    Durch die fast gleichzeitig geglĂŒckten Funde von sehr altertĂŒmlichen Steinwerkzeugen im Neckargebiet (durch A. Rust) und im Donaugebiet (durch H. Mohr und H. KĂŒpper) ist die Frage der Existenz einer bodenstĂ€ndigen Industrie zur Zeit des Heidelberger Vormenschen (oder eines VorgĂ€ngers) in Mitteleuropa bejaht worden. Die zur Beschreibung gelangenden GerĂ€te wurden aus dem höchsten und jetzt als basalpleistozĂ€n erkannten Schotterkomplex im Raum von Wien (Laaer Berg - Wiener Berg) aufgesammelt. Es ergaben sich klare Beziehungen (sowohl in typologischer als in schlagtechnischer Hinsicht) zum GerĂ€tebestand der Heidelberger Stufe im Neckargebiet. Nach M. Mottl ist die Industrie der Laaer Berg-Schotter im Wesentlichen als eine Geröll-Abschlag-Industrie mit starker Betonung der Nasenschaberformen zu bezeichnen. Die - spĂ€rlichen - Wirbeltierfunde aus den Schottern sprechen eindeutig fĂŒr die basale Stellung des Schotterkomplexes innerhalb des pleistozĂ€nen Systems. AnknĂŒpfungspunkte, die eine Verbindung zur Faustkeilentwicklung herstellen wĂŒrden, konnten nicht nachgewiesen werden.researc

    A guide to the processing and standardization of global palaeoecological data for large-scale syntheses using fossil pollen

    Aim: Palaeoecological data are crucial for comprehending large-scale biodiversity patterns and the natural and anthropogenic drivers that influence them over time. Over the last decade, the availability of open-access research databases of palaeoecological proxies has substantially increased. These databases open the door to research questions needing advanced numerical analyses and modelling based on big-data compilations. However, compiling and analysing palaeoecological data pose unique challenges that require a guide for producing standardized and reproducible compilations. Innovation: We present a step-by-step guide of how to process fossil pollen data into a standardized dataset compilation ready for macroecological and palaeoecological analyses. We describe successive criteria that will enhance the quality of the compilations. Though these criteria are project and research question-dependent, we discuss the most important assumptions that should be considered and adjusted accordingly. Our guide is accompanied by an R-workflow—called FOSSILPOL—and corresponding R-package—called R-Fossilpol—that provide a detailed protocol ready for interdisciplinary users. We illustrate the workflow by sourcing and processing Scandinavian fossil pollen datasets and show the reproducibility of continental-scale data processing. Main Conclusions: The study of biodiversity and macroecological patterns through time and space requires large-scale syntheses of palaeoecological datasets. The data preparation for such syntheses must be transparent and reproducible. With our FOSSILPOL workflow and R-package, we provide a protocol for optimal handling of large compilations of fossil pollen datasets and workflow reproducibility. Our workflow is also relevant for the compilation and synthesis of other palaeoecological proxies and as such offers a guide for synthetic and cross-disciplinary analyses with macroecological, biogeographical and palaeoecological perspectives. However, we emphasize that expertise and informed decisions based on palaeoecological knowledge remain crucial for high-quality data syntheses and should be strongly embedded in studies that rely on the increasing amount of open-access palaeoecological data.publishedVersio

    Saliva urea nitrogen dipsticks to predict acute kidney injury in Malawian trauma patients

    Background: Many low-resource settings have limited access to serum creatinine tests necessary for kidney disease identification. Among Malawian patients who are hospitalized after trauma, we evaluated the use of point-of-care saliva urea nitrogen (SUN) dipsticks to predict acute kidney injury (AKI). Methods: In a nested prospective cohort study, we enrolled hospitalized acute trauma patients aged ≄6 months to evaluate AKI (defined by KDIGO criteria) and the test characteristics of SUN to predict AKI. Results: Among 335 participants (approximately three-quarters able to expectorate and 34% aged ≀18 years), 12.5% (n = 42) developed AKI. At a SUN threshold of ≄40 mg/dL, a positive dipstick test was specific (99.3%) but insensitive (14.3%) in predicting AKI, with a positive predictive value of 75% and negative predictive value of 89%. At this threshold, 2.4% of participants were dipstick-positive (SUN+), and 75% of those had AKI. Reducing the SUN threshold to ≄30 mg/dL increased participants who were SUN+ to 5.0% (n = 16) but also increased the false positive rate and missed 79% (n = 33) of AKI cases. Stratified results showed better performance among adults than children and similar results when comparing participants who could and could not expectorate. There was moderate correlation between categorized BUN values and SUN (r = 0.53) but less agreement (weighted kappa 0.27; 95% CI 0.17–0.37). Conclusions: SUN dipstick testing has good specificity and negative predictive value for ruling out AKI, but poor sensitivity.     Exploring spatio-temporal patterns of palynological changes in Asia during the Holocene

