Sub-arcsecond radio and optical observations of the likely counterpart to the gamma-ray source 2FGL J2056.7+4939
We have searched and reviewed all multi- wavelength data available for the
region towards the gamma-ray source 2FGL J2056.7+4939 in order to con- strain
its possible counterpart at lower energies. As a result, only a point-like
optical/infrared source with flat-spectrum radio emission is found to be
consistent with all X-ray and gamma-ray error circles. Its struc- ture is
marginally resolved at radio wavelengths at the sub-arcsecond level. An
extragalactic scenario appears to be the most likely interpretation for this
object.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl
Effect of band-filling and structural distortions on the Curie temperature of Fe-Mo double perovkites
By means of high resolution neutron powder diffraction at low temperature we
have characterized the structural details of
() and () series of compounds. This study reveals a similar variation of the mean
bond-angle \FeOMo in both series. In contrast, the mean bond-distance \FeMoO\
increases with La but not with Ca substitution. Both series also present a
different evolution of the Curie temperature (), which raises in the La
series and slightly decreases in the Ca one. We thus conclude that the
enhancement of in the La series is due to the electron filling of the
conduction band and a concomitant rising of the density of states at the Fermi
level.Comment: Revtex, 4 Journal pages, 2 figures, 1 tabl
Collective vs local measurements in qubit mixed state estimation
We discuss the problem of estimating a general (mixed) qubit state. We give
the optimal guess that can be inferred from any given set of measurements. For
collective measurements and for a large number of copies, we show that the
error in the estimation goes as 1/N. For local measurements we focus on the
simpler case of states lying on the equatorial plane of the Bloch sphere. We
show that standard tomographic techniques lead to an error proportional to
, while with our optimal data processing it is proportional to

Phase transition and selection in a four-species cyclic Lotka-Volterra model
We study a four species ecological system with cyclic dominance whose
individuals are distributed on a square lattice. Randomly chosen individuals
migrate to one of the neighboring sites if it is empty or invade this site if
occupied by their prey. The cyclic dominance maintains the coexistence of all
the four species if the concentration of vacant sites is lower than a threshold
value. Above the treshold, a symmetry breaking ordering occurs via growing
domains containing only two neutral species inside. These two neutral species
can protect each other from the external invaders (predators) and extend their
common territory. According to our Monte Carlo simulations the observed phase
transition is equivalent to those found in spreading models with two equivalent
absorbing states although the present model has continuous sets of absorbing
states with different portions of the two neutral species. The selection
mechanism yielding symmetric phases is related to the domain growth process
whith wide boundaries where the four species coexist.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Scaling behavior of the directed percolation universality class
In this work we consider five different lattice models which exhibit
continuous phase transitions into absorbing states. By measuring certain
universal functions, which characterize the steady state as well as the
dynamical scaling behavior, we present clear numerical evidence that all models
belong to the universality class of directed percolation. Since the considered
models are characterized by different interaction details the obtained
universal scaling plots are an impressive manifestation of the universality of
directed percolation.Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Nuclear Physics
Magnetoelectric ordering of BiFeO3 from the perspective of crystal chemistry
In this paper we examine the role of crystal chemistry factors in creating
conditions for formation of magnetoelectric ordering in BiFeO3. It is generally
accepted that the main reason of the ferroelectric distortion in BiFeO3 is
concerned with a stereochemical activity of the Bi lone pair. However, the lone
pair is stereochemically active in the paraelectric orthorhombic beta-phase as
well. We demonstrate that a crucial role in emerging of phase transitions of
the metal-insulator, paraelectric-ferroelectric and magnetic disorder-order
types belongs to the change of the degree of the lone pair stereochemical
activity - its consecutive increase with the temperature decrease. Using the
structural data, we calculated the sign and strength of magnetic couplings in
BiFeO3 in the range from 945 C down to 25 C and found the couplings, which
undergo the antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic transition with the temperature
decrease and give rise to the antiferromagnetic ordering and its delay in
regard to temperature, as compared to the ferroelectric ordering. We discuss
the reasons of emerging of the spatially modulated spin structure and its
suppression by doping with La3+.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, 3 table

