    A P-Lingua based simulator for tissue P systems

    AbstractInvestigations within the field of tissue-like P systems are being conducted, on one hand studying their computational efficiency, and on the other hand exploring the possibilities to use them as a computational modelling framework to biological phenomena.In both cases it is necessary to develop software that provides simulation tools (simulators) for the existing variety of tissue P systems. Such simulators allow us to carry on computations of solutions to computationally hard problems on certain (small) instances. Moreover, they also provide a way to verify tissue-like models for real biological processes, by means of experimental data.The paper presents an extension of P-Lingua (a specification language intended to become a standard for software devoted to P systems), in order to cover the class of tissue-like P systems, that were not considered in the previous release. This extension involves on one hand defining the syntax to be used, and on the other hand introducing a new built-in simulation algorithm that has been added to the core library of P-Lingua

    QRsens:dual-purpose quick response code with built-in colorimetric sensors

    QRsens represents a family of Quick Response (QR) sensing codes for in-situ air analysis with a customized smartphone application to simultaneously read the QR code and the colorimetric sensors. Five colorimetric sensors (temperature, relative humidity (RH), and three gas sensors (CO₂, NH₃ and H₂S)) were designed with the aim of proposing two end-use applications for ambient analysis, i.e., enclosed spaces monitoring, and smart packaging. Both QR code and colorimetric sensing inks were deposited by standard screen printing on white paper. To ensure minimal ambient light dependence of QRsens during the real-time analysis, the smartphone application was programmed for an effective colour correction procedure based on black and white references for three standard illumination temperatures (3000, 4000 and 5000 K). Depending on the type of sensor being analysed, this integration achieved a reduction of ∼71 – 87% of QRsens's dependence on the light temperature. After the illumination colour correction, colorimetric gas sensors exhibited a detection range of 0.7–4.1%, 0.7–7.5 ppm, and 0.13–0.7 ppm for CO2, NH3 and H2S, respectively. In summary, the study presents an affordable built-in multi-sensing platform in the form of QRsens for in-situ monitoring with potential in different types of ambient air analysis applications

    Influence of Dietary Algae Meal on Lipid Oxidation and Volatile Profile of Meat from Lambs with Competent Reticular Groove Reflex

    Dietary lipid sources influence intramuscular fatty acid composition, which in turn may affect the volatile profile of meat. The aim of this work was to investigate the effects of marine algae supplementation (Aurantiochytrium limacinum) on volatile compounds of cooked lamb meat. Forty-eight lambs with 42 days of age were divided into three groups: lambs fed a conventional diet without algae meal supplementation (NOALG), lambs with competent reticular groove reflex (RGR) fed the same diet supplemented with 2.5% marine algae meal mixed in the concentrate (ALGCON), and lambs with competent RGR, receiving the same diet and fed with 2.5% marine algae meal in a milk replacer to bypass the rumen (ALGMILK). Lipid and protein oxidation in raw meat was assessed and volatile compounds in grilled meat were determined. The highest and lowest lipid oxidations were observed in the ALGMILK and NOALG groups, respectively. Protein oxidation was unaffected. Out of 56 identified compounds, 12 volatiles significantly increased in both algae groups and 6 of them exclusively in the ALGCON treatment. Algae meal supplementation and its form of administration, either protected or not from rumen degradation, are important factors to consider in lipid oxidation and the aromatic profile of lamb meat

    El estudio PROPRESE: resultados de un nuevo modelo organizativo en atención primaria para pacientes con cardiopatía isquémica crónica basado en una intervención multifactorial

