Modification and development of the external tank hydrogen vent umbilical system for the space shuttle vehicle

    Get PDF
The design and development of a new T-O lock and secondary release mechanism which is being introduced to the ET Hydrogen Vent Umbilical System for the next launch of the Space Shuttle Vehicle is described. Critical analysis of the system in early 1986 indicated the need for an improvement in the secondary release system. The new T-O lock increases the clearance with the vehicle during secondary disconnect and is described

Developing Synthetic Materials for Percussion Instruments

There is a need for new, sustainable materials to make wooden percussion instruments. Many of the woods used in producing these instruments are exotic or endangered woods. Some companies have switched to fiber-reinforced (glass or carbon) plastics or polymers, but these instruments do not always have the desired sound. Without the necessary desired sound and an increasing need to replace wood, attention must be given to studying and experimenting with other materials. Research shows that the properties of different woods are critical when selecting which materials to use in which instruments. The Young’s Modulus, hardness, density, grain direction, and adaptability to moisture are the properties that determine the speed and color/tone of the sound of the instrument. Data was collected to determine what types of sounds and responses musicians favor in percussion instruments. With that in mind, analyzing the frequency response of different materials are key. Vibrational analysis of soundwaves using a vibrometer, to study the frequency difference between a reference laser and a beam testing a surface, was performed to quantify the difference in the sound of traditional wood instruments along-side synthetic material made instruments. Such information reveals the properties desired and responses that must be replicated when designing new synthetic materials for instrument making. Using the data collected, production of a sustainable prototype materials can begin

Atlantic Wolffish: A Tale of Missing Teeth. Subjects: Life Science, Biology, Marine/Ocean Science - Grades: 6-8

Evaluation of Newly Licensed RNs to Determine Success of Nursing Program: A Partnership Between Practice and Education

    Get PDF
The quality of nursing education can be improved significantly when academic institutions work closely with clinical partners. Data on how well newly licensed RNs (NLRNs) perform in a health care setting, specifically in the first year of practice, can assist schools of nursing (SONs) to identify strengths of a nursing program and areas for improvement. Historically, SONs have struggled to monitor the performance of NLRNs after they leave the educational setting. In addition, response rates to alumni and employer surveys are traditionally low for SONs because of movement among NLRNs, changes in mailing and/or e-mail address, changes in employment setting, and the time required for completing the survey.1 These challenges make it difficult to track the performance and progression of NLRNs in their first year of practice and throughout their nursing careers. The purpose of this report is to highlight how a large, metropolitan SON in the Midwest partnered with an academic health center to evaluate the performance of NLRNs during their transition to practice program and mapped their performance to the nursing program outcomes

Spaces of the Tragic: Modern Dramatic Tragedy and Contemporary Memorial Design

Humans use narrative to understand the world around us. At early ages we are exposed to storytelling with variable intent, from cautionary tales to the inspirational and everything in between. The dialectic strength of narrative mediums is well-known and well-studied. Theatre is one of the world’s oldest enduring forms of storytelling and has a strong ability to reflect and adapt with cultures as they develop, as a means of commentary and cultural reflection. Architecture shares theatre’s ancient roots and has always been an important method of communication and expression. However, its tactics have historically been less narrative-centric than theatre and the other storytelling mediums. A notable exception to this rule is the memorial typology (which historically could encompass monuments and tombs) which without fail is tied implicitly to a narrative, whether known or not. Recent shifts in memorial architecture in the last half-century have opened up new avenues of commemoration which are significantly more narrative-focused, grappling with the question of how to best address the public, and individual visitor, with increasingly tragic subject matter. Similar changes in theatre’s approach to Tragedy, since the onset of the twentieth century, prompt a comparison. This project follows this line of inquiry. Through an analysis of two well-known memorial spaces, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the National September 11 Memorial, and director/theorist Bertolt Brecht’s 1939 masterpiece Mother Courage and Her Children, a discussion is prompted surrounding the employment of narrative elements in each medium as a dialectic tool to engage tragic topics, and introduce the idea of the memorial as a spatial form of the dramatic Tragedy
