This paper analyzes an anonymous manuscript on the Vila Rica Revolt in 1720, in the captaincy of São Paulo and Minas do Ouro, in the State of Brazil. By understanding the text inside and out, one comes into contact with political ideas from the 16th century Europe about reasons of state and the power of the prince, and their appropriations in the 18th century manuscript that reports the uprising. The former captaincy governor was concerned with his reputation when he returned to the kingdom of Portugal in 1722, in view of the violent punishment he applied in Minas. The analysis combines aspects of writing, materiality, comparative studies and the trajectory of this handwritten news through various collections. It is mainly about realizing the historical significance of its likely circulation in the early 1720s, through well-founded hypotheses.

Oratory of the kings and their conquests: pictures and leaflets collected by Diogo Barbosa Machado

This paper analyzes the so-called collections of pictures and leaflets organized by the Portuguese bibliophile Diogo Barbosa Machado (1682-1772), today preserved at the National Library of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro. The analysis considers Barbosa Machado’s experiences both as an Oratorian cleric and as a member of the Royal Academy of Portuguese History in the mid-eighteenth century. Going beyond a mere social contextualization, the study considers the cultural and social history of the collections and the perceptions to which they were subjected, in form and in content, within and outside the main milieus that Barbosa Machado belonged to. This allows us to gain a better understanding of their peculiarities and common features, as well as the expectations the collector placed on his history of the Portuguese Monarchy

The acclamation of Amador Bueno da Ribeira in 1641 has been neglected in most recent studies, perhaps due to the fact that its history has been built upon insufficient documents. However, this episode may be recovered as representative of a particular regional situation of the "Paulista" plateau in relation to a wider set of factors. In this way, it is possible to conceive the event in question as historically probable, since the acclamation of Amador Bueno presents an intriguing coherence with a certain historical moment lived by the "Bragantina" dinasty at the time of its ascension to the throne of Portugal. The situation - characterized, in general terms, by a political frailty - would reflect on the bonds of the new Lusitana royalty with its vassals in the kingdom as well as in the overseas America

    Get PDF

Pervasive gaps in Amazonian ecological research

Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4 While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by 2050. This means that unless we take immediate action, we will not be able to establish their current status, much less monitor how it is changing and what is being lostinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