    Historical legacies influence present-day ecosystem composition and dynamics. It is therefore important to understand the long-term dynamics of ecosystems and their properties. Analysis of ecosystem properties during the Holocene using fossil pollen assemblages provides valuable insights into past ecosystem dynamics by summarising so-called pollen-assemblage properties (PAPs). Using 205 fossil pollen data-sets (records), we quantify eight PAPs [pollen-taxonomic richness, diversity, evenness, pollen-compositional turnover, pollen-compositional change, and rate of pollen-compositional change (RoC)] for the Asian continent at different spatial scales (in individual records, within and across climate-zones, and within the continent) and time (temporal patterns over the past 12,000 years). Regression tree (RT) partitioning of the PAP-estimates using sample-age as a sole predictor revealed the “change-point(s)” (time or sample-age of major change in a PAP). We estimated the density of RT and multivariate regression tree (MRT) change-points in 1,000-year time bins during the Holocene. Pollen-compositional turnover (range of sample scores along the first DCCA axis) and change (number of MRT partitions) in each record reveal gradual spatial variation across latitude and a decline with longitude eastward. Temporally, compositional turnover declines linearly throughout the Holocene at all spatial scales. Other PAPs are heterogeneous across and within spatial scales, being more detectable at coarser scales. RT and MRT change-point density is broadly consistent in climate-zones and the continent, increasing from the early- to mid-Holocene, and mostly decrease from the mid-Holocene to the present for all PAPs. The heterogenous patterns in PAPs across the scales of study most likely reflect responses to variations in regional environmental conditions, anthropogenic land-use, and their interactions over space and time. Patterns at the climate-zone and continental scales indicate a gradual but congruent decline in major PAPs such as compositional turnover, rate of compositional change, and major temporal compositional changes (MRT) during the Holocene, especially during recent millennia, suggesting that vegetation in Asia has become progressively more homogenous. Data properties (e.g., spatial distribution of the records, distribution of samples within the records, and data-standardisation and analytical approaches) may also have partly influenced the results.     Testing the comet nature of main belt comets. The spectra of 133P/Elst-Pizarro and 176P/LINEAR

    We present the visible spectrum of MBCs 133P/Elst-Pizarro and 176P/LINEAR, as well as three Themis family asteroids: (62) Erato, (379), Huenna and (383) Janina, obtained in 2007 using three telescopes at "El Roque de los Muchachos"' Observatory, in La Palma, Spain, and the 8m Kueyen (UT2) VLT telescope at Cerro Paranal, Chile. The spectra of 133P and 176P resemble best those of B-type asteroid and are very similar to those of Themis family members and are significantly different from the spectrum of comet 162P/Siding-Spring and most of the observed cometary nuclei. CN gas emission is not detected in the spectrum of 133P. We determine an upper limit for the CN production rate Q(CN) = =2.8×1021= 2.8 \times 10^{21} mol/s, three orders of magnitude lower than the Q(CN) of Jupiter family comets observed at similar heliocentric distances. The spectra of 133P/Elst-Pizarro and 176P/LINEAR confirm that they are likely members of the Themis family of asteroids, fragments that probably retained volatiles, and unlikely have a cometary origin in the trans-neptunian belt or the Oort cloud.Comment: Paper sumbmited to A&A. 7 pages and 6 figure

    Excitations of optically driven atomic condensate in a cavity: theory of photodetection measurements

    Recent experiments have demonstrated an open system realization of the Dicke quantum phase transition in the motional degrees of freedom of an optically driven Bose-Einstein condensate in a cavity. Relevant collective excitations of this light-matter system are polaritonic in nature, allowing access to the quantum critical behavior of the Dicke model through light leaking out of the cavity. This opens the path to using photodetection based quantum optical techniques to study the dynamics and excitations of this elementary quantum critical system. We first discuss the photon flux observed at the cavity face and find that it displays a different scaling law near criticality than that obtained from the mean field theory for the equivalent closed system. Next, we study the second order correlation measurements of photons leaking out of the cavity. Finally, we discuss a modulation technique that directly captures the softening of polaritonic excitations. Our analysis takes into account the effect of the finite size of the system which may result in an effective symmetry breaking term.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure

