Uncovering the topology of configuration space networks
The configuration space network (CSN) of a dynamical system is an effective
approach to represent the ensemble of configurations sampled during a
simulation and their dynamic connectivity. To elucidate the connection between
the CSN topology and the underlying free-energy landscape governing the system
dynamics and thermodynamics, an analytical soluti on is provided to explain the
heavy tail of the degree distribution, neighbor co nnectivity and clustering
coefficient. This derivation allows to understand the universal CSN network
topology observed in systems ranging from a simple quadratic well to the native
state of the beta3s peptide and a 2D lattice heteropolymer. Moreover CSN are
shown to fall in the general class of complex networks describe d by the

Dinosaur tracks from the Kilmaluag Formation (Bathonian, Middle Jurassic) of Score Bay, Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK
Tracks of a juvenile theropod dinosaur with footprint lengths of between 2 and 9 cm as well as adults of the same ichnospecies with footprints of about 15–25 cm in length were found in the Bathonian (Middle Jurassic) Kilmaluag Formation of Score Bay, northwestern Trotternish Peninsula, Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK. Two footprint sizes occur together on the same bedding plane in the central portion of Score Bay, both in situ and on loose blocks. Another horizon containing footprints above this was also identified. The footprints from the lowest horizon were produced in a desiccated silty mud that was covered with sand. A close association of both adults and juveniles with similar travel direction indicated by the footprints may suggest post-hatching care in theropod dinosaurs. Other footprints, produced on a rippled sandy substrate, have been found on the slightly higher bedding plane at this locality. Loose blocks found 130 m to the northeast in the central part of Score Bay have not been correlated with any in situ sediments, but were preserved in a similar manner to those from the higher bedding plane. These tracks represent the youngest dinosaur remains yet found in Scotland

Fusion versus Breakup: Observation of Large Fusion Suppression for ^9Be + ^{208}Pb
Complete fusion excitation functions for Be + Pb have been
measured to high precision at near barrier energies. The experimental fusion
barrier distribution extracted from these data allows reliable prediction of
the expected complete fusion cross-sections. However, the measured
cross-sections are only 68% of those predicted. The large cross-sections
observed for incomplete fusion products support the interpretation that this
suppression of fusion is caused by Be breaking up into charged fragments
before reaching the fusion barrier. Implications for the fusion of radioactive

The (Re-)Discovery of G350.1-0.3: A Young, Luminous Supernova Remnant and Its Neutron Star
We present an XMM-Newton observation of the long-overlooked radio source
G350.1-0.3. The X-ray spectrum of G350.1-0.3 can be fit by a shocked plasma
with two components: a high-temperature (1.5 keV) region with a low ionization
time scale and enhanced abundances, plus a cooler (0.36 keV) component in
ionization equilibrium and with solar abundances. The X-ray spectrum and the
presence of non-thermal, polarized, radio emission together demonstrate that
G350.1-0.3 is a young, luminous supernova remnant (SNR), for which archival HI
and 12-CO data indicate a distance of 4.5 kpc. The diameter of the source then
implies an age of only ~900 years. The SNR's distorted appearance, small size
and the presence of 12-CO emission along the SNR's eastern edge all indicate
that the source is interacting with a complicated distribution of dense ambient
material. An unresolved X-ray source, XMMU J172054.5-372652, is detected a few
arcminutes west of the brightest SNR emission. The thermal X-ray spectrum and
lack of any multi-wavelength counterpart suggest that this source is a neutron
star associated with G350.1-0.3, most likely a "central compact object", as

