Condition-based maintenance plays an important role to ensure the working condition and to increase the availability of the machinery. The feature calculation and feature extraction are critical signal processing that allow to obtain a high-performance characterization of the available physical magnitudes related to specific working conditions of machines. Aiming to overcome this issue, this research proposes a novel condition monitoring strategy based on the spectral energy estimation and Linear Discriminant Analysis for diagnose and identify different operating conditions in an induction motor-based electromechanical system. The proposed method involves the acquisition of vibration signals from which the frequency spectrum is computed through the Fast Fourier Transform. Subsequently, such frequency spectrum is segmented to estimate a feature matrix in terms of its spectral energy. Finally, the feature matrix is subjected to a transformation into a 2-dimentional base by means of the Linear Discriminant Analysis and the final diagnosis outcome is performed by a NN-based classifier. The proposed strategy is validated under a complete experimentally dataset acquired from a laboratory electromechanical system.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Cancer is one of the diseases with most deaths worldwide, around 8.2 million annually. For this reason, several treatments and diagnostic tools have been investigated and developed over the past decades. Among them, a dual-image system has been developed to achieve and enhance the detection of cancer, which has not been done with systems currently available. The present study describes the preparation of a dual-image targeting system composed of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles functionalized with folic acid and rhodamine; nanoparticles synthesis was achieved by a coprecipitation method; the functionalization was carried out by a carbodiimide with folic acid and/or the rhodamine isothiocyanate; conjugates were characterized by spectrometric techniques; toxicity was measured by cell proliferation assay on HeLa cells using progressive concentrations of functionalized nanoparticles. Cellular uptake assay was carried out by competitive assay on HeLa cells. Iron oxide magnetite nanoparticles, modified with folic acid and rhodamine, were successfully synthetized with a particle size lower than 20nm (TEM), EDS, HRTEM, and XDR showed highly crystalline Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Folic acid and rhodamine were conjugated with high efficiency. A significant selectivity and uptake, facilitated by surface modification of iron oxide nanoparticles with folic acid, were demonstrated. The multifunctional system showed suitable physicochemical and biological properties for cell targeting through folate receptors. This study was supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (CRP-F22064, Contract no. 18358) and the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México, through Project no. 3543/2013CHT

A novel targeted drug delivery nanoparticle system based on poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) acid (PLGA) for delivery of doxorubicin (DOX) was developed. DOX-PLGA NPs were obtained by the emulsification-solvent evaporation technique. Then, their surface was modified with poly(L-γ-glutamic acid) (γ-PGA) and finally conjugated to modified folic acid (FA) as a targeting ligand. The surface modification and FA conjugation were followed by UV–Vis and FT-IR spectroscopies. Morphology was observed by TEM/SEM. Particle size, PDI and zeta potential were measured using DLS studies. Encapsulation and loading efficiencies, and DOX release kinetics were determined. Specific uptake and cell viability of DOX-PLGA/γ-PGA-FA NPs were tested in HeLa cells. Quasi-spherical nanoparticleswith a particle size lower than 600nm(DLS)were obtained. Spectroscopic techniques demonstrated the successful surface modification with γ-PGA and FA conjugation. Release profile of DOX-PLGA/γ-PGA-FA NPs showed a release of 55.4 ± 0.6% after seven days, in an acidic environment. HeLa cells exhibited a decrease in viability when treated with DOX-PLGA/γ-PGA-AF NPs, and cellular uptake was attributed to FA receptor-mediated endocytosis. These results suggest that DOX-PLGA/γ-PGA-FA NPs are a potential targeted drug carrier for further applications in cancer therapy. This study was supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (CRP-F22064, Contract No. 18358) and the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México, through the project No. 3543/2013CHT

Diversity and effective population size of four horse breeds from micro satellite DNA markers in South-Central Mexico

    Get PDF
This study assesses genetic diversity and population structure of Quarter Horse, Azteca, Thoroughbred and Creole horses, frequently used for horse dancing competitions in traditional regional festivities. Since most animals in the studied area are used as breeders, the results support the improvement of management strategies, including periodical assessment of these populations to ensure acceptable population sizes and breed integrity, and documenting genetic flow and reproductive management. The South-Central region of Mexico has experienced a sizeable introduction of purebred horses for recreational aims. A study was designed to assess effective population sizes and genetic diversity and to verify the genetic integrity of four horse breeds. Using a 12-microsatellite panel, Quarter Horse, Azteca, Thoroughbred and Creole (CRL) horses were sampled and analysed for diversity and genetic structure. Genetic diversity parameters showed high numbers of heterozygous horses but small effective population sizes in all breeds. Population structure results suggested some degree of admixture of CRL with the other reference breeds. The highly informative microsatellite panel allowed the verification of diversity in introduced horse populations and the confirmation of small effective population sizes, which suggests a risk for future breed integrity