    Approaches to pollen taxonomic harmonisation in Quaternary palynology

    Pollen taxonomic harmonisation involves the standardisation of the nomenclature of pollen and fern spores with similar morphotypes at the determination level that is common to all grains or spores with that morphotype within the pollen sequence(s) of interest. Such harmonisation is required prior to subsequent investigations such as numerical analysis, comparing, mapping, synthesis, and environmental reconstruction involving several pollen sequences. Here we present two approaches to harmonisation. These are a ‘top-down’ and a ‘bottom-up’ approach. The bottom-up approach is preferred. It is based on the concept of the regional pollen flora for the sequence(s) in the spatial area(s) of study. We present bottom-up harmonisation tables for the continental or sub-continental scales developed for the Humans on Planet Earth (HOPE) project. The tables are for North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia (three parts), and Indo-Pacific. These harmonisations are project-specific and sequence-specific, relating to the geographical area and to the sequences in the area under consideration, both of which are linked to the research questions being addressed. A new bottom-up harmonisation with a consistent taxonomic level and nomenclature is needed when additional sequences or areas are added. However, the HOPE tables can serve as a starting point for further research involving multi-sequence analyses or syntheses.publishedVersio

    P/2010A2 LINEAR - I: An impact in the Asteroid Main Belt

    Comet P/2010A2 LINEAR is a good candidate for membership with the Main Belt Comet family. It was observed with several telescopes (ESO NTT, La Silla; Gemini North, Mauna Kea; UH 2.2m, Mauna Kea) from 14 Jan. until 19 Feb. 2010 in order to characterize and monitor it and its very unusual dust tail, which appears almost fully detached from the nucleus; the head of the tail includes two narrow arcs forming a cross. The immediate surroundings of the nucleus were found dust-free, which allowed an estimate of the nucleus radius of 80-90m. A model of the thermal evolution indicates that such a small nucleus could not maintain any ice content for more than a few million years on its current orbit, ruling out ice sublimation dust ejection mechanism. Rotational spin-up and electrostatic dust levitations were also rejected, leaving an impact with a smaller body as the favoured hypothesis, and ruling out the cometary nature of the object. The impact is further supported by the analysis of the tail structure. Finston-Probstein dynamical dust modelling indicates the tail was produced by a single burst of dust emission. More advanced models, independently indicate that this burst populated a hollow cone with a half-opening angle alpha~40degr and with an ejection velocity v_max ~ 0.2m/s, where the small dust grains fill the observed tail, while the arcs are foreshortened sections of the burst cone. The dust grains in the tail are measured to have radii between a=1-20mm, with a differential size distribution proportional to a^(-3.44 +/- 0.08). The dust contained in the tail is estimated to at least 8x10^8kg, which would form a sphere of 40m radius. Analysing these results in the framework of crater physics, we conclude that a gravity-controlled crater would have grown up to ~100m radius, i.e. comparable to the size of the body. The definitive version was published in Geochemistry Geophysics Geosystems 5 (2004): Q02003, doi:10.1029/2003GC000626.The summit crater of Vailulu'u Seamount, the youngest volcano in the Samoan chain, hosts an active hydrothermal system with profound impact on the ocean water column inside and around its crater (2 km wide and 407 m deep at a 593 m summit depth). The turbidity of the ocean water reaches 1.4 NTU, values that are higher than in any other submarine hydrothermal system. The water is enriched in hydrothermal Mn (3.8 ppb) and 3He (1 × 10−11 cc/g) and we measured water temperature anomalies near the crater floor up to 0.2°C. The hydrothermal system shows complex interactions with the ocean currents around Vailulu'u that include tidally-modulated vertical motions of about 40–50 m, and replenishment of waters into the crater through breaches in the upper half of the crater wall. Inside and outside potential density gradients suggest that hydrothermal venting exports substantial amounts of water from the crater (1.3 ± 0.2 × 108 m3/day), which is in good agreement with fluxes obtained from a tracer release experiment inside the crater of Vailulu'u (0.8 × 108 m3/day [Hart et al., 2003]). This mass flux, in combination with the differences in the inside and outside crater temperature, yields a power output of around 760 megawatts, the equivalent of 20–100 MOR black smokers.