Standing sausage waves in photospheric magnetic waveguides
By focusing on the oscillations of the cross-sectional area and the intensity of magnetic waveguides located in the lower solar atmosphere, we aim to detect and identify magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) sausage waves. Capturing several series of high-resolution images of pores and sunspots and employing wavelet analysis in conjunction with empirical mode decomposition (EMD) makes the MHD wave analysis possible. For this paper, two sunspots and one pore (with a light bridge) were chosen as representative examples of MHD waveguides in the lower solar atmosphere. The sunspots and pore display a range of periods from 4 to 65 minutes. The sunspots support longer periods than the pore - generally enabling a doubling or quadrupling of the maximum pore oscillatory period. All of these structures display area oscillations indicative of MHD sausage modes and in-phase behaviour between the area and intensity, presenting mounting evidence for the presence of the slow sausage mode within these waveguides. The presence of fast and slow MHD sausage waves has been detected in three different magnetic waveguides in the lower solar photosphere. Furthermore, these oscillations are potentially standing harmonics supported in the waveguides which are sandwiched vertically between the temperature minimum in the lower solar atmosphere and the transition region. Standing harmonic oscillations, by means of solar magneto-seismology, may allow insight into the sub-resolution structure of photospheric MHD waveguides
The de Morton mobility index: normative data for a clinically useful mobility instrument
Determining mobility status is an important component of any health assessment for older adults. In order for a mobility measure to be relevant and meaningful, normative data are required for comparison to a healthy reference population. The DEMMI is the first mobility instrument to measure mobility across the spectrum from bed bound to functional levels of independent mobility. In this cross-sectional observational study, normative data were obtained for the DEMMI from a population of 183 healthy, community-dwelling adults age 60+ who resided in Vancouver, Canada and Melbourne, Australia. Older age categories had significantly lower DEMMI mobility mean scores (P < 0.05), as did individuals who walked with a mobility aid or lived in semi-independent living (assisted living or retirement village), whereas DEMMI scores did not differ by sex (P = 0.49) or reported falls history (P = 0.21). Normative data for the DEMMI mobility instrument provides vital reference scores to facilitate its use across the mobility spectrum in clinical, research, and policymaking settings.E. M. Macri, J.A. Controlling spin relaxation with a cavity
Spontaneous emission of radiation is one of the fundamental mechanisms by
which an excited quantum system returns to equilibrium. For spins, however,
spontaneous emission is generally negligible compared to other non-radiative
relaxation processes because of the weak coupling between the magnetic dipole
and the electromagnetic field. In 1946, Purcell realized that the spontaneous
emission rate can be strongly enhanced by placing the quantum system in a
resonant cavity -an effect which has since been used extensively to control the
lifetime of atoms and semiconducting heterostructures coupled to microwave or
optical cavities, underpinning single-photon sources. Here we report the first
application of these ideas to spins in solids. By coupling donor spins in
silicon to a superconducting microwave cavity of high quality factor and small
mode volume, we reach for the first time the regime where spontaneous emission
constitutes the dominant spin relaxation mechanism. The relaxation rate is
increased by three orders of magnitude when the spins are tuned to the cavity
resonance, showing that energy relaxation can be engineered and controlled
on-demand. Our results provide a novel and general way to initialise spin
systems into their ground state, with applications in magnetic resonance and
quantum information processing. They also demonstrate that, contrary to popular
belief, the coupling between the magnetic dipole of a spin and the
electromagnetic field can be enhanced up to the point where quantum
fluctuations have a dramatic effect on the spin dynamics; as such our work
represents an important step towards the coherent magnetic coupling of

Turnover, account value and diversification of real traders: evidence of collective portfolio optimizing behavior
Despite the availability of very detailed data on financial market,
agent-based modeling is hindered by the lack of information about real trader
behavior. This makes it impossible to validate agent-based models, which are
thus reverse-engineering attempts. This work is a contribution to the building
of a set of stylized facts about the traders themselves. Using the client
database of Swissquote Bank SA, the largest on-line Swiss broker, we find
empirical relationships between turnover, account values and the number of
assets in which a trader is invested. A theory based on simple mean-variance
portfolio optimization that crucially includes variable transaction costs is
able to reproduce faithfully the observed behaviors. We finally argue that our
results bring into light the collective ability of a population to construct a
mean-variance portfolio that takes into account the structure of transaction

In recent decades island studies scholars have done much to disrupt static notions of the island form, increasingly foregrounding how islands form part of complex networks of relations, assemblages and flows. In this paper, we shift the terms of debate more explicitly to relationality in the Anthropocene. We consider the implications and challenges that a wider set of debates, particularly surrounding island ‘resilience’, concerning the Anthropocene in the social sciences and humanities pose for island studies
