    Gypsy moths and American dog ticks: Space partners

    An experiment intended for the space shuttle and designed to investigate the effects of weightlessness and total darkness on gypsy moth eggs and engorged American dog ticks is described. The objectives are: (1) to reevaluate the effects of zero gravity on the termination of diapause/hibernation of embryonated gypsy moth eggs, (2) to determine the effect of zero gravity on the ovipositions and subsequent hatch from engorged female American dog ticks that have been induced to diapause in the laboratory, and (3) to determine whether morphological or biochemical changes occur in the insects under examination. Results will be compared with those from a similar experiment conducted on Skylab 4

    Gain control from beyond the classical receptive field in primate primary visual cortex

    Gain control is a salient feature of information processing throughout the visual system. Heeger (1991, 1992) described a mechanism that could underpin gain control in primary visual cortex (VI). According to this model, a neuron's response is normalized by dividing its output by the sum of a population of neurons, which are selective for orientations covering a broad range. Gain control in this scheme is manifested as a change in the semisaturation constant (contrast gain) of a VI neuron. Here we examine how flanking and annular gratings of the same or orthogonal orientation to that preferred by a neuron presented beyond the receptive field modulate gain in V1 neurons in anesthetized marmosets (Callithrix jacchus). To characterize how gain was modulated by surround stimuli, the Michaelis-Menten equation was fitted to response versus contrast functions obtained under each stimulus condition. The modulation of gain by surround stimuli was modelled best as a divisive reduction in response gain. Response gain varied with the orientation of surround stimuli, but was reduced most when the orientation of a large annular grating beyond the classical receptive field matched the preferred orientation of neurons. The strength of surround suppression did not vary significantly with retinal eccentricity or laminar distribution. In the mannoset, as in macaques (Angelucci et al., 2002a,b), gain control over the sort of distances reported here (up to 10 deg) may be mediated by feedback from extrastriate areas

    Factors predicting 6-month retention among people with opioid use disorders accessing outpatient methadone maintenance therapy in Tshwane, South Africa

    Background. In South Africa (SA), increasing illicit opioid use and associated health challenges can be managed with opioid substitution therapy (OST), such as methadone, if the recommended dose and duration of use are prescribed. The Community Oriented Substance Use Programme (COSUP) provides free methadone to patients with opioid use disorder in Tshwane, SA, on need-based criteria.Objectives. To determine selected sociodemographic and substance use treatment factors associated with retention for at least 6 months among participants receiving methadone as part of OST in COSUP.Methods. This was a retrospective cohort study using secondary data of patients treated with methadone at 8 COSUP sites. The factors associated with at least 6 months’ retention for 575 participants from December 2016 to September 2018 were analysed.Results. There were 91.3% males, 86.4% South Africans and 85.9% black Africans, with a median age of 30 years. At baseline, the majority were injecting heroin (55.5%) and were provided with free methadone (59.3%). The median dose of methadone at 6 months or on leaving the programme was 20 mg; 38.4% of participants were retained for at least 6 months. Of those not retained, the median duration on methadone was 56 days, whereas for those retained for at least 6 months, the median number of days on methadone were 254. After adjusting for sex and age, participants receiving methadone doses <50 mg had lower odds of being retained (0 - 20 mg: adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 0.25; p=0.002; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.10 - 0.61; >20 - 40 mg: aOR 0.20; p<0.001; 95% CI 0.08 - 0.49) than those administered ≥50 mg. Participants who received free methadone had 3.75 the odds of being retained than those buying it themselves (p<0.001; 95% CI 2.47 - 5.70). Participants treated in the inner city had 5.19 the odds of being retained than those in a suburban setting (p<0.001; 95% CI 2.99 - 9.03). Compared with black African participants, white participants had 3.39 the odds of being retained (p=0.001; 95% CI 1.64 - 7.00). Injecting heroin users had 0.63 the odds of being retained (p=0.032; 95% CI 0.41 - 0.96).Conclusions. To maximise retention on OST, methadone should be free, with maintenance doses >50 mg. Reasons for lower retention among participants from periurban settings, those who inject and those from previously disadvantaged racial groups need to be explored, and findings used to inform programming

    Objective: To determine the knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of healthcare students and qualified health professionals regarding theinterdisciplinary health worker team.Design: A cross-sectional descriptive study.Setting: Stellenbosch University (Tygerberg Campus) and Tygerberg Academic Hospital, Western Cape.Subjects: The sample (n = 529) consisted of first-year students, final-year students and working professionals in the fields of medicine,dietetics, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech-language and hearing therapy.Outcome measures: Self-administered, face-validated questionnaire.Results: There was an increase in knowledge in the final-year students when compared to the first-year students of their understanding ofeach profession. However, this improvement was not apparent when the working professionals’ understanding was compared to the finalyearstudents. The results indicated an increase in understanding of the scope of practice of allied health sciences (p-value = 0.001), andagreement that the patient would always benefit from an interdisciplinary approach. It was found that better patient prognosis was stronglyassociated with the care provided by an interdisciplinary team. This association increased from first-year students to final-year students(p-value = 0.019). Doctors were considered to be most valuable in the interdisciplinary team. The allied health sciences received comparablevalue ratings. The more advanced the years of experience, the less comfortable participants were to assume some of the roles of anotherdiscipline. Knowledge of the role of the dietitian increased from first-year students to final-year students (p-value = 0.001), but it remainedthe same for the professionals.Conclusion: There was an increase in knowledge and a positive change in the attitudes and perceptions of healthcare students and professionals in accordance with years of experience

