Indexación: Web of Science; ScieloThe photochemical behavior of nimodipine (NIMO) and felodipine (FELO), photolabile drugs widely used as antihypertensive calcium channel blockers, is studied in constrained media. Specifically, we are interested in the kinetic analysis of 4-aryl-1,4-dihydropyridine photodegradation processes when they are incorporated in biological-mimicking systems like micelles or liposomes. In order to establish if the nature of the head of surfactant (ionic or nonionic) could be important modulating the photo-reactivity of these drugs, we studied the photodegradation of NIMO and FELO incorporated in micelles formed with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS, anionic), dodecyl-pyridinium chloride (DPC, cationic) and mono lauryl sucrose ester (MLS, nonionic) as surfactants. Additionally, the results of the photodegradation of these compounds in liposomes were also included. The results clearly indicate that both dihydropyridines studied, NIMO and FELO, are located near to the interface, but the surface charge of micelles does not affect neither, the photodegradation rate constant nor the photodegradation products profile. The absence of singlet oxygen generation in micellar media is consistent with the proposition of these 4-aryl-1,4-dihidropyridines located near to the interface of the micelle, where a polar environment is sensed. In addition, the ethanol preferential location on membranes and dihydropyridine enhanced photodegradation by alcohol presence are interesting results to consider in future research.http://www.scielo.cl/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0717-97072012000300025&nrm=is

Computational Intelligence Techniques for Predicting Earthquakes

    Get PDF
Nowadays, much effort is being devoted to develop techniques that forecast natural disasters in order to take precautionary measures. In this paper, the extraction of quantitative association rules and regression techniques are used to discover patterns which model the behavior of seismic temporal data to help in earthquakes prediction. Thus, a simple method based on the k–smallest and k–greatest values is introduced for mining rules that attempt at explaining the conditions under which an earthquake may happen. On the other hand patterns are discovered by using a tree-based piecewise linear model. Results from seismic temporal data provided by the Spanish’s Geographical Institute are presented and discussed, showing a remarkable performance and the significance of the obtained results.Ministerio de Ciencia y tecnología TIN2007-68084-C-02Junta de Andalucía P07-TIC-0261

Review of SGLT2i for the Treatment of Renal Complications: Experience in Patients with and Without T2D

    Get PDF
The management of type 2 diabetes (T2D) involves decreasing plasma glucose levels and reducing cardiovascular and microvascular complications. Diabetic kidney disease (DKD), defined as presence of albuminuria, impaired glomerular filtration, or both, is an insidious microvascular complication of diabetes that generates a substantial personal and clinical burden. The progressive reduction in renal function and increased albuminuria results in an increase of cardiovascular events. Thus, patients with DKD require exhaustive control of the associated cardiovascular risk factors. People with diabetes and renal impairment have fewer options of antidiabetic drugs because of contraindications, adverse effects, or altered pharmacokinetics. Sodium-glucose cotransporter type 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) reduce blood glucose concentrations by blocking the uptake of sodium and glucose in the proximal tubule and promoting glycosuria, and these agents now have an important role in the management of T2D. The results of several cardiovascular outcomes trials suggested that SGLT2i are associated with improvements in renal endpoints in addition to their reduction in cardiovascular events and mortality, which represents a major advance in the care of this population. The dedicated kidney outcomes trials have confirmed the renoprotective action of SGLT2i across different glomerular filtration and albuminuria values, even in patients with non-diabetic chronic kidney disease. Notably, this improvement in kidney function may indirectly benefit cardiac function through multifaceted interorgan cross talk, which can break the cardiorenal vicious circle linked to T2D. In this article, we briefly review the different mechanisms of action that may explain the renal beneficial effects of SGLT2i and disclose the results of the key renal outcome trials and the subsequent update of related clinical guidelines

Plant extracts are an important part in agroecology, as they benefit environment in combating pathogenic organisms, without resorting to synthetic chemicals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of mixtures of ethanol extracts from semi-desert plants [creosote bush (Larrea tridentata), tarbush (Flourensia cernua) and paddle cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica)] against Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi and Staphylococcus aureus. The maximum antimicrobial activity was achieved with the creosote  bush–tarbush-paddle cactus mix (1:1:1) v/v, followed by paddle cactus-tarbush (1:1) v/v. E. coli was the bacterial strain that showed the highest growth inhibition as consequence of the concentration of plant extracts (4000 and 5000 ppm of tarbush). While with the creosote bush plant extracts, the highest inhibition halos were observed. Synergistic effects were observed when mixtures of ethanolic plant extract against food-borne pathogen bacteria were used, so this may be a better way to design alternative pathogen control methodologies for food-borne pathogen bacteria. Keywords: Larrea tridentate, Flourensia cernua, Opuntia ficus-indica, ethanolic plant extract mixtures, foodborne pathogenAfrican Journal of Biotechnology, Vol. 13(5), pp. 699-704, 29 January, 201

In this context, polyphenols are interesting coformers for designing pharmaceutical cocrystals due to their wide safety profile and interesting antioxidant properties. The novel 6-propyl-2-thiouracil multicomponent solids have been obtained by mechanochemical synthesis and fully characterized by powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The analysis of supramolecular synthons has been further performed with computational methods, with both results revealing a robust supramolecular organization influenced by the different positions of the hydroxyl groups within the polyphenolic coformers. All novel 6-propyl-2-thiouracil cocrystals show an enhanced solubility profile, but unfortunately, their thermodynamic stability in aqueous media is limited to 24 h.FEDER-Universidad de Granada, Spain B-FQM-478-UGR20Spanish Government PID2020-115637GB-I0