Adjunto link http://jvetres.piwet.pulawy.pl/index.php/archive-pdf-a-abstractsAbstract Introduction: While the current tools to assess canine postoperative pain using physiological and behavioural parameters are reliable, an objective method such as the parasympathetic tone activity (PTA) index could improve postoperative care. The aim of the study was to determine the utility of the PTA index in assessing postoperative analgaesia. Material and Methods: Thirty healthy bitches of different breeds were randomly allocated into three groups for analgaesic treatment: the paracetamol group (GPARAC, n = 10) received 15 mg/kg b.w., the carprofen group (GCARP, n = 10) 4 mg/kg b.w., and the meloxicam group (GMELOX, n = 10) 0.2 mg/kg b.w. for 48 h after surgery. GPARAC was medicated orally every 8 h, while GCARP and GMELOX were medicated intravenously every 24 h. The PTA index was used to measure the analgaesia–nociception balance 1 h before surgery (baseline), and at 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 36, and 48 h after, at which times evaluation on the University of Melbourne Pain Scale (UMPS) was made. Results: The baseline PTA index was 65 ± 8 for GPARAC, 65 ± 7 for GCARP, and 62 ± 5 for GMELOX. Postoperatively, it was 65 ± 9 for GPARAC, 63 ± 8 for GCARP, and 65 ± 8 for GMELOX. No statistically significant difference existed between baseline values or between values directly after treatments (P = 0.99 and P = 0.97, respectively). The PTA index showed a sensitivity of 40%, specificity of 98.46% and a negative predictive value of 99.07%. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the PTA index measures comfort and postoperative analgaesia objectively, since it showed a clinical relationship with the UMPS

Intelligent robotics demands the integration of smart sensors that allow the controller to efficiently measure physical quantities. Industrial manipulator robots require a constant monitoring of several parameters such as motion dynamics, inclination, and vibration. This work presents a novel smart sensor to estimate motion dynamics, inclination, and vibration parameters on industrial manipulator robot links based on two primary sensors: an encoder and a triaxial accelerometer. The proposed smart sensor implements a new methodology based on an oversampling technique, averaging decimation filters, FIR filters, finite differences and linear interpolation to estimate the interest parameters, which are computed online utilizing digital hardware signal processing based on field programmable gate arrays (FPGA)

FPGA-Based Smart Sensor for Online Displacement Measurements Using a Heterodyne Interferometer

    Get PDF
The measurement of small displacements on the nanometric scale demands metrological systems of high accuracy and precision. In this context, interferometer-based displacement measurements have become the main tools used for traceable dimensional metrology. The different industrial applications in which small displacement measurements are employed requires the use of online measurements, high speed processes, open architecture control systems, as well as good adaptability to specific process conditions. The main contribution of this work is the development of a smart sensor for large displacement measurement based on phase measurement which achieves high accuracy and resolution, designed to be used with a commercial heterodyne interferometer. The system is based on a low-cost Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) allowing the integration of several functions in a single portable device. This system is optimal for high speed applications where online measurement is needed and the reconfigurability feature allows the addition of different modules for error compensation, as might be required by a specific application

A new waterborne chitosan-based polyurethane hydrogel as a vehicle to transplant bone marrow mesenchymal cells improved wound healing of ulcers in a diabetic rat model

[EN] Foot ulcers, a common complication of diabetes, can cause physical incapacity and are derived from several factors, including poor wound healing. New therapeutic strategies are needed to minimize this complication for the sake of patients' health. We therefore developed a new chitosan- polyurethane hydrogel membrane (HPUC) and the WA results confirmed that HPUC present low cytotoxicity and improved wound healing when used with mononuclear bone marrow fraction cells in the diabetic rat model. The biodegradable hydrogels were produced in block copolymer networks with a combination of chitosan blocks and biodegradable polyurethane. The membranes were characterized by FTIR, C-13-NMR and thermogravimetry. Swelling and hydrolytic degradation were also evaluated. The non-solubility of the membranes in good solvents and the chemical characterization confirmed that the network structure was formed between the PU and the chitosan through urea/urethane bonds. The findings confirm that the HPUC have interesting properties that make them suitable for wound healing applications. This work was funded by: Coordenacao de Aperfeicoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior -doctoral fellowships to Viezzer, C (CAPES/PDSE-BEX: 1408/11-9) and the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) through the MAT2016-76039-C4-1-R Project, including FEDER financial support.
