    Rock-eating mycorrhizas: their role in plant nutrition and biogeochemical cycles

    A decade ago, tunnels inside mineral grains were found that were likely formed by hyphae of ectomycorrhizal (EcM) fungi. This observation implied that EcM fungi can dissolve mineral grains. The observation raised several questions on the ecology of these ¿rock-eating¿ fungi. This review addresses the roles of these rock-eating EcM associations in plant nutrition, biogeochemical cycles and pedogenesis. Research approaches ranged from molecular to ecosystem level scales. Nutrient deficiencies change EcM seedling exudation patterns of organic anions and thus their potential to mobilise base cations from minerals. This response was fungal species-specific. Some EcM fungi accelerated mineral weathering. While mineral weathering could also increase the concentrations of phytotoxic aluminium in the soil solution, some EcM fungi increase Al tolerance through an enhanced exudation of oxalate. Through their contribution to Al transport, EcM hyphae could be agents in pedogenesis, especially podzolisation. A modelling study indicated that mineral tunnelling is less important than surface weathering by EcM fungi. With both processes taken together, the contribution of EcM fungi to weathering may be significant. In the field vertical niche differentiation of EcM fungi was shown for EcM root tips and extraradical mycelium. In the field EcM fungi and tunnel densities were correlated. Our results support a role of rock-eating EcM fungi in plant nutrition and biogeochemical cycles. EcM fungal species-specific differences indicate the need for further research with regard to this variation in functional traits

    Interstellar polarization and grain alignment: the role of iron and silicon

    We compiled the polarimetric data for a sample of lines of sight with known abundances of Mg, Si, and Fe. We correlated the degree of interstellar polarization PP and polarization efficiency (the ratio of PP to the colour excess E(BV)E(B-V) or extinction AVA_V) with dust phase abundances. We detect an anticorrelation between PP and the dust phase abundance of iron in non silicate - containing grains ]_\rm d, a correlation between PP and the abundance of Si, and no correlation between P/E(BV)P/E(B-V) or P/AVP/A_V and dust phase abundances. These findings can be explained if mainly the silicate grains aligned by the radiative mechanism are responsible for the observed interstellar linear polarization.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Interleukin-10 enhances the intestinal epithelial barrier in the presence of corticosteroids through p38 MAPK activity in Caco-2 monolayers : a possible mechanism for steroid responsiveness in ulcerative colitis

Despite that, up to 60% of patients do not respond adequately to steroid treatment. Previously, we reported that low IL-10 mRNA levels in intestine are associated with a poor response to glucocorticoids in active Crohn's disease. Here, we test whether IL-10 can favour the response to glucocorticoids by improving the TNFα-induced intestinal barrier damage (assessed by transepithelial electrical resistance) in Caco-2 monolayers, and their possible implications on glucocorticoid responsiveness in active ulcerative colitis. We show that the association of IL-10 and glucocorticoids improves the integrity of TNFα-treated Caco-2 cells and that p38 MAPK plays a key role. In vitro, IL-10 facilitates the nuclear translocation of p38 MAPK-phosphorylated thereby modulating glucocorticoids-receptor-α, IL-10-receptor-α and desmoglein-2 expression. In glucocorticoids-refractory patients, p38 MAPK phosphorylation and membrane desmoglein-2 expression are reduced in colonic epithelial cells. These results suggest that p38 MAPK-mediated synergism between IL-10 and glucocorticoids improves desmosome straightness contributing to the recovery of intestinal epithelium and reducing luminal antigens contact with lamina propria in ulcerative colitis.     Network dynamics:a computational framework for the simulation of the glassy state

    An out-of-equilibrium simulation method for tracking the time evolution of glassy systems (or any other systems that can be described by hopping dynamics over a network of discrete states) is presented. Graph theory and complexity concepts are utilised, alongside the method of the dynamical integration of a Markovian web (G. C. Boulougouris and D. N. Theodorou, J. Chem. Phys., 2007, 127, 084903) in order to provide a unified framework for dealing with the long time-scales of non-ergodic systems. Within the developed formalism, the network of states accessible to the system is considered a finite part of the overall universe, communicating with it through well-defined boundary states. The analytical solution of the probability balance equation proceeds without the need for assuming the existence of an equilibrium distribution among the states of the network and the corresponding survival and escape probabilities (as functions of time) are defined. More importantly, the study of the probability flux through the dividing surface separating the system and its environment reveals the relaxation mechanisms of the system. We apply our approach to the network of states obtained by exploring the energy landscape of an atomistically detailed glassy specimen of atactic polystyrene. The rate constants connecting different basins of the landscape are evaluated by multi-dimensional transition-state-theory. We are able to accurately probe the appearance of the δ- and γ-subglass relaxation mechanisms and their relevant time-scales, out of atomistic simulations. The proposed approach can fill a gap in the rational molecular design toolbox, by providing an alternative to molecular dynamics for structural relaxation in glasses and/or other slow molecular processes (e.g., adsorption or desorption) that involve very distant time-scales.</p

    The geoaccumulation index and enrichment factor of mercury in mangrove sediment of Port Klang, Selangor, Malaysia.

    Mangrove areas are important to the ecosystem. One of its crucial functions is as a sink of pollutants, especially metal ions. However, the accumulation of metals in mangrove sediment can generate negative impacts on plant growth, microbial activity, and soil fertility. Apart from that, the severity of the impact is highly influenced by the type of metal found in the sediment and the quality of sediment itself. One of the metals that have adverse effects on the environment is mercury. The objectives of this study are to determine the concentration and distribution of mercury and to assess the enrichment of mercury in Port Klang mangrove sediment by using geoaccumulation index and enrichment factor. Sediment samples were collected from 30 sampling points that cover Langat River and Klang River estuaries, Lumut Straits, Pulau Klang, and Pulau Indah. During sampling, water parameters such as pH, salinity, electrical conductivity, and total dissolved solids were measured in situ, whereas the total mercury in sediment samples was determined at the laboratory using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. In this study, mercury was found to be concentrated along Lumut Strait especially in the mixing zone near the confluence of Langat River and at the jetty to Pulau Ketam. The geoaccumulation index and enrichment factor (calculated using logarithmized data of the reference element) found that three stations were enriched with mercury. In addition, geoaccumulation index was also observed to be more objective compared to enrichment factor whose results were influenced by the concentration of reference element used
