    Examining sex differences in knee pain: the Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study

    SummaryObjectiveTo determine whether women experience greater knee pain severity than men at equivalent levels of radiographic knee osteoarthritis (OA).Design and methodsA cross-sectional analysis of 2712 individuals (60% women) without knee replacement or a recent steroid injection. Sex differences in pain severity at each Kellgren–Lawrence (KL) grade were assessed by knee using visual analog scale (VAS) scale and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) with and without adjustment for age, analgesic use, Body mass index (BMI), clinic site, comorbid conditions, depression score, education, race, and widespread pain (WSP) using generalized estimating equations. Effect sizes (Cohen's d) were also calculated. Analyses were repeated in those with and without patellofemoral OA (PFOA).ResultsWomen reported higher VAS pain at all KL grades in unadjusted analyses (d = 0.21–0.31, P < 0.0001–0.0038) and in analyses adjusted for all covariates except WSP (d = 0.16–0.22, P < 0.0001–0.0472). Pain severity differences further decreased with adjustment for WSP (d = 0.10–0.18) and were significant for KL grade ≀2 (P = 0.0015) and 2 (P = 0.0200). Presence compared with absence of WSP was associated with significantly greater knee pain at all KL grades (d = 0.32–0.52, P < 0.0001–0.0008). In knees with PFOA, VAS pain severity sex differences were greater at each KL grade (d = 0.45–0.62, P = 0.0006–0.0030) and remained significant for all KL grades in adjusted analyses (d = 0.31–0.57, P = 0.0013–0.0361). Results using WOMAC were similar.ConclusionsWomen reported greater knee pain than men regardless of KL grade, though effect sizes were generally small. These differences increased in the presence of PFOA. The strong contribution of WSP to sex differences in knee pain suggests that central sensitivity plays a role in these differences

    Controllability and universal three-qubit quantum computation with trapped electron states

    We show how to control and perform universal three-qubit quantum computation with trapped electron quantum states. The three qubits are the electron spin, and the first two quantum states of the cyclotron and axial harmonic oscillators. We explicitly show how the universal gates can be performed. As an example of a non-trivial quantum algorithm, we outline the implementation of the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm in this system.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure. Typos corrected.     Generation of entangled states of two atoms inside a leaky cavity

    An in-depth theoretical study is carried out to examine the quasi-deterministic entanglement of two atoms inside a leaky cavity. Two Λ\Lambda-type three-level atoms, initially in their ground states, may become maximally entangled through the interaction with a single photon. By working out an exact analytic solution, we show that the probability of success depends crucially on the spectral function of the injected photon. With a cavity photon, one can generate a maximally entangled state with a certain probability that is always less than 50%. However, for an injected photon with a narrower spectral width, this probability can be significantly increased. In particular, we discover situations in which entanglement can be achieved in a single trial with an almost unit probability

    Generation of arbitrary two dimensional motional state of a trapped ion

    We present a scheme to generate an arbitrary two-dimensional quantum state of motion of a trapped ion. This proposal is based on a sequence of laser pulses, which are tuned appropriately to control transitions on the sidebands of two modes of vibration. Not more than (M+1)(N+1)(M+1)(N+1) laser pulses are needed to generate a pure state with upper phonon number MM and NN in the xx and yy direction respectively.Comment: to appear in PR

    The institutional shaping of management: in the tracks of English individualism

    Globalisation raises important questions about the shaping of economic action by cultural factors. This article explores the formation of what is seen by some as a prime influence on the formation of British management: individualism. Drawing on a range of historical sources, it argues for a comparative approach. In this case, the primary comparison drawn is between England and Scotland. The contention is that there is a systemic approach to authority in Scotland that can be contrasted to a personal approach in England. An examination of the careers of a number of Scottish pioneers of management suggests the roots of this systemic approach in practices of church governance. Ultimately this systemic approach was to take a secondary role to the personal approach engendered by institutions like the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, but it found more success in the different institutional context of the USA. The complexities of dealing with historical evidence are stressed, as is the value of taking a comparative approach. In this case this indicates a need to take religious practice as seriously as religious belief as a source of transferable practice. The article suggests that management should not be seen as a simple response to economic imperatives, but as shaped by the social and cultural context from which it emerges

    The effect on melanoma risk of genes previously associated with telomere length.

    Telomere length has been associated with risk of many cancers, but results are inconsistent. Seven single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) previously associated with mean leukocyte telomere length were either genotyped or well-imputed in 11108 case patients and 13933 control patients from Europe, Israel, the United States and Australia, four of the seven SNPs reached a P value under .05 (two-sided). A genetic score that predicts telomere length, derived from these seven SNPs, is strongly associated (P = 8.92x10(-9), two-sided) with melanoma risk. This demonstrates that the previously observed association between longer telomere length and increased melanoma risk is not attributable to confounding via shared environmental effects (such as ultraviolet exposure) or reverse causality. We provide the first proof that multiple germline genetic determinants of telomere length influence cancer risk.This is the final version of the article.     The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory

    The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory is a second generation water Cherenkov detector designed to determine whether the currently observed solar neutrino deficit is a result of neutrino oscillations. The detector is unique in its use of D2O as a detection medium, permitting it to make a solar model-independent test of the neutrino oscillation hypothesis by comparison of the charged- and neutral-current interaction rates. In this paper the physical properties, construction, and preliminary operation of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory are described.