    Spatial Relationship between Solar Flares and Coronal Mass Ejections

    We report on the spatial relationship between solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) observed during 1996-2005 inclusive. We identified 496 flare-CME pairs considering limb flares (distance from central meridian > 45 deg) with soft X-ray flare size > C3 level. The CMEs were detected by the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). We investigated the flare positions with respect to the CME span for the events with X-class, M-class, and C-class flares separately. It is found that the most frequent flare site is at the center of the CME span for all the three classes, but that frequency is different for the different classes. Many X-class flares often lie at the center of the associated CME, while C-class flares widely spread to the outside of the CME span. The former is different from previous studies, which concluded that no preferred flare site exists. We compared our result with the previous studies and conclude that the long-term LASCO observation enabled us to obtain the detailed spatial relation between flares and CMEs. Our finding calls for a closer flare-CME relationship and supports eruption models typified by the CSHKP magnetic reconnection model.Comment: 7 pages; 4 figures; Accepted by the Astrophysical Journa

    Kinetic theory of age-structured stochastic birth-death processes

    Classical age-structured mass-action models such as the McKendrick-von Foerster equation have been extensively studied but are unable to describe stochastic fluctuations or population-size-dependent birth and death rates. Stochastic theories that treat semi-Markov age-dependent processes using, e.g., the Bellman-Harris equation do not resolve a population's age structure and are unable to quantify population-size dependencies. Conversely, current theories that include size-dependent population dynamics (e.g., mathematical models that include carrying capacity such as the logistic equation) cannot be easily extended to take into account age-dependent birth and death rates. In this paper, we present a systematic derivation of a new, fully stochastic kinetic theory for interacting age-structured populations. By defining multiparticle probability density functions, we derive a hierarchy of kinetic equations for the stochastic evolution of an aging population undergoing birth and death. We show that the fully stochastic age-dependent birth-death process precludes factorization of the corresponding probability densities, which then must be solved by using a Bogoliubov-–Born–-Green–-Kirkwood-–Yvon-like hierarchy. Explicit solutions are derived in three limits: no birth, no death, and steady state. These are then compared with their corresponding mean-field results. Our results generalize both deterministic models and existing master equation approaches by providing an intuitive and efficient way to simultaneously model age- and population-dependent stochastic dynamics applicable to the study of demography, stem cell dynamics, and disease evolution

    We report on the experimental quantum teleportation of strongly nonclassical wave packets of light. To perform this full quantum operation while preserving and retrieving the fragile non-classicality of the input state, we have developed a broadband, zero-dispersion teleportation apparatus that works in conjunction with time-resolved state preparation equipment. Our approach brings within experimental reach a whole new set of hybrid protocols involving discrete- and continuous-variable techniques in quantum information processing for optical sciences

    Specifying computer-supported collaboration scripts

    Collaboration scripts are activity programs which aim to foster collaborative learning by structuring interaction between learners. Computer-supported collaboration scripts generally suffer from the problem of being restrained to a specific learning platform and learning context. A standardization of collaboration scripts first requires a specification of collaboration scripts that integrates multiple perspectives from computer science, education and psychology. So far, only few and limited attempts at such specifications have been made. This paper aims to consolidate and expand these approaches in light of recent findings and to propose a generic framework for the specification of collaboration scripts. The framework enables a description of collaboration scripts using a small number of components (participants, activities, roles, resources and groups) and mechanisms (task distribution, group formation and sequencing)

    An HST Search for Lyman Continuum Emission From Galaxies at z=1.1--1.4

    If enough of their Lyman limit continuum escapes, star-forming galaxies could be significant contributors to the cosmic background of ionizing photons. To investigate this possibility, we obtained the first deep imaging in the far ultraviolet of eleven bright blue galaxies at intermediate redshift (z=1.1--1.4). NO Lyman continuum emission was detected. Sensitive, model-independent, upper limits of typically 2 x 10**-19 erg/sec/cm2/Ang were obtained for the ionizing flux escaping from these normal galaxies. This corresponds to lower limits on the observed ratio of 1500 to 700Ang flux of 150 up to 1000. Based on a wide range of stellar synthesis models, this suggests that less than 6%, down to less than 1%, of the available ionizing flux emitted by hot stars is escaping these galaxies. The magnitude of this spectral break at the Lyman l imit confirms that the basic premise of `Lyman break' searches for galaxies at high redshift can also be applied at intermediate redshifts. This implies that the integrated contribution of galaxies to the UV cosmic background at z around 1.2 is less than 15%, and may be less than 2%.Comment: 20 manuscript pages, which includes two tables and two figures.
