    Get PDF

In the genus Tectaria, about 200 species are cited which are distributed in southwest Asia and the Pacific islands; for the Neotropics there are 25-30 species, especially in South America. The systematics of the genus Tectaria has been built mainly under a morphological approach. However, the high phenotypic plasticity of taxa makes it difficult to recognize diagnostic characters, which generates errors when identification work is carried out. Mickel and Smith cited eight species for Mexico: Tectaria fimbriata (Willd.) Proctor and Lourteig, T. heracleifolia (Willd.) Underw., T. incisa Cav., T. mexicana (Fée) C. V. Morton., T. panamensis (Hook .) R. M. Tryon and A. F. Tryon, T. transiens (C. V. Morton) AR Sm., T. vivipara Jeremy and TG Walker and T. trichodes (C. V. Morton) A. R. Sm., within which a complex of species called "Complex of Tectaria incisa" is reported. In the present work, the phylogeny of the genus Tectaria with morphological, anatomical and palynological characters was explored. 15 taxa and 70 characters (21 morphological, 35 anatomical and 14 palynological) were analyzed under the criteria of maximum parsimony. 7 matrices were generated: morphological, anatomical, palynological, morphological + anatomical, morphological + palynological, anatomical + palynological, and morphological + palynological + anatomical, which were analyzed in the TNT program. Based on the traditional taxonomy analyzes, 10 taxa were delimited for the genus Tectaria: Tectaria sp 1, Tectaria sp 2, Tectaria sp 3, T. panamensis, T. transiens, T. heracleifolia, T. mexicana, T. fimbriata, T. vivipara, T. incisa. Background The purpose of the study is to assess the antiadherent and antibacterial properties of surface-modified different orthodontic brackets with silver nanoparticles against Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus, using radiomarker. Methods In this study evaluated quantitatively the adherence of Streptococci to orthodontic brackets, 300 samples of orthodontic brackets were selected and classified in to 10 groups as follow: GIn (InVu-Roth), GIIn (System-AlexanderLTS), GIIIn (Gemini-Roth), GIVn (NuEdge-Roth), GVn (Radiance plus-Roth), GVI (InVu-Roth), GVII (System-AlexanderLTS), GVIII (Gemini-Roth), GIX (NuEdge-Roth), GX (Radiance plus-Roth). All the samples were sonicated and Streptococci were cultivated by gender. A radioactive marker (3H) was used to codify the bacteria and measure them. After that, the brackets were submerged in a radiolabelled solution, and the radiation was measured. The statistical analysis was calculated with ANOVA test (Sheffè post hoc). Results The results showed significant differences were found among the groups. GIIIn shown the lowest scores for both bacteria; in contrast, GIX for Streptococcus mutans and GVI for Streptococcus sobrinus were the highest values. Conclusions Surface modification of orthodontic brackets with silver nanoparticles can be used to prevent the accumulation of dental plaque and the development of dental caries during orthodontic treatment

Abstract: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are used for their powerful antibacterial e ect and their ability to adhere to surfaces due to their size; they are used in di erent areas of life, mainly in the area of health as medicine. More recently, in dentistry, the synthesis and characterization of AgNPs attracted significant attention due to their antibacterial properties. In this study, the AgNPs were synthesized using the most e ective method on di erent orthodontic brackets (metallic and esthetic) and characterized by scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Their antimicrobial e ect was tested against the widely used standard human pathogens Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-negative) and Escherichia coli (Gram-positive). Our results showed that, via a simple chemical method, AgNPs can be synthesized on the surface of orthodontic brackets with good antimicrobial activity and the possibility of reducing dental decay, periodontal disease and white spots generated during orthodontic treatment

OBJECTIVE: To describe the role of local anaesthetic blocks as a potential cause of paracentral acute middle maculopathy (PAMM) after uneventful ocular surgery. METHODS: Retrospective, observational, international, multicentre case series. Nine cases of PAMM with associated visual loss following uneventful ocular surgery with local anaesthetic blocks were observed in a 9-year period (2011-2020). Demographic, ocular and systemic data, anaesthetic data and surgical details were collected. Visual acuity (VA), fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) images were reviewed. RESULTS: All nine cases were associated with decreased VA at 24 h postoperative check (ranging from hand movement to 20/200). A hyperreflective band within the middle retinal layers was observed in the structural OCT in the acute phase, evolving to thinning and atrophy of the inner retinal layers in sequential follow-up scans performed. Fluorescein angiography showed delayed perfusion in early arterial phase with normal perfusion in late venous phases. OCTA showed decreased perfusion in the deep capillary plexus. Visual recovery was variable between cases during follow-up (ranging from count fingers to 20/20). CONCLUSIONS: A combination of a vasoconstrictive effect of the anaesthetic agent, an intraocular pressure spike and a mechanical effect of the volume of anaesthetic injected may result in decreased retinal artery perfusion and be evidenced as PAMM in OCT scans. PAMM may present as a potential complication of local anaesthetic blocks in cases of unexpected visual loss after uneventful ocular surgery

Condition monitoring strategy based on spectral energy estimation and linear discriminant analysis applied to electric machines

Condition-based maintenance plays an important role to ensure the working condition and to increase the availability of the machinery. The feature calculation and feature extraction are critical signal processing that allow to obtain a high-performance characterization of the available physical magnitudes related to specific working conditions of machines. Aiming to overcome this issue, this research proposes a novel condition monitoring strategy based on the spectral energy estimation and Linear Discriminant Analysis for diagnose and identify different operating conditions in an induction motor-based electromechanical system. The proposed method involves the acquisition of vibration signals from which the frequency spectrum is computed through the Fast Fourier Transform. Subsequently, such frequency spectrum is segmented to estimate a feature matrix in terms of its spectral energy. Finally, the feature matrix is subjected to a transformation into a 2-dimentional base by means of the Linear Discriminant Analysis and the final diagnosis outcome is performed by a NN-based classifier. The proposed strategy is validated under a complete experimentally dataset acquired from a laboratory electromechanical system.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

The intervening domain from MeCP2 enhances the DNA affinity of the methyl binding domain and provides an independent DNA interaction site

    Get PDF
Methyl-CpG binding protein 2 (MeCP2) preferentially interacts with methylated DNA and it is involved in epigenetic regulation and chromatin remodelling. Mutations in MeCP2 are linked to Rett syndrome, the leading cause of intellectual retardation in girls and causing mental, motor and growth impairment. Unstructured regions in MeCP2 provide the plasticity for establishing interactions with multiple binding partners. We present a biophysical characterization of the methyl binding domain (MBD) from MeCP2 reporting the contribution of flanking domains to its structural stability and dsDNA interaction. The flanking disordered intervening domain (ID) increased the structural stability of MBD, modified its dsDNA binding profile from an entropically-driven moderate-affinity binding to an overwhelmingly enthalpically-driven high-affinity binding. Additionally, ID provided an additional site for simultaneously and autonomously binding an independent dsDNA molecule, which is a key feature linked to the chromatin remodelling and looping activity of MeCP2, as well as its ability to interact with nucleosomes replacing histone H1. The dsDNA interaction is characterized by an unusually large heat capacity linked to a cluster of water molecules trapped within the binding interface. The dynamics of disordered regions together with extrinsic factors are key determinants of MeCP2 global structural properties and functional capabilities
