    Improving shadows detection for solar radiation numerical models

    [EN]Solar radiation numerical models need the implementation of an accurate method for determining cast shadows on the terrain or on solar collectors. The aim of this work is the development of a new methodology to detect the shadows on a particular terrain. The paper addresses the detection of self and cast shadows produced by the orography as well as those caused by clouds. The paper presents important enhancements on the methodology proposed by the authors in previous works, to detect the shadows caused by the orography. The domain is the terrain surface discretised using an adaptive mesh of triangles. A triangle of terrain will be under cast shadows when, looking at the mesh from the Sun, you can find another triangle that covers all or partially the first one. For each time step, all the triangles should be checked to see if there are cast or self shadows on it. The computational cost of this procedure eventually resulted unaffordable when dealing with complex topography such as that in Canary Islands thus, a new methodology was developed. This one includes a filtering system to identify which triangles are those likely to be shadowed. If there are no self shadowed triangles, the entire mesh will be illuminated and there will not be any shadows. Only triangles that have their backs towards the Sun will be able to cast shadows on other triangles. Detection of shadows generated by clouds is achieved by a shadow algorithm using satellite images. In this paper, Landsat 8 images have been used. The code was done in python programming language. Finally, the outputs of both approaches, shadows generated by the topography and generated by clouds, can be combined in one map. The whole problem has been tested in Gran Canaria and Tenerife Island (Canary Islands – Spain), and in the Tatra Mountains (Poland and Slovakia).Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad del Gobierno de Españ

    Role of Sox-9, ER81 and VE-Cadherin in Retinoic Acid-Mediated Trans-Differentiation of Breast Cancer Cells

    Many aspects of development, tumor growth and metastasis depend upon the provision of an adequate vasculature. This can be a result of regulated angiogenesis, recruitment of circulating endothelial progenitors and/or vascular trans-differentiation. The present study demonstrates that treatment of SKBR-3 breast cancer cells with retinoic acid (RA), an important regulator of embryogenesis, cancer and other diseases, stimulates the formation of networks in Matrigel. RA-treatment of SKBR-3 cells co-cultured with human umbilical vein endothelial cells resulted in the formation of mixed structures. RA induces expression of many endothelial genes including vascular endothelial (VE) cadherin. VE-cadherin was also induced by RA in a number of other breast cancer cells. We show that RA-induced VE-cadherin is responsible for the RA-induced morphological changes. RA rapidly induced the expression of Sox-9 and ER81, which in turn form a complex on the VE-cadherin promoter and are required to mediate the transcriptional regulation of VE-cadherin by RA. These data indicate that RA may promote the expression of endothelial genes resulting in endothelial-like differentiation, or provide a mechanism whereby circulating endothelial progenitor cells could be incorporated into a growing organ or tumor

    Aryl-hydrocarbon receptor-interacting protein regulates tumorigenic and metastatic properties of colorectal cancer cells driving liver metastasis

    12 p.-5 fig.-1 tab.Background: Liver metastasis is the primary cause of colorectal cancer (CRC)-associated death. Aryl-hydrocarbon receptor-interacting protein (AIP), a putative positive intermediary in aryl-hydrocarbon receptor-mediated signalling, is overexpressed in highly metastatic human KM12SM CRC cells and other highly metastatic CRC cells.Methods: Meta-analysis and immunohistochemistry were used to assess the relevance of AIP. Cellular functions and signalling mechanisms mediated by AIP were assessed by gain-of-function experiments and in vitro and in vivo experiments.Results: A significant association of high AIP expression with poor CRC patients’ survival was observed. Gain-of-function and quantitative proteomics experiments demonstrated that AIP increased tumorigenic and metastatic properties of isogenic KM12C (poorly metastatic) and KM12SM (highly metastatic to the liver) CRC cells. AIP overexpression dysregulated epithelial-to-mesenchymal (EMT) markers and induced several transcription factors and Cadherin-17 activation. The former induced the signalling activation of AKT, SRC and JNK kinases to increase adhesion, migration and invasion of CRC cells. In vivo, AIP expressing KM12 cells induced tumour growth and liver metastasis. Furthermore, KM12C (poorly metastatic) cells ectopically expressing AIP became metastatic to the liver.Conclusions: Our data reveal new roles for AIP in regulating proteins associated with cancer and metastasis to induce tumorigenic and metastatic properties in colon cancer cells driving liver metastasis.This work was supported by the financial support of the PI17CIII/00045 and PI20CIII/00019 grants from the AES-ISCIII program to RB.     Early Adverse Life Events and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Patients with Constipation and Suspected Disordered Defecation