Portuguese Ministers, 1851-1999: Social Background and Paths to Power

The âout-of-typeâ, violent nature of most regime transformations accounts for the purges in and the extensive replacements of the political personnel, namely of the uppermost officeholders. In the case of Cabinet members, such discontinuities did not imply, however, radical changes in their social profile. Although there were some significant variations, a series of salient characteristics have persisted over time. The typical Portuguese minister is a male in his midforties, of middle-class origin and predominantly urban-born, highly educated and with a state servant background. The two main occupational contingents have been university professors - except for the First Republic (1910-26) - and the military, the latter having only recently been eclipsed with the consolidation of contemporary democracy. As regards career pathways, the most striking feature is the secular trend for the declining role of parliamentary experience, which the democratic regime did not clearly reverse. In this period, a technocratic background rather than political experience has been indeed the privileged credential for a significant proportion of minister
Antibodies Contributing to Focal Epilepsy Signs and Symptoms Score
Objective: Diagnosing autoimmune encephalitis (AIE) is difficult in patients with less fulminant diseases such as epilepsy. However, recognition is important, as patients require immunotherapy. This study aims to identify antibodies in patients with focal epilepsy of unknown etiology, and to create a score to preselect patients requiring testing. Methods: In this prospective, multicenter cohort study, adults with focal epilepsy of unknown etiology, without recognized AIE, were included, between December 2014 and December 2017, and followed for 1 year. Serum, and if available cerebrospinal fluid, were analyzed using different laboratory techniques. The ACES score was created using factors favoring an autoimmune etiology of seizures (AES), as determined by multivariate logistic regression. The model was externally validated and evaluated using the Concordance (C) statistic. Results: We included 582 patients, with median epilepsy duration of 8 years (interquartile range = 2â18)
Evolution of the use of corticosteroids for the treatment of hospitalised COVID-19 patients in Spain between March and November 2020: SEMI-COVID national registry
Objectives: Since the results of the RECOVERY trial, WHO recommendations about the use of corticosteroids (CTs) in COVID-19 have changed. The aim of the study is to analyse the evolutive use of CTs in Spain during the pandemic to assess the potential influence of new recommendations. Material and methods: A retrospective, descriptive, and observational study was conducted on adults hospitalised due to COVID-19 in Spain who were included in the SEMI-COVID- 19 Registry from March to November 2020. Results: CTs were used in 6053 (36.21%) of the included patients. The patients were older (mean (SD)) (69.6 (14.6) vs. 66.0 (16.8) years; p < 0.001), with hypertension (57.0% vs. 47.7%; p < 0.001), obesity (26.4% vs. 19.3%; p < 0.0001), and multimorbidity prevalence (20.6% vs. 16.1%; p < 0.001). These patients had higher values (mean (95% CI)) of C-reactive protein (CRP) (86 (32.7-160) vs. 49.3 (16-109) mg/dL; p < 0.001), ferritin (791 (393-1534) vs. 470 (236- 996) ”g/dL; p < 0.001), D dimer (750 (430-1400) vs. 617 (345-1180) ”g/dL; p < 0.001), and lower Sp02/Fi02 (266 (91.1) vs. 301 (101); p < 0.001). Since June 2020, there was an increment in the use of CTs (March vs. September; p < 0.001). Overall, 20% did not receive steroids, and 40% received less than 200 mg accumulated prednisone equivalent dose (APED). Severe patients are treated with higher doses. The mortality benefit was observed in patients with oxygen saturation </=90%. Conclusions: Patients with greater comorbidity, severity, and inflammatory markers were those treated with CTs. In severe patients, there is a trend towards the use of higher doses. The mortality benefit was observed in patients with oxygen saturation </=90%
