HoloTrap: Interactive hologram design for multiple dynamic optical trapping

    Get PDF
This work presents an application that generates real-time holograms to be displayed on a holographic optical tweezers setup; a technique that allows the manipulation of particles in the range from micrometres to nanometres. The software is written in Java, and uses random binary masks to generate the holograms. It allows customization of several parameters that are dependent on the experimental setup, such as the specific characteristics of the device displaying the hologram, or the presence of aberrations. We evaluate the software's performance and conclude that real-time interaction is achieved. We give our experimental results from manipulating 5 micron-diametre microspheres using the program.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure

Hidden clear cell acanthoma with uncommon dermoscopic findings

    Get PDF
Dear Editor, A 73-year-old woman presented with less than a 1-year history of an erythematous, well-delimited and shiny lesion on her left buttock, near the gluteal fold. Dermoscopic examination showed dotted vessels arranged in a linear pattern involving the entire lesion. These vascular findings are also called metaphorically a ‘string of pearls’ pattern. Another vascular pattern observed on the periphery of the lesion is that of branched vessels with rounded endings. Surprisingly, dermoscopy also revealed multiple rosettes (also known as ‘four-clod dots’). Differential diagnoses included mainly clear cell acanthoma, irritated seborrheic keratosis, Bowen´s disease and eccrine poroma. The lesion was completely surgically removed and histopathologic examination revealed an epidermic lesion with marked psoriasiform hyperplasia, in which epidermal cells show clear cytoplasms (Fig. 3). These findings are consistent with the diagnosis of Clear Cell Acanthoma (CCA)..

HD 77407 and GJ 577: two new young stellar binaries detected with the Calar Alto Adaptive Optics system ALFA

    Get PDF
We present the first results from our search for close stellar and sub-stellar companions to young nearby stars on the northern sky. Our infrared imaging observations are obtained with the 3.5 m Calar Alto telescope and the AO system ALFA. With two epoch observations which were separated by about one year, we found two co-moving companion candidates, one close to HD 77407 and one close to GJ 577. For the companion candidate near GJ 577, we obtained an optical spectrum showing spectral type M4.5; this candidate is a bound low-mass stellar companion confirmed by both proper motion and spectroscopy. We estimate the masses for HD 77407 B and GJ 577 B to be ~0.3 to 0.5 Msun and ~0.16 to 0.2 Msun, respectively. Compared to Siess al.(2000) models, each of the two pairs appears co-eval with HD 77407 A,B being 10 to 40 Myrs old and GJ 577 A,B being older than 100 Myrs. We also took multi-epoch high-resolution spectra of HD 77407 to search for sub-stellar companions, but did not find any with 3 Mjup as upper mass (msin(i)) limit (for up to 4 year orbits); however, we detected a long-term radial velocity trend in HD 77407 A, consistent with a ~ 0.3 Msun companion at ~ 50 AU separation, i.e. the one detected by the imaging. Hence, HD 77407 B is confirmed to be a bound companion to HD 77407 A. We also present limits for undetected, but detectable companions using a deep image of HD 77407 A and B, also observed with the Keck NIRC2 AO system; any brown dwarfs were detectable outside of 0.5 arcsec (17 AU at HD 77407), giant planets with masses from ~ 6.5 to 12 Mjup were detectable at > 1.5 arcsec.Comment: in pres

Design strategies for optimizing holographic optical tweezers setups

    Get PDF
We provide a detailed account of the construction of a system of holographic optical tweezers. While much information is available on the design, alignment and calibration of other optical trapping configurations, those based on holography are relatively poorly described. Inclusion of a spatial light modulator in the setup gives rise to particular design trade-offs and constraints, and the system benefits from specific optimization strategies, which we discuss.Comment: 16 pages, 15 figure

Structure, Dynamics and Ionic Conductivities of Ternary Ionic Liquid/Lithium Salt/DMSO Mixtures

[Abstract] In this paper we report classical Molecular Dynamics and ab initio Density Functional Theory simulations of the structure and single particle dynamics of ternary mixtures of a protic (ethylammonium nitrate, EAN) and an aprotic (1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, EMIMBF4) ionic liquid, lithium salts with common anion and a molecular cosolvent, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The coordination numbers and electrical conductivities of the different mixtures have been calculated throughout the whole concentration range, and the differences between mixtures with the protic and aprotic ionic liquids were analyzed. In both cases, the evolution of the electrical conductivity is seen to correlate well with the formation of mixed tetrahedral solvation complexes of lithium cations with ionic liquid anions and cosolvent molecules. The differences in the solvation and charge transport mechanisms in hydrogen bonded mixtures and those based in the aprotic ionic liquid are analyzed. Our conclusions indicate that the major feature behind the electrical conductivity of the ternary mixtures is the composition of the solvation shell of the metal cations in the mixtures and the rate at which anions in it are replaced by DMSO molecules. The financial support of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (Projects MAT2017-89239-C2-1-P, MAT2017-89239-C2-2-P) is gratefully acknowledged. Dimensionamiento en rotura a flexión de secciones de hormigón armado. Un planteamiento compacto

    Get PDF
This paper is an overview of the traditional method of strength design of reinforced concrete sections. The procedure, presented in the current textbooks, dates from the 50's of XX century and it can be simplified. In this work the approach is reformulated and presented in a more compact way, which implies a change both from the educational point of view and from the professional point of view of reinforced concrete. Theorem of Optimal Reinforcement of RC Sections confirms that the ingenious solutions proposed by Whitney and Wuczkowsky correspond to the minimum of a general problem that can be developed more rationally. Presenting the problem in compact form, using diagrams RSD allowed to choose alternative solutions of reinforcement with reduced environmental impact.