    ResumenObjetivoComparando los resultados obtenidos en los estudios EUROASPIRE I y EUROASPIRE III en pacientes con cardiopatía isquémica se muestra que el grado de control de los factores de riesgo mayores es mejorable. El objetivo de este estudio es evaluar la eficacia de una intervención multifactorial orientada a la mejora del grado de control en estos pacientes en el ámbito de la atención primaria.MétodosEn este estudio de intervención aleatorizado, con 1 año de seguimiento, se reclutó a pacientes con diagnóstico de cardiopatía isquémica (145 en el grupo de intervención y 1.461 en el grupo control). Se aplicó una intervención organizativa mixta basada en la mejora de la relación profesional sanitario-paciente (de acuerdo a los modelos del Chronic Care, el Stanford Expert Patient Programme y el Kaiser Permanente) y en la formación profesional continuada. Los principales resultados fueron el efecto sobre el tabaquismo, el colesterol unido a lipoproteínas de baja densidad (cLDL), la presión arterial sistólica (PAS) y la presión arterial diastólica (PAD) a través de un análisis multivariable.ResultadosLas características de los pacientes fueron: edad (68,4±11,8 años), varones (71,6%), diabetes mellitus (51,3%), dislipemia (68,5%), hipertensión arterial (76,7%), no fumadores (76,1%); cLDL < 100mg/dl (46,9%); PAS < 140mmHg (64,5%); PAD < 90 (91,2%). El análisis multivariable mostró que el riesgo para el buen control en el grupo de intervención fue tabaquismo, riesgo relativo ajustado (RRa): 15,7 (intervalo de confianza del 95% [IC95%], 4,2–58,7); p < 0,001; cLDL, RRa: 2,98 (IC95%, 1,48–6,02); p < 0,002; PAS, RRa: 1.97 (IC95%, 1,21–3,23); p < 0,007, y PAD; RRa: 1,51 (IC95%, 0,65–3,50); p < 0,342.ConclusionesUna intervención multifactorial basada en el modelo de paciente crónico centrada en atención primaria y que facilite la toma de decisiones compartidas con los pacientes y la formación de los profesionales mejora el grado de control de los factores de riesgo cardiovascular (tabaquismo, cLDL y PAS). Las estrategias de mejora en la atención de la cronicidad pueden ser una herramienta eficaz para conseguir mejores resultados.AbstractObjectiveComparison of the results from the EUROASPIRE I to the EUROASPIRE III, in patients with coronary heart disease, shows that the prevalence of uncontrolled risk factors remains high. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a new multifactorial intervention in order to improve health care for chronic coronary heart disease patients in primary care.MethodsIn this randomized clinical trial with a 1-year follow-up period, we recruited patients with a diagnosis of coronary heart disease (145 for the intervention group and 1461 for the control group). An organizational intervention on the patient-professional relationship (centered on the Chronic Care Model, the Stanford Expert Patient Programme and the Kaiser Permanente model) and formative strategy for professionals were carried out. The main outcomes were smoking control, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). A multivariate analysis was performed.ResultsThe characteristics of patients were: age (68.4±11.8 years), male (71.6%), having diabetes mellitus (51.3%), dyslipidemia (68.5%), arterial hypertension (76.7%), non-smokers (76.1%); LDL-C < 100mg/dL (46.9%); SBP < 140mmHg (64.5%); DBP < 90 (91.2%). The multivariable analysis showed the risk of good control for intervention group to be: smoking, adjusted relative risk (aRR): 15.70 (95% confidence interval [95%CI], 4.2–58.7); P < .001; LDL-C, aRR: 2.98 (95%CI, 1.48–6.02); P < .002; SPB, aRR: 1.97 (95%CI, 1.21–3.23); P < .007, and DBP: aRR: 1.51 (95%CI, 0.65–3.50); P < .342.ConclusionsAn intervention based on models for chronic patients focused in primary care and involving patients in medical decision making improves cardiovascular risk factors control (smoking, LDL-C and SBP). Chronic care strategies may be an efficacy tool to help clinicians to involve the patients with a diagnosis of CHD to reach better outcomes

    Influence of the LILRA3 Deletion on Multiple Sclerosis Risk : Original Data and Meta-Analysis

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified over hundred polymorphisms with modest individual effects in MS susceptibility and they have confirmed the main individual effect of the Major Histocompatibility Complex. Additional risk loci with immunologically relevant genes were found significantly overrepresented. Nonetheless, it is accepted that most of the genetic architecture underlying susceptibility to the disease remains to be defined. Candidate association studies of the leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor LILRA3 gene in MS have been repeatedly reported with inconsistent results. In an attempt to shed some light on these controversial findings, a combined analysis was performed including the previously published datasets and three newly genotyped cohorts. Both wild-type and deleted LILRA3 alleles were discriminated in a single-tube PCR amplification and the resulting products were visualized by their different electrophoretic mobilities. Overall, this meta-analysis involved 3200 MS patients and 3069 matched healthy controls and it did not evidence significant association of the LILRA3 deletion [carriers of LILRA3 deletion: p = 0.25, OR (95% CI) = 1.07 (0.95-1.19)], even after stratification by gender and the HLA-DRB1*15 : 01 risk allele

    Increasing dominance of large lianas in Amazonian forests

    Ecological orthodoxy suggests that old-growth forests should be close to dynamic equilibrium, but this view has been challenged by recent findings that neotropical forests are accumulating carbon and biomass, possibly in response to the increasing atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide. However, it is unclear whether the recent increase in tree biomass has been accompanied by a shift in community composition. Such changes could reduce or enhance the carbon storage potential of old-growth forests in the long term. Here we show that non-fragmented Amazon forests are experiencing a concerted increase in the density, basal area and mean size of woody climbing plants (lianas). Over the last two decades of the twentieth century the dominance of large lianas relative to trees has increased by 1.7–4.6% a year. Lianas enhance tree mortality and suppress tree growth, so their rapid increase implies that the tropical terrestrial carbon sink may shut down sooner than current models suggest. Predictions of future tropical carbon fluxes will need to account for the changing composition and dynamics of supposedly undisturbed forests

