loss in extant ecosystems
Meta-analysis of the detection of plant pigment concentrations using hyperspectral remotely sensed data
Passive optical hyperspectral remote sensing of plant pigments offers potential for understanding plant ecophysiological processes across a range of spatial scales. Following a number of decades of research in this field, this paper undertakes a systematic meta-analysis of 85 articles to determine whether passive optical hyperspectral remote sensing techniques are sufficiently well developed to quantify individual plant pigments, which operational solutions are available for wider plant science and the areas which now require greater focus. The findings indicate that predictive relationships are strong for all pigments at the leaf scale but these decrease and become more variable across pigment types at the canopy and landscape scales. At leaf scale it is clear that specific sets of optimal wavelengths can be recommended for operational methodologies: total chlorophyll and chlorophyll a quantification is based on reflectance in the green (550–560nm) and red edge (680–750nm) regions; chlorophyll b on the red, (630–660nm), red edge (670–710nm) and the near-infrared (800–810nm); carotenoids on the 500–580nm region; and anthocyanins on the green (550–560nm), red edge (700–710nm) and near-infrared (780–790nm). For total chlorophyll the optimal wavelengths are valid across canopy and landscape scales and there is some evidence that the same applies for chlorophyll a
Noninvasive optical inhibition with a red-shifted microbial rhodopsin
Optogenetic inhibition of the electrical activity of neurons enables the causal assessment of their contributions to brain functions. Red light penetrates deeper into tissue than other visible wavelengths. We present a red-shifted cruxhalorhodopsin, Jaws, derived from Haloarcula (Halobacterium) salinarum (strain Shark) and engineered to result in red light–induced photocurrents three times those of earlier silencers. Jaws exhibits robust inhibition of sensory-evoked neural activity in the cortex and results in strong light responses when used in retinas of retinitis pigmentosa model mice. We also demonstrate that Jaws can noninvasively mediate transcranial optical inhibition of neurons deep in the brains of awake mice. The noninvasive optogenetic inhibition opened up by Jaws enables a variety of important neuroscience experiments and offers a powerful general-use chloride pump for basic and applied neuroscience.McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT (Razin Fellowship)United States. Racism as a determinant of health: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Despite a growing body of epidemiological evidence in recent years documenting the health impacts of racism, the cumulative evidence base has yet to be synthesized in a comprehensive meta-analysis focused specifically on racism as a determinant of health. This meta-analysis reviewed the literature focusing on the relationship between reported racism and mental and physical health outcomes. Data from 293 studies reported in 333 articles published between 1983 and 2013, and conducted predominately in the U.S., were analysed using random effects models and mean weighted effect sizes. Racism was associated with poorer mental health (negative mental health: r = -.23, 95% CI [-.24,-.21], k = 227; positive mental health: r = -.13, 95% CI [-.16,-.10], k = 113), including depression, anxiety, psychological stress and various other outcomes. Racism was also associated with poorer general health (r = -.13 (95% CI [-.18,-.09], k = 30), and poorer physical health (r = -.09, 95% CI [-.12,-.06], k = 50). Moderation effects were found for some outcomes with regard to study and exposure characteristics. Effect sizes of racism on mental health were stronger in cross-sectional compared with longitudinal data and in non-representative samples compared with representative samples. Age, sex, birthplace and education level did not moderate the effects of racism on health. Ethnicity significantly moderated the effect of racism on negative mental health and physical health: the association between racism and negative mental health was significantly stronger for Asian American and Latino(a) American participants compared with African American participants, and the association between racism and physical health was significantly stronger for Latino(a) American participants compared with African American participants.<br /