    Background: Early adverse life events (EALs) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Disordered defecation (DD) presents with symptoms of IBS or functional constipation (FC) and is associated with psychological distress. However, the role of trauma and stress in chronic constipation is poorly defined. We aimed to examine EALS, PTSD, and psychological symptoms in patients with constipation and suspected DD. Methods: We conducted a survey study among adults with constipation who completed anorectal manometry (ARM) and balloon expulsion testing (BET). Data were collected on socio-demographics, EALs, PTSD, bowel symptoms, quality of life, and anxiety and depression. We performed comparisons between individuals with normal versus abnormal ARM or BET, subgroup analysis by detailed ARM and BET findings, and latent class analysis using individual EAL domains. Key results: Among 712 eligible patients, 69 completed the study. EALs and provisional PTSD were present in 75.4% and 27.5%, respectively; rates did not differ between those with normal versus abnormal ARM or BET. Normal testing was associated with higher rates of specific EAL domains (emotional abuse and mental illness), higher depression scores, and poorer mental component scores in both primary and subgroup comparisons (all p < 0.05). Normal testing was associated with a lower likelihood of high-EAL latent class (p = 0.01) membership. Presence of IBS or FC did not influence associations. Conclusions & inferences: Early adverse life events and PTSD are prevalent in patients with constipation and suspected DD. Those with normal ARM and BET have higher rates of prior emotional abuse and poorer mental health

    El s&iacute;ndrome de intestino corto (SIC) se define como el fallo intestinal que provoca malabsorci&oacute;n y malnutrici&oacute;n. El objetivo del tratamiento es lograr la readaptaci&oacute;n intestinal que permita al paciente vivir sin nutrici&oacute;n parenteral, en tal sentido se han desarrollado t&eacute;cnicas quir&uacute;rgicas como alternativa terap&eacute;utica. Objetivos: desarrollar un biomodelo animal de s&iacute;ndrome de intestino corto que permita el estudio de diferentes alternativas quir&uacute;rgicas. M&eacute;todos: se realiz&oacute; un estudio experimental en 10 cerdos con resecci&oacute;n del 80% del intestino delgado. Resultados: la resecci&oacute;n masiva del 80% del intestino delgado en cerdos conduce al desarrollo del sindrome de intestino corto, demostrado por la disminuci&oacute;n de la ganancia de peso, de los niveles de glucosa, colesterol y albumina en plasma, y presencia de cambios histol&oacute;gicos t&iacute;picos de adaptaci&oacute;n intestinal. Conclusiones: la excelente tasa de sobrevida observada en este modelo lo hace adecuado para el estudio de adaptaci&oacute;n intestinal, mediante diversas t&eacute;cnicas quir&uacute;rgicas en el tratamiento del s&iacute;ndrome de intestino corto.AbstractEXPERIMENTAL MODEL OF SHORT BOWEL INTESTINE SINDROMEIntroduction: Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is an intestinal failure that causes malabsorption and malnutrition and the aim of its treatment is to achieve intestinal rehabilitation allowing the patient to live without parenteral nutrition; therefore, several surgical techniques has been developed so far. Objectives: To develop an animal biomodel of short bowel syndrome that allows the study of different therapeutic surgical alternatives. Methods: This is a descriptive study done in ten pigs with 80% resection of the small intestine. Results: 80% massive resection of the small intestine in pigs leads to the development of short bowel syndrome, demonstrated in decreased weight gain, lower plasma glucose, cholesterol and albumin together with typical histological changes of intestinal adaptation. Conclusions: The excellent survival rate observed in this model seems very useful for the study of intestinal adaptation and looks suitable for the study of surgical techniques to treat this syndrome

    Ecology of the Atlantic black skipjack Euthynnus alletteratus (Osteichthyes: Scombridae) in the western Mediterranean Sea inferred by parasitological analysis

    Between 2008 and 2011, the head of 150 Euthynnus alletteratus (Osteichthyes: Scombridae) caught inshore off the southeastern Iberian coast (western Mediterranean Sea) were examined for parasites. Two monogeneans, four didymozoid trematodes and four copepods were found. Parasite abundance showed a positive relationship with the annual sea surface temperature, except for Pseudocycnus appendiculatus, but negative with the sea depth (Capsala manteri, Neonematobothrium cf. kawakawa and Caligus bonito). Prevalences and mean abundances differed significantly among sampling areas, except for C. manteri, Oesophagocystis sp. 2 and Ceratocolax euthynni, and sampling years (Melanocystis cf. kawakawa, N.cf. kawakawa, P. appendiculatus and Unicolax collateralis). Results indicate that the parasite abundances of E. alletteratus in the western Mediterranean Sea depend mainly on regional environmental variables, which can show interannual variations. The presence of pelagic parasites, i.e. didymozoids and P. appendiculatus, could indicate that E. alletteratus migrates between inshore and offshore pelagic domains. The different parasite faunas reported in E. alletteratus populations from the western Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea appear to point out the geographical host isolation. These results suggest that E. alletteratus inhabiting the western Mediterranean Sea performs inshore-offshore small-scale migrations, and not transoceanic migrations between the western Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean SeaVersión del edito