    Introduction: The population uses medicinal plants indiscriminately to treat diseases, with the believe that they are safe and lack adverse effects. Objective: To determine the in vivo toxicological and analgesic effect of the chloroform extract of Calea urticifolia leaves. Methodology: The toxicological study was performed using a 90- day sub-chronic toxicity test in NIH mice, at repeated and continuous doses. . Blood biochemistry, hematology and histopathological examination of organs were performed. The analgesic activity was evaluated in vivo using a model of abdominal contortions. Results: The administration of the plant extract caused the appearance of clinical signs of toxicity, alterations in hematic parameters and blood biochemistry, as well as histological alterations in some of organs. The analgesic activity at 100 mg/kg was similar to the Indomethacin drug. Conclusion: Despite the proven analgesic activity, according to the observed toxicological effects in this study, the prolonged use of Calea urticifolia leaves is not recommended for the treatment of diseasesIntroducción: La población utiliza la medicina a base de hierbas de forma indiscriminada basándose en la creencia de que las plantas medicinales carecen de efectos adversos. Objetivo: Determinar in vivo el efecto toxicológico y analgésico del extracto clorofórmico de las hojas de Calea urticifolia. Metodología: El estudio toxicológico fue realizado mediante la prueba de toxicidad subcrónica de 90 días, a dosis repetidas y continuas en ratones NIH. Se realizaron análisis de bioquímica sanguínea, hematología y el examen histopatológico de órganos. La actividad analgésica fue evaluada con el modelo in vivo de contorsiones abdominales. Resultados: La administración del extracto vegetal provocó la aparición de signos clínicos de toxicidad, alteraciones en los parámetros hematólogos y bioquímica sanguínea, además alteraciones histológicas en algunos de los órganos. La actividad analgésica a 100 mg/kg resultó comparable con el fármaco indometacina. Conclusión: Pese a la actividad analgésica demostrada, y de acuerdo a los efectos toxicológicos encontrados, no se recomienda el uso prolongado de las hojas de Calea urticifolia, para el tratamiento de enfermedade

    CD209 in inflammatory bowel disease: a case-control study in the Spanish population

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The etiology of Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Crohn's Disease (CD), considered together as Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD), involves environmental and genetic factors. Although some genes are already known, the genetics underlying these diseases is complex and new candidates are continuously emerging. The <it>CD209 </it>gene is located in a region linked previously to IBD and a <it>CD209 </it>functional polymorphism (rs4804803) has been associated to other inflammatory conditions. Our aim was to study the potential involvement of this <it>CD209 </it>variant in IBD susceptibility.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We performed a case-control study with 515 CD patients, 497 UC patients and 731 healthy controls, all of them white Spaniards. Samples were typed for the <it>CD209 </it>single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs4804803 by TaqMan technology. Frequency comparisons were performed using χ<sup>2 </sup>tests.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>No association between <it>CD209 </it>and UC or CD was observed initially. However, stratification of UC patients by <it>HLA-DR3 </it>status, a strong protective allele, showed that carriage of the <it>CD209</it>_G allele could increase susceptibility in the subgroup of <it>HLA-DR3</it>-positive individuals (p = 0.03 OR = 1.77 95% CI 1.04–3.02, <it>vs. </it>controls).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>A functional variant in the <it>CD209 </it>gene, rs4804803, does not seem to be influencing Crohn's disease susceptibility. However, it could be involved in the etiology or pathology of Ulcerative Colitis in <it>HLA-DR3</it>-positive individuals but further studies are necessary.</p

    Efficacy and Safety of Oral Administration of a Mixture of Probiotic Strains in Patients with Psoriasis: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.

    The aim of this 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was to determine the efficacy and safety of a probiotic mixture in the reduction of psoriasis severity. Ninety 18-70-year-old adults with plaque psoriasis were randomized into probiotic and placebo groups. At 12-week follow-up, 66.7% of patients in the probiotic group and 41.9% in the placebo group showed a reduction in Psoriasis Area and Severity Index of up to 75% (p < 0.05). A clinically relevant difference was observed in Physician Global Assessment index: 48.9% in the probiotic group achieved a score of 0 or 1, compared with 30.2% in the placebo group. The results of follow-up 6 months after the end of the study showed a lower risk of relapse after the intake of the probiotic mixture.
